Hey family,
Take a second to relax,
Not to force calm,
Just to be here for a minute.
Let your body settle where it is,
Chair,
Bed,
Floor,
Whatever is holding you up,
Let it hold you.
Take one slow breath in,
Easy breath out,
Again,
Nothing fancy,
Just enough to arrive.
Let's talk,
This is the second foundation of mindfulness,
The first feeling that hits before the whole story starts,
Before the mood takes over,
Before the mind turns one moment into a whole storm,
The Buddha kept this simple,
Some things feel pleasant,
Some feel unpleasant,
Some feel neutral,
That sounds small,
It's not,
A lot of suffering starts right there,
Pleasant wants more,
Unpleasant wants out,
Neutral wants numb,
That's everyday life,
Pleasant says,
One more scroll,
One more snack,
One more hit of relief,
Unpleasant says,
Snap back,
Argue,
Shut down,
Run,
Neutral says,
Check out,
Go dead eyed,
Open the app again because nothing feels alive,
So this practice matters because it helps us catch the wave early,
Before craving grabs the wheel,
Before aversion lights a fire,
Before numbness steals the whole day,
And I know this one is real,
Because I've seen people I love get pulled by a feeling,
Before they even knew what was happening,
A little discomfort becomes a whole argument,
A little relief becomes chasing,
A neutral stretch becomes disappearing into a screen,
So today the practice is simple,
Name it,
Locate it,
Stay with it,
If it feels safe,
Let your eyes soften or close,
If not,
Keep them open,
If anything feels too strong,
Come back to your feet,
Your hands,
Or one steady sound,
Now check inside,
Right now,
What hits first,
Pleasant,
Unpleasant,
Or neutral,
Don't overthink it,
Just tell the truth,
Now locate it,
Where do you feel it most right now,
Chest,
Belly,
Face,
Hands,
Throat,
Take one gentle breath in,
Slow breath out,
Now stay,
Long enough to feel it,
Without obeying it,
No chasing,
No pushing away,
No turning it into a command,
Just quietly say inside,
This is here,
I can stay,
I sit with that for a bit,
Name it,
Locate it,
Stay,
If the mind jumped into a story,
That's ok,
Come back to the first wave,
Pleasant,
Unpleasant,
Neutral,
Then back to the body,
Where is it living right now,
And stay a little longer,
Without letting it drive,
This is where freedom starts,
When something hits you,
And you don't hand it the wheel,
That's real practice,
That's real strength,
That's how suffering gets interrupted before it becomes your whole day,
So take this into life,
Pleasant,
Don't chase so fast,
Unpleasant,
Don't obey so fast,
Neutral,
Don't disappear so fast,
Name it,
Locate it,
Stay,
And here's the deeper truth,
A feeling is not a prophecy,
Not every pleasant thing must be chased,
Not every unpleasant thing must be escaped,
Not every neutral moment has to end in numbness,
Sometimes awakening is this small,
A feeling rises,
You notice it,
You stay,
And for one clean moment,
You do not abandon yourself,
That is not nothing,
That is the path getting real in your body,
So may this practice help you catch the first wave,
Before it becomes a storm,
May it help you trust that you can feel deeply,
Without getting dragged away,
May it help you remember that freedom is sometimes just one honest pause,
Between the feeling and the follow,
Stillness is rebellion,
Compassion is a weapon,
Peace is within,
