Farzana Doctor

Farzana Doctor is a Tkaronto-based author, activist, and Registered Social Worker. She has written five critically acclaimed novels, a poetry collection, and a self-care workbook for activists and helpers, 52 Weeks To A Sweeter Life for Caregivers, Activists, and Helping Professionals. Farzana completed her MSW in 1993. She works from anti-oppression, decolonial, client-centred, and psychodynamic perspectives. She enjoys parts work (IFS), somatic-oriented, hypnosis, mindfulness, and memory reconsolidation. She is especially interested in the ways in which the unconscious and the body are helpful in making change and also pays close attention to the intersections among emotional, spiritual, and political aspects of life. Before going into private practice, she worked in community-based and hospital settings providing street outreach, crisis services, individual and group counseling, and program management. She currently works with individuals and couples and provides clinical consultation to other therapists and organizations. She is a founding member of WeSpeakOut and the End FGM Canada Network.

I woke too early this morning. Not from a night sweat but I thought this might help. I appreciated the reminder that I was not alone and that resting even though it isn’t sleeping can be helpful. Thank you for offering this.

Really interesting, it never occurred to me that my near burnouts could be related to being a second generation immigrant. I didn’t feel like I was going full tilt but I didn’t allow myself the space to stop and just be. Thank you for these insights and your personal experiences, really helpful 🙏🏻
