The word compassion comes from the Latin compati or "to suffer with". The gift of our pain and suffering is they make living in the head so horribly uncomfortable, that we open. We get humble. We ask for help. We come into the present - even if it is just to acknowledge that our worst nightmare has just come true! If we dare to open to self-compassion for our struggling humanity, we open the door to rebirth. The Hebrew word for compassion points to this new beginning in that its root also means "womb", a place of deep, creative, nurturing alchemy. In this clip, Premasudha credits the mantra of self-compassion as the key to transformation beyond her wildest dreams.

So,

You know,

The way I came to it,

In my desperation,

I focused on self-compassion like a mantra.

That's what worked for me.

I'd been a Buddhist in other lives,

The whole thing of compassion surfaced,

And I just did it.

I just did it,

This endless focus on self-compassion.

And then I started feeling it.

It dropped from my head to my heart,

And I started feeling self-compassion.

And when I started feeling self-compassion,

I began to be healed.

Because when you feel compassion for your poor,

Deluded,

Stressed out human self,

That's God,

That's your soul.

You are letting your soul into your body.

That is your embodying your soul energy.

You might feel like that your heart has expanded even a foot beyond your body.

You might feel that your head is subtly expanding and getting bigger.

That is you beginning to embody your true nature.

And it will come from a very intense focus on the divine.

And some of you get really stuck on it with an intense focus on your difficulties.

That is your practice,

Really.
