This is the meditation I lead for my children each night. It's based on the natural rhythms of the colonial Upper Great Lakes/Midwestern USA originally known as Teejop and the traditions of Norse cultures. I hope it helps you relax into sleep as well as it does my kids.

We call upon and welcome the spirits,

Guides and guardians of the East.

The first rays of a brand new dawn coming up over the horizon,

Bringing light to the sky,

Bringing warmth to the air,

Bringing movement,

A new possibility.

We are renewed with each dawn.

We are reminded each day brings us an opportunity to begin again.

We welcome the start of things,

The vision,

The dream,

The tiny seed pod expanding and bursting open with new life.

Fragile,

Vulnerable,

Tiny tendrils of sprouts cautiously poking their way out.

Feeling the breeze as they stretch and rise and bring green and color.

Welcome first bright crocus.

The smile we greet that purple and gold with.

So happy to see color again.

There is possibility and inspiration.

Things are coming to life.

And so are we,

We stretch,

We unfurl across our bed in the morning.

We bring movement to our body.

We are moving like spring river currents.

We are in the flow.

We honor the potential of what might be.

We call upon and welcome the spirits,

Guides and guardians of the South.

Full bright sun in the sky bringing blue and white clouds on this March midday hike in the woods.

We see the life in the trees,

Bunnies hopping.

Cardinal Robin,

Welcome birds.

The confidence of the trees stretching tall.

Even in the cool March air.

We know the South is where we look for heat,

For nourishment.

This is the season of nourishing our growth and expansion.

We soak it in.

We spin yarn.

We weave.

The season of making and doing and being fully alive.

It is a time of day.

We work in our community.

We build.

Welcome heat.

Welcome fire.

Welcome nourishment and growth.

Welcome South.

We call upon and welcome the spirits,

Guides and guardians of the West.

End of day,

Golden hour sunshine.

Stretching our tall,

Thin shadows like a bridge over the horizon,

Connecting our feet,

Our day to the night.

It is a time of crossing over.

In this the early spring,

We honor that there is still completion.

Each day ends.

And we are given an opportunity to let go.

To release.

To compost that old idea,

Let it decay and fall away.

Let it nourish new growth tomorrow.

Welcome hunkering down,

Winding down,

Slowing down.

Even the emerging bears from their winter hibernation slow down each night.

Welcome the return of the mystery in the darkness,

The shadow.

Welcome family suppers around a table with loved ones.

We choose,

We adore,

We celebrate.

We honor the good that the day has brought.

How fortunate to have a full table and a full heart.

Welcome West.

We call upon and welcome the spirits,

Guides and guardians of the North.

Dark night falling.

Our friends who've awoken or returned in the spring.

Welcome owl.

Welcome clumsy,

Fresh spring raccoon pups.

Tricksters in the night playing all their little hijinks.

Playful little raccoons.

Cute,

Mischievous,

Silly.

Welcome the stealth of the spring coyote and fox.

Searching,

Hunting in the night.

Quiet,

Cunning.

Welcome the comfort in the rabbit's den.

Sweet,

Soft fur of brand new baby bunnies for just coming in just in time.

To keep us warm through the night,

We cuddle together with our loved ones and we rest,

Deep rest.

Night,

Our time of restoration and integration,

Dreams and subconscious.

Welcome a time just for dreaming,

Just for peace.

We anchor into our beds and feel our bodies relax.

Ready for our rest.

While we lie gazing in our bed,

We can imagine the starry sky above us.

Welcoming and calling upon guardians,

Guides and spirits up above.

We give gratitude to the air we breathe.

Knowing each breath is a gift directly from the plant life around us.

We honor the powers and invisible force fields that are the weather patterns,

Temperatures rising,

Humidity shifting,

Pressure changing.

Powers we may never see,

But we most certainly feel.

We honor our intuition and we trust our sensations.

Welcome powerful lightning,

Electric energy,

Boom of thunder.

Welcome night sky beyond the clouds.

Full of stars and satellites,

Planets and galaxies ever expanding,

Moving and changing in ways we will not live to know and understand.

So we are reminded by the night sky,

We can never dream too big.

We give ourselves opportunity to dream big and wide,

Expansive and evolving dreams.

Welcome above.

With each breath,

We feel our bodies sink a little deeper into the bed beneath us.

We are honored to be held by the spirits,

Guides and guardians below.

Mother Earth holding us,

Rocking us.

She is always there for us.

And while we explore an adventure,

She always holds us close.

We anchor in below us,

Down into the earth like roots ourselves and through finger woven roots of trees and grasses.

Welcome the living layers under our feet,

Mitochondria,

Fungi,

Bacteria,

Welcome nourishing soils filled with nutrients and minerals.

Welcome burrowed beetles,

Earth worms.

We are so grateful for the earth that nourishes the food we eat and that we share with our loved ones.

We anchor down deeper through water tables,

Silt and sand down deeper,

Past buried treasures,

Hidden surprises,

Shiny gems,

Enormous boulders.

We remember we are connected to each and every grain of sand.

We are all stardust.

We anchor all the way down into the center of the earth,

Into the center of ourself.

We're reminded that enormous change can be made with just the tiniest shift in our tectonic plates.

The tiniest shift has a ripple effect that changes everything from time to time.

We anchor in to help us stay steady to the many changes that come about.

We are steady.

We are safe.

We're held.

May all of you come together this evening to guide us into a deep night's sleep.

So our body continues to grow strong,

Flexible,

Quick,

And affectionate.

So that our mind is decisive,

Discerning,

Kind,

And careful.

And our heart,

Oh our hearts,

Always,

Always generous,

Gentle,

And grateful.

So may it be.
