Alyson Stone

Dr. Alyson M. Stone is a licensed psychologist who helps people move out of constriction—the ways people learn to narrow what they allow themselves to feel, want, and express—and into greater emotional range and freedom. Her meditations and talks draw on more than two decades of clinical experience, exploring how deeply held beliefs can narrow what's possible and how those possibilities can gradually expand again. She’s a Certified Group Psychotherapist, national presenter, and longtime teacher and mentor to other therapists, helping them build satisfying private practices and remain engaged and fulfilled in their work. Her interest in the constraining power of deeply held beliefs has led to a longstanding focus on religious trauma, with writing published in the journal Group and featured on the BBC. More broadly, she explores the many ways people learn to restrict or hide parts of themselves—and how they can reclaim greater freedom. Outside of her professional life, she's usually found writing, cooking, traveling with her family, dancing to Motown, or playing with her mini dachshund.

Thank you so much for speaking up around this topic. Although the word religious trauma seems to slowly find its way outside, for me it feels there is not enough spoken about just yet and on how to actually start healing a step further when you are already able to practice self love: compassion for yourself and allowing all the emotions that are without self judgment. I got myself triggered recently by people publicly exposing themselves as christians, which made me feel very unsafe and started doubting my own judgements/descernment. I thought i founded myself a safe community with like minded people. There are a lot of very BIG emotions around the 'christianity' topic and to be honest I dont really know where to go with them and how to express everything that is cooking up inside. I would love to learn more. 🙏🏼

Another great and so very helpful video on religious trauma generally and on the benefits of a good and regular therapy practice more specifically. Such an affirming presence you have, Dr. Stone. I’m very grateful for this much-needed content on Insight Timer and am SO looking forward to your next videos! Thank you again.

Absolutely wonderful. Such an affirming and reassuring set of messages for someone who has suffered so long from religious trauma. Dr. Stone makes this complicated area understandable, and makes my suffering so relatable. Her ability to comfortably and soothingly normalize my experience, and to help me stop judging myself so harshly, is simply incredible. Thank you!
