Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882, Boston, Massachusetts) was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, thinker, Unitarian minister, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement in the mid-19th century. He influenced many familiar writers and thinkers, including Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, and Margaret Fuller. The fascinating thing while re-acquainting myself with Mr. Emerson, by reading his essays and collecting the quotes I’m sharing here on Insight Timer, is finding so many to be familiar but not realizing they were his thoughts. Enjoy.

Happy will the house be in which the relationships are formed from character.

Little minds have little worries.

Big minds have no time for worries.

We are always getting ready to live,

But never living.

We are by nature observers and thereby learners.

That is our permanent state.

Do not wish more external goods,

Neither possessions,

Nor honors,

Nor powers,

Nor persons.

The gain is apparent.

The tax is certain.

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful,

For beauty is God's handwriting.

What your heart thinks is great is great.

The soul's emphasis is always right.

Belief consists of accepting the affirmations of the soul,

Unbelief in denying them.

What I must do is all that concerns me,

Not what the people think.

God enters in by a private door into every individual.

Nature is reckless of the individual.

When she has points to carry,

She carries them.

Knowledge is the antidote of fear.

Economy does not consist of saving the coal,

But in using the time while it burns.

We must be our own before we can be another's.

Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself.

Go forward and make your dreams come true.

We cannot overstate our depth to the past,

But the moment has the supreme claim.

Without a rich heart,

Wealth is an ugly beggar.

The love that you withhold is the pain that you carry.

Good men must not obey the laws too well.

All mankind love a lover.

All mankind love a lover.

Wise men put their trust in ideas and not in circumstances.

Science does not know its depth to imagination.

Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting some on yourself.

If we encounter a man of rare intellect,

We should ask him what books he reads.

The years teach much which the days never know.

Men love to wonder.

That is the seed of science.

I'm Carol.

Thank you for listening.

I invite you to listen to some of the other Emerson tracks that I've shared here.

Embrace your journey with gratitude.
