Welcome to this meditation to prevent and recover from burnout.
Burnout is an all-too-common challenge in our busy,
Always-on world,
And just the fact that you pause long enough to press play is meaningful,
So I'm glad you're here.
Burnout doesn't occur because we're weak or flawed in some way.
It happens when we've been running on empty far too long,
Because we care deeply and keep giving of ourselves even when our own cup needs to be refilled.
So let's begin by finding a position that feels supportive and comfortable.
If you're sitting,
See if you can let your back be upright without being rigid.
Think alert and also relaxed.
Let your arms and hands rest comfortably on your lap or by your side.
You're also welcome to lie down if that feels best.
There's no perfect position here.
Just find a posture where you can be still and stay awake for this meditation.
Now take a slow breath in through your nose and let it out through your mouth,
Pushing out all the air.
Do that again,
And this time you may want to let out a sigh on the exhale and signal to your nervous system that it's okay to slow down.
Let your eyes close gently,
Or if you'd prefer,
Simply let your gaze fall softly toward the floor,
Allowing your focus to become a little less sharp and a bit more relaxed.
Keep breathing naturally,
And begin to notice where your body makes contact with the seat or surface beneath you.
Let it register and take in that you're supported.
There's nothing to do or fix,
Nowhere to be.
Just sit and breathe.
We're creating a small refuge together here,
With a few minutes carved out from all the noise and the doing.
You don't have to produce anything,
Solve anything,
Or be anything for anyone for the remainder of this meditation.
You just get to be here.
So right now,
Just acknowledge what's true.
Maybe you feel exhausted.
You might feel cynical about things that once energized you,
Or even about this meditation.
You might be running on fumes,
Pushing yourself through each day,
Because that's what needs to be done.
Just notice what's here for you,
And gently bring your attention into your body.
If burnout has been living somewhere in the body,
Where does it show up?
Is it heaviness in your chest,
Tightness in your shoulders,
A dull pressure behind the eyes?
Try not to judge,
Just notice what's there.
And as you breathe,
See if you can offer a small amount of ease and comfort to wherever you're carrying the most tension.
Take a slow,
Steady breath in,
And let it out with a sigh,
Letting go of this tension and stress.
As you breathe,
Allow the shoulders to soften,
The belly to loosen,
And the body to settle just a little bit more.
Now,
Bring awareness to your face.
If there's any tension around the forehead or jaw,
Notice that.
Try to soften the muscles around your eyes,
And release any clenching in the jaw.
Let your tongue rest naturally.
Continuing to breathe with ease.
Move to your neck and shoulders.
This is where many of us carry stress and responsibility.
See if you can drop your shoulders a bit,
Or roll the shoulders and neck.
Bringing some movement into rigidity in those shoulders.
Now,
Bring awareness to the center of your body,
In the chest and stomach area.
Stress often settles here,
Through that guarded,
Always-on feeling.
If you notice any tightness or bracing for impact,
Try to let that go,
Even slightly.
And with each exhale,
Let the belly soften,
And invite a bit more stillness.
Now,
Notice your hands.
If you're gripping,
Allow them to uncurl.
Let your palms rest open.
And see if you can feel the aliveness and sensation in your fingers.
Bring your attention back to the breath.
No need to change anything,
No special way to breathe.
Just noticing the natural rhythm.
The inhale coming in,
The exhale going out.
Observe the breath the way you might observe or watch waves at sea,
Rolling in and out.
Steady,
Consistent,
Happening on their own.
Your breath has been quietly continuing in the background all day.
Through the stress and deadlines,
Through difficult conversations,
Even when you felt depleted,
It kept going.
Let the steadiness of your breath be a resource you can rest on,
And bring your attention to for a moment,
When you need a reminder to be present and to slow down.
Before we go any further,
Let's zoom out for a second,
And acknowledge that you're not the only one going through this type of difficulty.
You're not alone in this.
Right now,
There are countless others who are also sitting here with exhaustion,
Also wondering if they have anything left to give.
This is part of being human in a world that often asks far too much.
It's our nervous system doing the best it can to keep up.
So let yourself feel that connection to all the others who understand what you're going through right now.
Take in that shared humanity by putting your hand on your heart,
And breathing in and out gently,
And offering yourself a few phrases to bring some care and compassion to your experience.
You can repeat these silently,
Or just listen and let them wash over you.
Take a breath in,
And breathe out.
May I give myself the compassion I've been giving everyone else.
May I remember that rest is not weakness.
May I be kind to myself when I have nothing left to give.
May I release the belief that my worth is measured by productivity.
If you've placed your hand on your heart,
Feel the warmth and the rhythm of your own heartbeat,
Continuing to offer yourself kindness through this gesture.
If there's been a part of you,
Through this meditation,
That's having a hard time accepting this,
Or it's been harsh,
See if you can speak back to it with a compassionate reminder that rest is okay.
Say to this part of you gently and honestly,
I know you're trying to protect me.
I know you believe that if I work harder and push through,
Everything will turn out okay.
But right now what I truly need is rest.
Achievement has its place,
But in this moment,
Restoration matters more.
Take another full breath in,
Breathing in that compassion,
And exhale with a sigh,
Letting go and feeling at ease.
Let your mind drift towards something small that brings you even the faintest bit of pleasure.
Simple,
Small,
Daily thing,
Like the first sip of coffee in the morning,
The warmth of sunlight on your face,
Or the way a pet greets you at the door,
As if no one's ever been more welcome.
See if you can find that small ember glowing quietly beneath everything,
Where there's still some gratitude,
Joy,
And peace of mind.
Even if it's faint and barely a spark,
See if you can connect with this.
This is your life force.
This is what burnout,
For all its weight,
Has never been able to extinguish or take away.
And as you breathe,
Try to take in this nourishment,
Generate a bit more of this quality.
Let yourself take this in as a resource.
You don't have to heal all at once.
You don't have to untangle everything in this one meditation.
This is just one step toward finding joy and purpose again.
Learning to be present in this moment,
Open,
And showing up for yourself.
That can be enough for right now.
As we finish,
Take one more deep breath.
Feel a sense of groundedness and being supported by whatever's beneath you.
Know that you can come back to this refuge anytime.
This permission to pause,
To soften,
And for even a moment,
To stop demanding so much of yourself.
When you're ready,
Begin to wiggle your fingers and toes.
Blink open your eyes if they were closed.
Bring some movement to your body.
And as you step back into your day,
See if you can carry this with you.
The reminder that your worth isn't determined by output,
That rest doesn't have to be a radical act,
And that you deserve compassion from yourself.
Thank you for practicing with me today,
And take care.
