Hi and welcome to this audio version of Turns Out Thoughts Really Can Become Things.
How I harness the power of my mind to heal my body.
I was looking for something to read one day in early 2024.
As I scrolled through my Kindle library,
I saw that one of the only two books I hadn't already read was Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza.
I'd originally bought it a couple of years earlier,
Started reading it and gave up pretty quickly.
You know how when you read a sentence or an entire paragraph and then you realise you've no idea what it said,
So you have to go back and read it again?
That was me and this book.
Yawn!
It was such hard work,
Which was a shame because the blurb sounded fascinating.
And what a great title!
But the other book option in my library was even less appealing,
So I decided to give it another try.
Five minutes in and I was hooked.
I hoovered up every word of that book in about three days.
And then I wanted to know more.
Note,
For anyone who hasn't read Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself,
It's about our innate ability to change ourselves and our lives by changing how we think and what we believe.
It weaves together quantum physics,
Epigenetics and neuroscience,
Along with anecdotes of people who've achieved absolutely remarkable transformations in their physical bodies and their lives.
Including people who've healed supposedly unhealable conditions.
That book started me down a deep Joe Dispenza rabbit hole.
Over the next few months,
I read all his other books.
Becoming supernatural is probably my favourite.
And I did a whole bunch of his meditations.
I listen to the online courses where he teaches about the science of change and healing.
I had those on a loop.
I'd put on my running shoes in the morning,
Plug in my headphones and off I'd go.
I must have listened to those courses five or six times in 2024.
And I became deeply familiar with all the concepts.
Fascinating stuff.
They also fed my hunger to know more about the science of healing and spirituality.
I put a strong intention out to the universe that I would be at one of Joe Dispenza's week-long retreats in the US within the next year.
Bingo!
I went to Denver,
Colorado in July 2025.
Thanks Universe!
That event was incredible and felt life-changing in so many ways.
I came home knowing that I was a different Helen to the one who had left.
I've always been a fit and healthy person.
I love to exercise and eat well,
So it came as quite a surprise in 2019.
To discover that I had high blood pressure.
Seriously?
My GP couldn't find a cause for it and chalked it up to being one of those things.
Essential hypertension,
It's called.
My blood pressure was borderline for treatment,
So we decided to just keep an eye on it.
Within a couple of months of getting home from that Denver retreat,
I noticed my BP had started to climb and was getting pretty high.
The GP advised starting treatment and suggested I should get some tests done to check everything else was still okay.
One of those tests showed abnormal kidney function.
A repeat of that test showed an even worse result.
So off I went to see the kidney specialist in October 2025.
She told me that my kidneys were damaged,
Probably from all the years of high blood pressure.
And also the large amount of anti-inflammatory drugs I've been taking on and off for 12 years following a neck injury.
Unfortunately,
She said,
The damage is done and it's irreversible.
Now it's about slowing down any further deterioration.
So you'll need to give up salt.
Cut it out of your diet as much as possible.
Reduce your fluid intake.
Keep your blood pressure down and no more anti-inflammatories.
I'm prescribing you some medication to support your kidneys and you'll need to take that every day.
Come back in six months and we'll see where you're at.
Wow.
That was a lot to take in!
As I was driving home from the doctor's office,
My thoughts started to spiral.
What if my kidneys got worse and my health deteriorated?
What if I ended up on dialysis?
How can I eat out in restaurants if I'm not allowed salt?
What about all our plans for future travel?
I could feel my anxiety starting to climb.
Then,
As I sat at the traffic lights,
I gave myself a mental shake.
Hang on a minute,
I thought.
What have I just been learning about for the last 18 months?
Our power to change.
I know the potential exists for me to heal my kidneys.
And I know how I'm going to go about it.
So with my six-month follow-up appointment in the calendar,
I got to work.
I spent at least an hour a day shutting out the outside world,
Getting out of my conscious mind.
And traveling into the infinite realms of my imagination.
I did guided meditations about healing my body,
Focusing on love.
Creating new potentials and harnessing the power and intelligence that lies within me.
With my awareness,
I ventured inside my body and found my kidneys.
I saw them as two little beings inside me.
Just trying to keep up with all the work I gave them.
Trying to do their best despite their less than healthy condition.
I felt huge compassion for these poor,
Struggling kidneys that I'd inadvertently damaged.
