Our stress signature is the characteristic way that stress shows up in us individually.
It shows up in our bodies,
Our minds and is expressed through our behaviours.
By being aware of your own stress signature,
You then create space to have more choice,
Agency and agility in responding to feeling stressed and what you want to do about it.
Stress isn't necessarily a bad thing.
We need stresses to motivate us,
To get going every day,
To make sure there's food on the table and a roof over our heads,
And to navigate our way through life.
But stress can take on different natures,
Depending on the particular experience or how much of it is coming at us in life at any given time.
Some things by nature are distressing,
And some things we experience as eustress,
A positive form of stress.
Which can be incredibly fulfilling but still challenging.
Examples of this include getting married,
Performing as a musician or athlete,
Only,
Of course,
If that is something you enjoy and have the skills for,
Otherwise it definitely falls into the category of distress.
And sometimes we have an influx of lots of little stresses going on through busyness of life,
But there's also things that come along that are just big stresses.
Again,
They may be distressing or they might be eustress.
But the energy and the challenge they bring,
As a stressor is still,
Has a weight to it.
And takes up our capacity.
As stresses flow in,
The stress we experience builds up.
And as it builds up,
Our stress signature starts to emerge.
If we don't release stress on a daily basis,
The stress will keep on building and the stress signature may morph into something more significant in terms of challenges with our mental health and well-being.
Our systems can only hold so much of it before real problems start to develop.
And even when we are talking levels where our stress signature has only just started to show itself.
We are already shifting away from agency,
An anchored sense of self,
And showing up in the world in the way we want to,
As we experience this increase of stress.
Now,
As you are here on this wonderful app,
Abundant with stress-releasing resources,
I'm guessing you know a little about ways to de-stress and are already doing and learning more and more about that for yourself.
But you are here with me specifically because you want to understand your stress signature more.
So what is your stress signature?
In case it helps to give mine as an example.
I tend to hold stress in my jaw,
Which then spreads down my neck and into my shoulders.
I know things are getting really bad when it travels up into my head and I start to get headaches.
The tension in my jaw relates to an old pattern of keeping it to myself,
Keeping things together,
And carrying on.
Eventually it leaks out of my eyes and I become tearful.
In terms of my mind,
My thoughts tend to become more self-critical,
Which is really common.
And for me,
Those critical thoughts tend to focus on the past and things I could have done differently.
And in my behavioural response,
I get a bit micromanagy,
Trying to control little things and getting snappy and critical with my loved ones.
Not pretty,
But true.
So how about you?
Where do you hold stress in your body?
And what is that about?
What does it tell you about your relationship with stress?
How did your brain respond to a build-up of stress?
What nature do your thoughts take when you're stressed?
And how do you express all of this?
Through your behaviors.
I invite you to get curious about this.
And if it's something you're not really aware of in yourself.
Get really curious,
Reflect on it,
Take these questions forward with you over the next few days.
And if you really don't know what your stress signature is,
Ask someone who loves you.
They will know.
As I share in my talk Awareness Choice Power,
The more awareness we have,
The more able we are to choose how we want to respond,
And the more empowered we become.
We are more equipped to recover and to nurture and maintain our well-being.
And we are more freed up to live in alignment with ourselves.
