When you check in, you’re using introspective attention to notice distractions. This is useful, but it means that you have to take your attention off the meditation object to notice distractions. When you're able to spend most of your sessions with at least some awareness of the meditation object, you want to begin to developing introspective awareness. Introspective awareness means that you’ll be able to notice and correct for distractions even as attention remains on the meditation object.
