I'm Johanna.
I am a meditation teacher and nervous system guide here on Insight Timer.
You may have heard the term nervous system regulation and wondered what it actually means.
Put simply,
Your nervous system is your body's built-in stress and safety system.
It's constantly taking in information from both your environment and your inner world.
Trying to determine whether you're safe.
Or whether you need to prepare for a challenge.
When your nervous system feels safe and balanced,
It's easier to focus,
Make decisions.
Connect with others,
Sleep well and handle everyday stress.
But when stress builds up over time,
Your nervous system can become stuck.
In survival mode.
This might look like feeling anxious,
Overwhelmed,
Restless.
Irritable,
Emotionally exhausted.
Or like your mind just won't switch off.
For some people,
It can feel like being constantly on.
For others,
It can feel more like shutting down,
Withdrawing,
Or having very little energy.
So nervous system regulation is the practice of helping your body move out of those survival responses.
And into a state where it feels safe.
Safer,
Calmer and more supported.
And the good news is that it doesn't usually require dramatic changes.
Simple practices like meditation,
Conscious breathing,
Gentle movement,
Spending time in nature,
Or even taking a few moments to pause,
And check in with yourself can help.
Over time,
These small moments can teach your nervous system that it doesn't have to stay on high alert all the time.
If you're curious to explore nervous system regulation for yourself,
You'll find a wide range of meditations,
Courses and practices here on the Insight Timer to help you get started.
I hope this gives you a helpful place to begin.
