I'd like to dedicate this meditation to Pace and Karen Robinson,
Pillars of a community.
Just starting where you are.
You don't need to change anything.
You don't need to become.
There's no doing.
There's just existing for the moment.
Maybe you can feel your spine extending as you learn to sit,
Or maybe you're doing this lying down.
However you find yourself.
Just checking in.
Okay,
How do I feel?
Where am I sore or stiff?
Where are you holding back or even rushing forward?
Regretting the past,
Nervous about the future.
All normal.
Just know them.
Notice that.
Witness it.
See it with a certain amount of clarity,
Gentle resolve,
And generous awareness.
Be kind to yourself.
All of this is normal and healthy.
And not something you can control or want to control,
But just can be easier with or forgiving about.
What are the sounds around you?
Do you notice any sounds within you?
Maybe your stomach or your bones?
Maybe you can hear your heartbeat.
Notice your breathing.
Just listen.
This is not a job.
Meditation is for your fun,
For your betterment.
Don't work at it.
Enjoy it.
You're just holding on to moments and getting to be with yourself,
Which is something the world doesn't offer you very much.
To learn to enjoy your own company.
And however you are breathing,
Just go a little bit deeper and a little bit slower.
Even using the breath as a kind of stretch or a kind of slowing down,
Kind of quieting maybe.
There aren't people who are good at meditation and bad at meditation.
Maybe there are people with more practice.
But there's no one who clears their mind.
That would be deadly.
Your neurons are going,
Thoughts come up,
And the best you can do is just not hold on to them.
As Pema Chodron says,
You are the sky,
Everything else is weather.
Let the weather pass.
Enjoying the quiet.
Maybe you feel it like a tangible thing.
Enjoying the stillness.
A little bit of rest.
A few minutes to rest.
We all need that.
And this meditation is about solitude and about gathering.
Privacy and collaboration.
The personal and the social.
Let's start with the piece of the personal.
The isolated.
The alone but not necessarily lonely.
Drawing into self.
Maybe with a little smile or a kind thought about you and you alone.
Could be as broad as you are a beautiful person inside and out.
Could be as small as you know how to use this complicated toaster very well.
Just a kindness.
Treating yourself with love and respect.
Maybe give yourself a little hug.
Loving your body.
And just breathe deep into that personhood.
The blessed person you are.
Created exactly as you are to be right now.
No mistake.
Nothing to be ashamed of.
Breathe into that beautiful person.
Your oldest friend.
Your deepest home.
You need this solitude.
You need this personal space.
It is for your health and not selfish.
Take time for self.
Love and care and affection.
Breathe into that and absorb it.
Breathe out slowly.
In deeply with that love and out slowly with that kindness.
Ah,
But here's the trick.
You and the world love you just the way you are.
And you are loved too much to stay that way.
You have more to give.
Solitude is nice.
Quiet time alone is important.
And it allows us to return and share.
Let's move into that aspect.
You as part of society.
You as a giver and a collaborator.
Just breathing.
Drawing out to the world.
Connecting with all the world and the many people and animals and plants around you.
A part of,
Not just alone.
Partner in creation.
Breathe into that connectivity and breathe out to share it.
Breathe into that web of connections.
Breathe yourself down the line out.
It's good to be alone and it's good to be together.
Deep breaths as you connect with the air all around you.
All the air that's breathed by everyone else.
All the air that's ever been breathed.
Back and forth in cycles.
Giving yourself away in a safe way.
Not too much,
Not too little.
Not sacrificing.
Not because you have to,
But because you get to.
You have enough.
You can share.
Breathe and give the breath away.
Breathe in and use it for yourself and breathe out and give it away.
Into the personal,
Out for the communal.
Just keep breathing for yourself and for every other person.
Sharing strength.
Blessings.
Thank you.
