An invitation to soften with the felt sense of a smile. For me, this is a great short cut to opening my heart and relaxing into this moment. Thich Nhat Hanh says that sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, and sometimes your smile is the source of your joy. Make yourself more susceptible to joy by relaxing into the experience of smiling, with its sense of openness, connection and wellness.

At any time we can come home to ourselves and relax into a wider more expansive sense of ourselves as a living presence.

And one way of doing that is with the sense of a smile,

So we can start with the image in our mind of a vast wide blue sky,

Just stretching wide in every direction.

And as we sense the curvature of the sky we can sense the sky is smiling,

This soft joyous curve of a smile,

Warm,

Benevolent,

The sky smiling kindly upon us.

And we allow our body to catch that sense of a smile,

So you might allow the energy of a smile to come into your lips,

That sense of our mouth as we're about to smile or perhaps trying not to smile,

That often strengthens the energy of a smile.

So just sensing that smiling energy around your mouth,

Your lips,

Sensing it in your jaw,

Sensing the strong muscles in your jaw and how they feel when they become infused with this soft fine energy of a smile,

Allowing it to play in your mouth,

Moving inside your mouth,

Sensing your smile inside your mouth,

Your tongue resting,

A real sense of ease that comes with smiling and then allowing that energy of a smile to come up to your eyes,

Sensing how your eyes feel when they're smiling,

Sometimes a little sense of crinkling or an upturn at the edges of our eyes,

So we sense the bright energy of a smile coming into our eyes.

And then we can move down to our throat and neck.

How does your throat and neck feel when you're smiling?

Just allow this very soft infusion,

This warm,

Joyous,

Well-meaning energy of a smile,

Sensing it in our shoulders,

The top of our shoulders,

So someone rested a hand there for a moment.

Our shoulder blades,

And then allowing it to fill our chest.

How does your chest feel when you're smiling?

How does your heart feel when you're smiling?

This warm,

Joyful,

Bright energy,

Just allowing it to fill your whole torso,

Your whole being,

Down your shoulders all the way to your hands,

And then washing through your hips,

Down into your legs,

So that this warm,

Positive,

Benevolent feeling fills our whole body.

And at any time,

It's very easy once we learn this way home to bring ourselves home very quickly.

And we just sense wide,

Smiling sky,

And then feel the smile in our mouth,

Our jaw,

Our eyes,

Neck,

Throat,

Coming into your shoulders and chest.

Really sense it pulsing in your heart and allow it to radiate from your heart through your whole being.

And as we allow ourselves to rest in this energy of a smile,

There's a very natural,

Subtle release that happens.

Our nervous system is soothed and calmed without any effort,

And our body understands that it's a safe moment to feel at ease and perhaps to feel joy or optimism,

Or to feel cared for,

Just to allow this light of smiling to shine on us.
