Discovering The Inner Mother
by Emma P
Our relationship to the maternal can often feel complicated and challenging. This visualization invites you to connect with the deeply loving, ever-present divine mother that resides within you, for both personal and intergenerational healing. Questions posed in the visualization include: What am I feeling? How can I care for myself? What do I need to know?
Transcript
Welcome to this visualization for connecting with the Divine Mother within.
We'll begin by finding a comfortable position.
Maybe lying down on a bed,
A couch,
The floor,
Finding a supportive seat,
Getting comfortable with pillows,
Blankets,
Or anything you might need to feel fully supported.
As you're ready I would invite you to close the eyes or just find a soft gaze.
And as you close or soften your eyes,
Letting your eyeballs soften,
Melt into their sockets.
Relaxing the muscles of the jaw,
Softening the forehead.
And I invite you to take a deep breath in through the nose and sigh out through the mouth.
Let's do that one more time.
Take a deep breath in and sigh out through the mouth.
And now begin to allow the breath to relax.
Just a gentle in and out.
No need to control it in any way.
Just noticing it as it is.
And see if as your breath goes in and out,
Inhale and exhale.
Is it possible to soften just a bit on every single exhale?
There's a way in which it can feel like our muscles and tissues are gripping at the bones.
Seeing if on your exhale you can soften even just slightly,
Making space,
Creating ease throughout the body.
And really feeling the couch or the bed,
The ground,
The chair,
Whatever is underneath you rising up to support your body.
Your spinal cord resting against whatever it is beneath.
Seeing if you can really feel that support,
Really settle into it.
Knowing that in this moment you are held.
As you begin to relax,
I invite you to imagine yourself in a little cabin near a body of water.
Could be a lake,
A river,
The ocean,
Any little cabin,
Any body of water.
Perhaps you've been here before or perhaps it's entirely imagined.
And it's nighttime and the sky is dark.
Stars are bright above you.
And you are cozy inside of your cabin.
You have everything you need there,
Maybe even a little more than you need.
And you're deeply comfortable.
This cabin is a place of real warmth and nourishment for you.
Sweet,
Peaceful.
And I invite you to imagine yourself in this cabin crawling into bed.
And the covers are so soft.
The mattress is just how you like it.
The pillows are perfect.
And you're totally comfortable and blissed out in this yummy bed.
And you close your eyes and a profound feeling of peace sweeps over you.
There is nothing to worry about.
There's a warmth,
A peace that floods your whole body.
And in this bed,
You feel held.
As you're feeling this peaceful warmth inside of you,
You begin to hear a song coming from somewhere near the water outside.
It's a beautiful song,
A lullaby.
And you listen to the song as it calls to you.
And as you listen and as you breathe,
The song touches your heart so deeply that your heart warms.
You can feel it beating.
You feel drawn to get up to get out of bed.
And as your feet land on the floor,
Even though you are walking towards the door,
You have that same peaceful feeling.
Almost like you're floating.
Your walk is effortless as you open the door and walk towards the water.
And as you approach the water's edge,
The song becomes louder.
And when you get to the edge of the water,
You sit down.
You listen in the darkness.
You feel completely safe.
Maybe you even begin to sing or hum with the song.
And as you look out over the water,
A woman appears.
It is the vision of the Great Mother.
And you see that the song is coming from her.
And maybe she looks familiar,
Or maybe you have never seen her before.
But you notice her.
Her hair,
Her clothing,
Her kind face.
And as you look at her,
She looks back at you.
And in her gaze,
You feel so deeply seen.
She sees your wishes,
Your fears,
All of the characteristics that make you you.
Even the ones that you may not like so much,
The ones that feel difficult,
She sees them all.
And you can tell by her gaze that she loves them all.
There is not a single piece of you that she does not love.
And you cannot look away from her.
It's like her gaze is filled with light that is washing in you,
Out of you,
Washing around you,
Filling you with love.
Unconditional,
Undeniable,
Deep,
Profound love.
And she looks at you and stops her song.
And she begins to speak to you with warmth.
Welcome,
My love,
She says.
I have been waiting for you.
And you feel her love radiating towards you.
And looking deep into your eyes,
She asks you,
What are you feeling,
My love?
What are you feeling?
When you breathe,
Feeling the answer emerge from deep within you.
Knowing that the answer may come in words,
Or in a felt sense,
Your belly,
Your chest,
Your throat.
You allow whatever feeling is emerging to pour forth.
And you share your feelings with her,
Perhaps with tears,
Or joyful exuberance or anger.
You notice her response.
As you speak,
She comes closer,
Putting her hand on yours with a loving gaze.
She sits down beside you at the edge of the water.
And as you sit side by side,
You ask her,
How can I care for myself?
How can I care for myself?
And you listen to her response.
You receive this response fully.
Feeling it touch a place deep within.
And finally you ask her,
What do I need to know?
What do I need to know,
Great mother?
You receive her response fully.
You receive this response with deep gratitude.
And as she finishes,
She tells you how much she loves you.
How proud she is of you.
Who you are,
Who you've been,
Who you will be.
All of you.
She loves all of you she is proud of.
And she tells you that anytime you have a question,
Or you want an ear to listen,
That there's never a bad time to call upon her.
She'll meet you anytime,
Anywhere.
All you have to do is close your eyes and call for her.
She'll be there every time you see the moon.
She'll be there every time water touches your skin.
She'll be there every time you crawl into bed after a difficult and long day.
She'll be there every time tears fall from your eyes,
Or you're red with anger or exploding with joy or heavy with shame.
She is never away.
She is always with you.
And she loves every part of you.
And with a gratitude and a humility emerging from deep within you,
You thank her.
And as you express your thanks,
She begins to fade into the night.
And you find yourself sitting by the water alone in the quiet darkness.
And you place your hands on your body,
Maybe the belly,
The heart,
Or somewhere else,
Noticing a warmth there.
And it is there you realize that she rests inside of you.
You can reach her anytime just by placing a hand there on the body.
And so with a belly full of love and a heart full of love and deep wisdom,
You stand up and walk back to your cabin,
Crawl into your bed,
Curling up.
You fall deeply asleep.
As you're ready,
You begin to grow conscious once again of your breath.
Understanding the inhale,
Exhale,
Becoming conscious once again of the sensations of your body,
Perhaps noticing sounds,
Smells,
Becoming aware once again of the space where you are.
As you're ready and only as you're ready,
Allowing the eyes to flutter open,
Returning to your space.