In fact,
I found a new appreciation for my whole body.
I'd spent so many years largely ignoring my body.
If I wasn't ignoring it,
I was criticizing it.
Focusing on the things I didn't like.
Feeling annoyed when there was something wrong.
And just generally wishing my body was different.
I rarely acknowledge the things that were going right and all the ways my body has supported me every second of every day of my whole life.
As the weeks went by,
I fell more and more in love with my body and I began to really appreciate it.
The absolute miracle that it is.
Around 70 trillion cells working together in harmony.
Communicating with each other.
All of them knowing their role and doing it to the best of their ability.
I could clearly see how my thoughts influence how I feel,
Which influences the chemistry in my body.
Thoughts of fear and negativity stimulate the sympathetic nervous system.
And cause the release of stress chemicals which prepare the body for fight or flight.
Spending time in appreciation and peace.
Hope and positivity switch on a very different chemistry.
That encourages the body to rest,
Repair and heal.
I also trained my thoughts to focus on health instead of thinking about all the what-if scenarios of worsening kidney function.
I still took all the advice the specialist gave me.
I ate the low salt diet.
Kept my blood pressure down.
And took the medications prescribed.
But in my inner world,
I practiced a different reality.
One where I could eat whatever I wanted with no impact on my kidneys.
A world where my blood pressure was perfectly normal without the need for medication.
And one where my kidneys were vibrantly healthy.
I imagined this doctor at my six-month review and the huge smile on her face as she told me that my kidney function was normal.
I can't understand it,
She says in amazement.
These results are incredible!
I would get up from my meditations with a smile on my face,
Feeling powerful and positive.
As I went about my day,
I often thought about my kidneys.
I sent them love and thanked them for healing and for returning to vibrant good health.
I kept my colourful and happy inner world to myself,
Not wanting to share it with others and be subjected to their doubts and negative opinions.
I knew what I believed,
And that was all that mattered.
Fast forward to April 2026 and my six-month follow-up appointment.
I'd had a bunch of tests done a few days prior and was keen to hear the results.
When I sat down in her office,
The doctor said to me,
Well,
I was hoping to see a stabilisation of your kidney function,
Or maybe even a slight improvement with all the measures you've been taking.
But I have to say.
Your results are quite remarkable and not at all what I was expecting to see.
Your kidney function is pretty much back to normal.
That's significant reversal of disease.
And there was that smile I'd seen so often in my meditations.
It was quickly matched by my own.
The other positive result to come out of that appointment was that I could stop taking the antihypertensive medication I'd been on for a year or so,
As my blood pressure was actually a little low.
The specialist said I could slowly add salt back into my diet and watch what happened to my blood pressure.
Months later and my blood pressure remains in the healthy range,
Despite no medication and with normal amounts of salt in my diet.
So what does this mean for the future?
I truly believe that my months of inner imaginings created a healing effect in my body.
We are far more powerful than we know and I'm kind of fascinated to go deeper and see what else I can create.
Currently working on another part of my body that's a bit damaged.
Apparently surgery is the only option,
But I'm not so sure.
I'm treating my mind and body as one big experiment.
If nothing changes,
Then I just stay as I am.
No harm done.
But if I give it a try and I can actually heal the bit that's broken.
.
.
Whoa,
That would be huge!
I'll let you know how I get on.
During that six-month period,
When I was focused on my kidneys,
I definitely believed that my body could heal.
Partly that was due to everything I'd learned from Joe Dispenza and the other mind-body teachers I studied.
But I also knew that a return to health was possible because of the first inexplicable healing I witnessed back in 2012.
You can read about that story in my first post,
Miracles Are Real.
That's when the mantra,
All things are possible,
First took root in my mind.
Don't get me wrong,
I have the greatest respect for Western medicine and I'm not for one second encouraging anyone to ignore medical advice or treatments.
But I also know that traditional models of healing only go so far.
There is so much that lies beyond the boundaries of medicine.
And it seems like more and more people are tapping into that now and producing some incredible results.
It's an exciting time to be alive.
If you've got a healing story,
I'd really love to hear it.
The more we speak about what's happening beyond the accepted models of medicine and healing,
The more we normalise it.
I'm not particularly gifted or special in some way.
What's possible for one of us is possible for all.
