Do you ever shrink back from the limelight, preferring to stay in the shadows as an observer rather than step forward? In today’s 5 Minutes In Nature, Liz reflects on what it means to be visible. This isn’t about being loud or pushy. Instead, the question she explores is: what is it like to be visible from a place of truth?

Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott.

It's been a rainy old day and the rain has stopped for what I hope is going to be the next hour whilst I'm out walking and whilst the clouds are grey and very low scooting against the tops of the hillsides around me,

I'm really hopeful that I'm going to stay dry for the rest of my walk.

Beside me I can see a holly tree still with deep red berries on it and below it is a pool of water and that water is I know going to be so useful in the near future for frogs to come and lay frog spawn,

Which is really for me the start of spring signs is when I see the frog spawn in the pools of water.

And today is about being visible,

Being visible in your truth and speaking your truth.

I spoke with a friend today we met up for a cup of coffee we haven't seen each other for a little while she's been away and we were really looking forward to catching up with news and learning what each other was up to and as I was explaining to her about my real draw to work with particularly older women and this is a an area of supporting women around identity and taking up their space in the world and finding and articulating what it is they want to say she came up with a phrase that really encapsulated what I was trying to explain to her she said it's like being visible from a place of truth being visible from a place of truth and I've allowed this to be absorbed within me as I've walked for about half an hour so far because I knew I wanted to speak about it and it's such a beautiful phrase being visible from a place of truth and one of the things I've noticed for myself in my personal journey is that as a self-employed person being visible is something I am quite aware of is important in my world like being visible and letting people know what I'm about and what I'm up to is part of the way people learn about what services I provide and in my journey to be visible over the last 20 years there are often times I've emulated or copied other people who seem to be very successful so for me as a coach and a trainer I've looked at people who are coaches and trainers and seem to have lots of clients and seem to be able to charge lots of money for what they do and I've been on training courses with them and as I've tried to copy what they say and do I have in essence tried to be visible that's been the purpose of what I've been on those courses for and yet it's only in the last two years that something different is dawning on me something truer and more real and that is that being visible is not about being loud it's not about promoting or projecting myself into the world being visible for me is about tapping into my truth and allowing that truth to be transmitted through me through my work through my writing through my recordings here on Insight Timer there are other people who tap into their truth and are loud and are funny and have the ability to capture attention and tell brilliant stories that's them being visible from a place of truth in their world but where I've gone wrong is I've tried to copy that which isn't me so today's reflection is about being visible from a place of truth and the invitation is that you reflect on this for yourself too is that what is it like or what might it be like if you were able to stand in your truth and be visible in the world and when I say be visible that doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be out there shouting about what you believe or what your opinions are on the contrary being visible is that you tune into what feels right or wrong for you and you have a way of articulating that so that you are clear with your boundaries you are clear with what's important to you and you invest time and energy in that which nourishes you so for me as I move into this next phase of my life as an older woman being visible from a place of truth is something that feels absolutely resonates for me and I wonder how that lands for you

This is very fundamental for me Liz! You have spelt out what I have noticed with my business as a therapist. When I put my energy into connecting with my true self, how I help people in my authentic way, I notice clients get a deeper experience and my visibility comes naturally. For years what you describe as copying what I’ve learned on courses has felt untrue and I’ve felt that I’ve failed applying the learning. But today, you have opened the door of understanding! I can see that it isn’t me. Only when I am Me do I become visible 🙏🏼🫶🏼 Thank you so much Liz 🙏🏼
