It's not easy to practice loving kindness to difficult people in your life. However, by harboring ill feelings towards others, you are actually doing more damage to yourself than the other person. The next time you find yourself in a difficult situation, pause, and try doing this short loving-kindness practice.

Settling into the comfort of your posture wherever you are,

At your desk,

Standing,

Or sitting,

Whatever you feel comfortable with.

Relax and close your eyes or lower your gaze.

Take a deep breath in and deep breath out.

Inhale in and exhale out.

Inhale and exhale.

Imagine someone who has caused you suffering,

Whether it's a loved one,

A boss,

A co-worker,

Or a noisy neighbor.

Imagine this person's face.

Feel if there are any tensions in your body as you envision this person.

Now try and soften that tension and simply breathe into it.

Allow that tension to melt away.

With the image of this person who has caused you pain,

Repeat the following.

May you be well.

May you be happy.

May you be free from suffering.

May you be well.

May you be happy.

May you be free from suffering.

Continue to repeat these phrases throughout your day as you envision this person and continue to send them loving kindness as this is the best thing you can do right here right now.

Brilliant approach to being kind to our own minds and to our thoughts about a difficult person.
