Hello and welcome.

Thanks for being here with me.

I'd like to invite you to get really comfortable and begin by taking a few moments to arrive and settle in the space.

Bringing your awareness to your body and letting go of anything that happened today or might happen tomorrow.

We're going to take some deep belly breaths together.

Five seconds in.

Five seconds out.

Focusing at the top and bottom.

I encourage you to enjoy the pause where we can just sit and be.

As we breathe,

Feel free to set an intention for the session.

It might be something as simple as staying present with the experience,

Feeling a sense of loving kindness for others,

Or maybe something more personal.

I encourage you to keep this intention at hand to help guide you through the practice and imagine yourself as if this intention had already come to fruition.

What would you see,

Taste,

Experience if this intention had already come true?

It feels like everyone and everything is so far away at the moment.

It's easy to feel disconnected from ourselves and the world.

I'd like to take a moment to focus on a theme of connectedness and compassion and use our time together to connect mindfully to the present moment,

To our emotions and physical sensation,

And to those around us even if they're not physically close.

On interconnectedness,

Einstein wrote in a letter to the New York Times,

A human being is part of the whole,

Called by us the universe,

A part limited in space and time.

He experienced himself,

His thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest,

A kind of delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us,

Restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

It's really easy to feel like we're alone at the moment,

Physically but also in what we're experiencing.

We can feel like everyone is coping better than us or doing more,

And we might feel guilt or other feelings about not being productive or being unmotivated,

But feeling sad or depressed,

Angry,

Frustrated or fearful,

Or even just feeling a sense of apathy or hopelessness.

If we can start to realize that this is a shared experience,

That we aren't experiencing it alone,

Even though we might be physically,

We can start to observe these thoughts and feelings with less judgment,

And we can start to have a greater sense of compassion for ourselves and for others.

I invite you to keep a gentle focus on this theme,

Pay attention to any thoughts,

Feelings or sensations that might arise in the body,

And to just breathe through them,

Let them be.

There's no need to be attached to them or judge them as good or bad,

Just observe them,

Curiosity,

And let them come and go like clouds in the sky,

Remembering that our constant is the blue sky that sometimes is just obscured.

The elevated states of chronic stress that we're experiencing as we watch the news,

Miss our family and friends,

Go crazy working from home or stress about not having work,

This directly impacts our body's nervous system and keeps us in a state of fight-or-flight in the sympathetic nervous system.

What we're aiming to do in this practice is move your body back into the parasympathetic nervous system,

Which allows your body to rest and digest,

And we naturally heal and recuperate.

I now invite you to try and make your body feel as heavy as you can,

Like it's made out of lead,

And it's sinking into the bed,

The floor,

Or the seat beneath you.

Feel the back of your head,

The back of your heart space,

Your arms,

Your legs,

All just sinking and melting down,

Pulling you toward the earth.

As you scan through your body,

Just observing any emotions or tension in the body,

And just letting them be.

Letting go just a little more,

Make yourself feel 5% more relaxed,

Sinking downward.

Now can you make your body feel as light as possible,

Like there are invisible strings pulling you upward toward the ceiling.

A feeling of lightness and levitation for your body,

Floating.

Can you imagine that you're a feather,

Floating on the breeze on a warm summer day.

Now can you combine those two sensations and experience the feeling of heaviness and lightness at the same time.

Now can you feel the lightness and lightness of your body,

Gently start to bring your attention back into the room.

Or if you're feeling the zone and want to remain still,

That's cool too.

If you're already in bed drifting off for the evening,

Go for it.

Otherwise,

Being gentle on yourself and moving slowly for the rest of the day.

I encourage you just to bring your mind back to the intention you set and to our theme of connectedness and compassion.

See if you can bring these into your day and into next week.

We're all going to have good and bad days and some days where you don't feel anything.

But know that this place of calm we've just experienced together is always accessible at any time to you through connecting with your breath.
