Namaste and welcome.
My name is Palak and in today's short practice,
We will explore Anulom Vilom,
Also known as alternate nostril breathing,
A traditional yogic pranayam that helps balance the nervous system and bring the mind into a state of calm and clarity.
Firstly,
Find a comfortable seated position.
Allow your spine to gently lengthen,
Shoulders to relax and face to soften.
Now,
Bring your index finger and the thumb of the left hand to touch each other and rest your left hand in this Gyan Mudra on your left knee.
With your right hand,
Gently fold your index and middle finger towards the palm,
Leaving the thumb,
The ring finger and the pinky finger available to close the nostrils.
This is Vishnu Mudra.
Now take a natural breath in and slowly breathe out.
Before we start,
You can relax both your hands in Vishnu Mudra and Gyan Mudra on your knees and let the breath become smooth and relaxed.
Notice the natural rhythm of your breath without trying to change anything yet.
Allow the jaw to soften,
The shoulders to drop and the mind to settle.
Now inhale gently through both the nostrils.
Block your right nostril with the thumb and exhale slowly through the left nostril.
Inhale now from the left nostril.
Block your left nostril with the ring and the pinky finger and exhale through the right.
Inhale right.
Block your right.
Exhale through the left nostril.
Inhale left.
Block your left nostril.
Exhale from the right.
Inhale through the right nostril.
Close the right nostril again.
Exhale through the left.
Inhale left.
Block your left.
Exhale right.
Inhale right.
Block right.
Exhale left.
Move slowly and comfortably with your breath.
There is no strain,
No force.
Just a gentle steady rhythm.
Continue for a few more rounds at your own pace and count.
Now gently release the hand from your nose.
Allow both the nostrils to remain open.
Take a slow breath in through the nose and a soft breath out.
Notice any subtle differences that you feel in your mind space,
In your body.
Perhaps a little more balance,
A little more calm and a little more spaciousness in the mind.
Anulom Vilom is a beautiful practice for bringing harmony to the breath and the nervous system.
You may return to it anytime you need a moment of steadiness during your day.
Take one final slow breath in and exhale gently.
When you're ready,
Slowly open your eyes.
Namaste.
