Namaste.
And thank you for joining me.
Today we are exploring one of the most beautiful teachings from the yogic tradition,
The five koshas,
The five layers or dimensions of our being.
Each session in this series gently uncovers one of these layers,
Inviting us to know ourselves more deeply.
In this talk,
We'll explore the Anamaya Kosha,
Often called the Physical or the Food Sheet.
Rather than seeing the body as something to judge,
Fix or control,
Yoga invites us to experience it as a sacred home for awareness,
A living expression of life itself.
So whether where you are.
Take a comfortable breath.
Allow yourself to settle.
And let's begin our journey together.
Annamaya Kosha which is the physical sheep.
And you can picture this.
A friend of mine once told me that during her busiest work year,
She practically lived on takeout,
Coffee and late nights in the office.
She joked that she was surviving on caffeine and willpower.
But over time,
Her body started to send her signals.
Constant Fatigue Back pain.
Brain Fog She thought something was wrong with her.
But really,
Her body was simply whispering,
Please take care of me.
Now fast forward a year later.
She started adding short yoga stretches in the morning.
She swapped one coffee for the big glass of water.
She began eating home-cooked meals.
And slowly her energy started to shift.
She wasn't just surviving anymore,
She started thriving.
And that's the difference between ignoring and honoring the Annamaya Kosha,
Our physical sheath,
The body made of food.
So what is Anamaya Kosha?
The ancient yogis,
They described five koshas.
And a kosha translates to a layer.
So the ancient yogis described five layers of our being,
Five koshas of our being.
And annamaya kosha,
This is the outermost layer.
And it is a layer which we find it very easy to identify with.
When we break that word into two parts,
The first part,
Anna,
That means food.
And Maya,
It translates to either made of or composed of.
So this Kosha,
This layer,
It is literally the body that comes from food,
Is sustained by food and eventually returns to the earth to become food again.
It is the sheet we see in the mirror every day,
Our muscles,
Bones,
Tissues,
Skins,
Organs.
And it is at this sheet where our inward journey begins.
So why does this matter in our modern life?
Why does this physical layer matter in our modern lives?
Because nowadays we have started to treat our bodies like machines rather than sacred vessels.
When we need to push through exhaustion,
We use stimulants.
At work,
We tend to sit for hours,
Barely moving from our seat.
And even when it comes to eating,
Often we tend to eat quickly or we tend to eat while doing something else.
We don't get that opportunity to even taste our food at times.
And Sleep.
We sacrifice sleep as though it's an optional part of living.
And overtime.
OVERTIME This creates an imbalance,
Not only in the body,
But also in our energy,
In our emotions and in our clarity of thought.
These five koshas they are not separate they overlap A tired body?
Leads to scattered energy.
Poor Nutrition.
A restless mind.
Honoring the Annamaya Kosha,
It's about returning to the understanding that the body is not simply a shell that we carry around.
It is the foundation of all the other Koshas,
The foundation of all the other layers.
It is the foundation of all the inner work that we need to do.
And when the body is scared for.
Everything else automatically gets space to flourish.
So balancing Anamaya Kosha,
Balancing this physical Leo.
Firstly,
In the yogic way,
Asanas,
Movement.
Gentle,
Mindful movement,
It keeps that energy flowing.
It prevents our body from getting stagnated.
And movement doesn't need to be attending a 90 minute class.
You can Take a short pause during the day.
Stretch your spine,
Roll the shoulders.
Doing these small things,
They can kind of reset your energy.
You can think of movement as a way of saying I am listening to you body.
Then there's food.
Because this kosha this layer is literally made up of food we are we are food bodies whatever we consume that's that's what we become so this kosha is literally made of food what we eat It becomes who we are.
In yoga,
We have the concept of sattvic foods.
Food,
Zwitter.
Full of life,
Full of energy,
Like fruits,
Vegetables,
Grains,
Nuts,
Seeds.
These help to build energy,
Help to build clarity.
Over-processed foods,
They often leave us feeling either dull or heavy.
And food is important,
But mindfully eating it is as important as the food itself.
Taking a moment to pause,
Simply pausing before a meal,
Noticing the colors,
Noticing the smells,
Noticing the textures,
This transforms eating into a very conscious act of nourishment.
Then there is Nidra.
Nidra translates to rest.
Because sleep is one of the greatest healers of physical health.
Yoga Nidra Even a short body scan during the day.
This can help to release physical tension.
Our modern life,
It glorifies busyness.
But yogic wisdom,
It reminds us that true strength comes from balance,
Effort and rest,
Doing and being.
And then there's awareness,
Embodiment.
How often do we ask ourselves What does my body need right now?
What does my body need right now?
And awareness is noticing those subtle cues,
Thirst,
Fatigue,
Hunger,
Tension.
And this awareness it can transform the relationship with the body from control to cooperation.
You can think of your body like a musical instrument.
If it is neglected,
If it is dusty,
If it is out of tune,
It cannot effectively produce harmony.
But when it's cared for,
When it's tuned,
When it's played with awareness,
It becomes that instrument through which life's music flows beautifully.
So some practical daily reflections.
A morning check-in before reaching for your phone.
Take three deep breaths and ask yourself,
What does my body need today?
Maybe sometimes it needs activity,
Sometimes it needs rest,
Sometimes it needs some cardio,
Sometimes it just needs a bit of stretching.
What does my body need today?
During meals,
Slow down.
Notice the flavors.
Chew mindfully.
And thank the food for becoming a part of you.
Throughout the day.
If you've been sitting too long,
Stand up,
Stretch,
Move.
Movement is medicine.
And before bed.
5 to 10 minutes gentle stretching or relaxation.
Helps the body release the day.
It prepares the body for deep rest.
So caring for Anamaya Kosha,
Caring for this physical layer or this physical sheet.
It is not about chasing the perfect body.
And it's definitely not about following rigid health rules.
It's about living in reverence with the temple of the self.
Every conscious bite,
Every mindful movement.
Every breath of rest.
These are not just self-care rituals.
These are forms of yoga.
So today,
I invite you to pause and ask.
How can I honor my body,
This sacred sheet?
In one simple way.
How can I honour my body,
This sacred sheath,
In one simple way?
Because when the Anamaya Kosha gets balanced,
When this physical sheath,
When this physical layer gets balanced,
It becomes the fertile ground for the deeper Koshas,
The Energy Kosha,
The Mind Kosha,
The Wisdom Kosha,
The Bliss Kosha.
All these can really blossom.
As we come to the end of this reflection.
Take a moment to notice what has resonated with you today.
These teachings are not simply ideas to understand.
They are invitations to experience yourself more deeply.
If you're continuing with the accompanying Yoga Nidra practice,
You'll now have the opportunity to move beyond understanding and into direct experience.
Thank you for sharing this time with me.
Until we meet again.
May you move to life with greater awareness,
Compassion and peace.
Namaste.
