Hello and welcome to this guided practice called Overcoming Systemic Barriers and Inner Glass Ceilings.
This practice will support you in navigating systemic barriers such as those related to privilege in workplace settings while uncovering and strengthening inner and outer resources to address these challenges with confidence and compassion.
So,
I invite you to find a comfortable and quiet spot where you feel undisturbed.
Adjust the lighting,
Temperature or surroundings to feel as soothing as possible.
And if you'd like,
Bring an object that feels grounding like a stone,
A piece of fabric or a photograph.
And now,
I invite you to begin deep breathing.
Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four,
Feeling your chest and belly expand.
Hold your breath for two counts,
Noticing the pause.
And exhale gently through your mouth for six counts,
Releasing tension.
And now,
Repeat this cycle for eight to ten times.
Imagine your roots extending from your body into the ground,
Anchoring you firmly.
With every exhale,
Feel a sense of stability and presence grow stronger.
Now,
Place a hand over your heart,
Belly or another comforting spot and silently say this out loud or softly to yourself.
In this moment,
I choose to be present for myself.
I am safe.
I am grounded.
I am whole.
And now,
Gently bring to mind a recent or significant moment when you encountered systemic privilege in the workplace.
Visualize the situation as if watching it in a movie.
Try to observe without judgment.
And explore your emotions.
What did you feel in that moment?
Anger,
Sadness,
Frustration?
Notice where in your body these emotions arise.
For example,
Tightness in the chest or heaviness in the shoulders.
Name the emotion without attaching to it.
This is frustration or this is sadness.
Reflect on the context.
What patterns of systemic inequity or privilege were present?
Now,
I invite you to understand the power dynamics.
What patterns of systemic inequity or privilege were present?
How did the actions of others and the structure of the organization contribute to it?
And now,
Take a deep breath and say to yourself,
I am capable of navigating this with wisdom and strength.
I am capable of navigating this with wisdom and strength.
I can see the systems around me clearly.
And I can be a force for change.
Now,
I invite you to spend a few minutes journaling or reflecting on thoughts that are holding you back.
This could include thoughts like,
I will never be good enough to succeed here.
If I speak up,
I'll be dismissed or judged.
I don't have the power to change things.
And now,
I invite you to examine the roots of these limiting thoughts and beliefs and ask yourself,
Where did this belief originate?
Is there a past experience,
A societal message,
An authority figure,
Or something else that nurtured this limiting belief within me?
Does this belief still serve me or is it outdated?
And now,
I invite you to reframe the belief.
For each limiting thought,
Craft a new empowering belief.
The limiting belief could be,
I don't belong here.
And the empowering belief could be,
I have unique gifts and a perspective that this space needs.
Now,
Close your eyes and imagine yourself breaking through these mental barriers.
See yourself walking through an open door into a brighter,
Freer space where you are fully empowered and valued.
Choose an affirming phrase to ground this visualization.
Example could be,
I am worthy of success.
I belong in every space I choose to enter.
Now,
I invite you to find and strengthen outer resources.
Create a mental or written list of people,
Organizations,
Or tools that can support you in addressing systemic barriers.
Examples might include trusted colleagues or mentors,
Employee resource groups or advocacy networks,
Workshops,
Books,
Or podcasts on systemic change and equity.
And now,
Deepen your connection.
Think about one person or resource you'd like to engage with more.
And ask yourself,
What specific support or guidance can I seek from them?
How might I approach them with clarity and openness?
Now,
I invite you to commit to a single concrete step this week to build your network.
Email a mentor to set up a conversation.
Join a workplace group advocating for equity.
Research or register for an external training.
Affirm your strength in seeking help and repeat this silently.
It is a sign of strength to seek and build support.
I have allies and tools to help me rise above barriers.
Now,
Reflect on times you have faced and overcome challenges.
Write down or think about what skills,
Qualities,
Or values helped you succeed.
How can you apply those strengths to your current challenges?
Place both hands over your heart and say,
I acknowledge the difficulty of this moment.
May I give myself the kindness I need to keep going?
And list or visualize the personal qualities that empower you.
Resilience.
Empathy.
Creativity.
Imagine these inner resources as glowing light within you.
As you breathe in,
Feel this light grow brighter and fill you with energy,
Courage,
And clarity.
Now,
Take three deep cleansing breaths.
Each time,
Imagining tension leaving your body and strength filling its place.
Reflect on one insight or commitment from today's practice that you will carry into the next week.
Write it down if possible.
For example,
I will reach out to a mentor to discuss systemic barriers at work.
I will challenge one limiting belief and replace it with a more empowering thought.
And now,
Express gratitude for taking the time to practice.
And silently affirm,
I am enough exactly as I am.
I have the courage to navigate challenges with grace and strength.
I am strong.
I am resourceful.
I am connected.
I can create the change I wish to see.
By engaging deeply with each step,
This practice helps you in addressing both external and internal barriers while fostering the resources you need to thrive.
So,
I invite you to come back to this practice again to strengthen some of the learning.
And I wish you luck and peace in navigating these barriers in your workplace.
Have a wonderful day ahead.
