When you walk, there’s a world of difference between following a map and experiencing the landscape itself. The same is true of being human. There’s a gap between reading about tools and techniques and actually moving through life with confidence. In today’s 5 Minutes in Nature, Liz reflects on the profound power of knowing, at the level of the soul, that you are deeply OK — and how that awareness can help you navigate the terrain of being human with ease and grace.

Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott once again up on Dartmoor and just looking over the view of the South Hams.

The South Hams is the arable land around Dartmoor and as I stand on Dartmoor from a higher elevation I can look to the fields and the pasture lands in the countryside below and today my reflection is really based on the difference between the map and the actual landscape and when I go walking there are times I take a map with me particularly if I don't know the area so well and before I go walking I'll take a look at the map and look at the area and mark out some potential footpaths and trails that I'd like to walk along and although I might get a sense a general sense of what that landscape is going to look like from the map I can generally make out you know the steepness of the hillside I can see the different views I might potentially see although I can see that from a map I don't really understand it until I am in the landscape itself the map is useful it's really useful to plan and to get an overview but nothing nothing can beat being in the landscape itself and that's what I want to talk about with you today and I'm talking now about the landscape of being human like walking through the landscape of being human I know for many years I read lots of self-help books and different psychology courses I went on different psychology courses and trainings I loved them all and I learned a lot but a lot of what I learned was a little bit like reading the map it was reading the map of being human coming up with different techniques and tools of what I might do if I came across certain situations and the truth is that there is nothing nothing as powerful as being in the landscape itself being and experiencing what it is to be human and really feeling that the challenges the joy the gratitude the sadness all of it that is what it's like to actually walk through the landscape yesterday I told you about the two areas that are really central to my whole philosophy on life and those two areas just as a reminder is that I am deeply okay at the level of spirit and universal energy I am unbroken I am love itself and the second area which I find really useful to remember is that I have the potential to get distracted from that core truth of who I am by the power of thought and being distracted and caught out by the power of thought well that's what it is to be human we are having a human experience and the human experience is that we get lost in what it is to be human and temporarily forget who we truly are but when we can be human and remember who we truly are then we walk through the landscape the challenges of being human with so much more ease and it's really helpful to remember this as you walk through the landscape of being human you can read books and find out techniques and discover tools of things you may or may not do to improve yourself as a human being to improve your ability to tell yourself positive thoughts and mantras and give yourself boundaries I don't know what it is that you use these things for but there is nothing as powerful as realizing that you are deeply okay and you can get caught out when you forget that you're deeply okay and what that means is you then walk through the actual experience of being human with all the spectrum of emotions thoughts feelings and experiences that you're going to come across if you can just remember those things that you're okay and sometimes you forget you're okay then it doesn't matter what life throws at you you can always take the next step because when you know deeply at the level of soul that you are okay then you know that you can walk as a human being with this assurance that you are much more than you think you are and that whatever challenges life throws at you you can always always take the next step
