Hi,
I'm Vince.
Today,
We'll explore the illusion of control.
Noticing where we try to hold life in our hands,
And where surrender may bring freedom.
Control often feels like safety,
Like structure,
Like certainty.
And yet,
It can also feel like tension,
Like bracing,
Like gripping something that was never meant to be clenched.
This is not about giving up.
It's about becoming curious.
Curious about what happens when the hand softens.
Let's begin.
Allow yourself to settle into a posture that feels upright,
But not rigid.
If you're seated,
Feel your feet making contact with the floor.
Notice the steadiness beneath you.
Let your spine rise naturally,
Not forced.
Just gently lengthened.
Shoulders pulled down away from your ears.
Just relaxed.
Jaw soft.
And take one slow breath in through your nose,
And a longer breath out through the mouth.
Again,
Breathing in,
And slowly out.
Now begin to notice your body.
Where might you be subtly holding?
Clenching?
Or feeling tension?
Perhaps in the shoulders?
The belly?
The hands?
The forehead?
Without trying to change anything yet,
Just observe.
What does holding on feel like in your body?
Is it tight?
Braced?
Contracted?
Narrow?
Bring your attention to one area that feels slightly tense.
Gently breathe into that area.
Not to force it open,
But to make space around it.
As you exhale,
Imagine it softening,
Just a few percent.
Notice what happens.
Is there resistance?
Is there relief?
Is there uncertainty?
Let your awareness move through the body slowly,
As though you are scanning for places that are trying very hard.
Sometimes,
The nervous system equates control with protection.
So if you notice tension,
See if you can silently say,
Thank you for trying to protect me.
And then gently invite a small release.
No forcing.
No pushing.
Just allowing.
Now gently bring this question into your awareness.
Where in my life am I holding on?
Don't rush to answer it intellectually.
Let it land in the body first.
Is there a situation?
A relationship?
An outcome?
An identity?
Notice what arises.
And as you sense where you might be gripping,
Ask softly,
What am I afraid would happen if I loosened my hold?
Let your body respond.
Does your chest tighten?
Does your stomach clench?
Does your breath shorten?
Just notice.
Now consider another question.
What happens if I allow things to unfold?
Not collapse.
Not disengage.
But unfold.
Feel into the difference between surrender and resonation.
Resonation feels heavy.
Surrender often feels spacious.
Where do you sense each in your body?
You may begin to notice that control is often an attempt to manage uncertainty.
And uncertainty can feel vulnerable.
So perhaps control is not the enemy.
Perhaps it is a simple,
A strategy.
What if you could appreciate the strategy without being ruled by it?
Imagine,
Just a moment,
Loosening your grip around one small thing.
Not the biggest thing in your life.
Just something small.
Let it breathe.
Notice what shifts inside you.
Is there anxiety?
Is there relief?
Is there both?
All is welcome.
Control as a concept feels powerful.
We speak about being in control,
Taking control,
Or even losing control.
But in a lived experience,
How much is ever fully controlled?
Breath comes and goes.
Thoughts arise uninvited.
Emotions shift like the weather.
Even the body,
Which feels so personal,
Changes beyond our command.
So what,
Exactly,
Are we trying to control?
Perhaps what we truly influence is our relationship to what unfolds.
There's a subtitle,
A profound difference between steering and gripping.
Steering is responsive,
But gripping is defensive.
Steering allows movement.
Gripping is defensive.
Surrender is not passive.
It is an active release of unnecessary tension.
It is trusting that the ground beneath you can hold you without constant bracing.
And sometimes,
Surrender begins in the smallest places.
Unclenching the jaw,
Softening the shoulders,
Letting the breath lengthen.
Notice now,
In this moment,
What would soften if you trusted life just 5% more?
You don't have to leap,
Just lean.
Curiosity is enough.
Bring your awareness back to your body.
Feel your feet on the floor,
The steadiness beneath you.
Take one slow breath in,
And a gentle breath out.
Notice the spaces where surrender might be possible.
Not everywhere,
Just somewhere.
Allow yourself to carry this awareness gently into your day.
You don't need to solve,
Control,
Just notice when you're gripping.
And remember,
Sometimes freedom begins when the hand opens.
Thank you for practicing with me today.
May the inner light in me seize the inner light in you.
Namaste.
