Throughout time the practice of a daily inventory of both good and bad has been recommended. As Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." This meditation is loosely based on the Tenth Step of the Twelve Steps. It is always good to look at the positive and negative aspects of our character for that can bring rewards as we can then let go of reactive behaviors and continue our lives in a more fulfilling way. So breathe and let go as we make some room for gratitude.

Come to a comfortable seat,

Breathing in refreshing air,

Breathing out our negativity,

Breathing in possibility,

Breathing out our holding on.

As we let go,

We see our day in front of us and allow ourselves to turn over any of our negative thoughts of people that we may interact with.

Instead,

We turn our thoughts to gratitude,

To what we're grateful for.

It could be just the sleep we got in our own bed,

Having a roof over our heads,

Having a meal to eat,

Being able to breathe comfortably in and out.

As we think of these symbols of beautiful,

Basic things in our lives that are so necessary to our welfare,

We give thanks that we are here for another day.

It may even be the end of our day where we can think of all the things that we did do.

Were we a little selfish?

Were we anxious?

Were we prideful?

Were we fearful?

How do we act out on these things?

Did we make a quick amends to someone when possible?

Taking ourselves and seeing two columns in our mind,

A plus and another one a minus,

And above it see something simple like,

Yet powerful like killing.

Well,

We didn't kill anyone.

We didn't think about killing anyone,

But did we kind of steal from someone that day,

Their energy?

That's the form of killing.

Were we snide to someone?

Were we impatient?

Did we cut someone off in traffic?

Did we think we were slightly better?

Did we gossip?

Do subtle character assassination?

Thinking of these things,

We can think about what we would do to rectify these things.

What positive action could we do?

It could be as simple as making a firm resolve that when the situation comes up again,

You are not going to open your mouth.

You are not going to take that action.

We're not saying this is forever.

It's just slowly a way that we have an awareness about what we do so we can make a change towards a positive manner of being.

A way that we can grow to be a person that we want to be,

Someone who has integrity.

Thinking of these things and making a resolve to take these actions,

We can turn them over.

And come back to our seat comfortably.

Thank you.
