We have voices within us creating a never ending narrative of our lives and the world around us.
A constant dialogue of observations,
Internal contradictions and arguments about our decisions,
Our lives,
Relationships,
Parenting,
Our body image,
Our health,
Our work.
Rather than allowing life to be as it is,
We judge,
Label,
Critique unassuming people and things,
Placing them in categories they don't belong.
Doubt spreads like wildfire,
Clipping the wings we seek to spread,
Judging the wingspan,
Doubting their ability to carry our weight.
The monkey mind left unmonitored runs its meaningless chatter,
Replaying moments over and over,
Looping the same story again and again,
Recalling and ruminating on random memories of failure or loss,
Seeming almost cruel.
The narration can sometimes bring us comfort,
Creating a sense of familiarity with the world around us.
It doesn't feel as unknown or scary if it's inspected,
Labeled and placed into a mental file.
These incessant thoughts though rob us of letting the world be as it is in its neutrality.
We live at the mercy of the next thought,
Impulse or urge thrown upon us,
A life lived on autopilot,
Living in reaction.
We allow these intruding and unwelcome voices in,
Unmonitored,
Disrupting our peace and creating unrest.
Would you leave the front door of your home wide open for anyone and anything to walk in?
No.
Then why would we allow this for our minds,
The very place that houses our peace?
Take a deep breath in.
Deep breath out.
Allow your mind to quiet.
Simply notice what's going on around you.
The sounds.
Smells.
Your view.
No judgments.
Just notice.
When a thought arises,
See it,
Observe it attempting to make its way into the thinking mind.
Don't grab a hold of it.
Allow it to arise and pass unclaimed.
Let it drift by and subside as you bring your mind back to this moment.
Be gentle with yourself through this process.
We can't hear the messages from our heart and soul,
Our divine creator if we don't quiet the noise.
Every thought that enters your mind is not meant to be given energy.
Stand at the gates of your mind as a fierce warrior,
Only allowing in what's kind,
Loving and supportive.
Your inner voice can be your greatest ally,
Creating an imagining and exciting future of possibilities and adventure.
Or it can be your greatest limitation,
Keeping you stuck in fear,
Stifling your creativity.
It's a powerful tool.
It's up to you how you choose to use it.
