Hello there,
I'm Mark Rowland and thank you so much for choosing to practice with me this evening.
This short evening meditation offers a really simple way to gently close your day before you sleep.
Many of us go to bed with our minds still active.
We replay conversations,
Start to remember things we forgot to do,
And our mind starts to think about the following day tomorrow.
So tonight we are going to do something a little different.
Before you sleep,
You will ask yourself three simple questions.
These questions are not about analysing your day or trying to judge yourself.
Think of them as simply gentle invitations to self-reflect,
To acknowledge,
And to release.
Each one helps the mind and body settle in its own way.
So please,
Allow yourself now to become comfortable.
Perhaps you are already lying in bed,
Or maybe you are sitting somewhere quiet before you turn out the light.
But wherever you are,
Take a slow,
Easy breath in,
And a soft breath out.
Allow the body to settle into the support beneath you.
This first question will help shift the mind toward appreciation.
Because our minds naturally scan the day for problems and mistakes.
It is simply how the human brain is wired.
But,
When we gently notice even a small thing that went well,
It allows us easier to balance that pattern.
We remind ourselves that the day did also contain effort,
Kindness,
Patience,
Or courage.
So,
Your first question is this.
What is the one thing I was proud of today,
Even if it was tiny?
It does not need to be something big.
Perhaps you completed a task that you had been putting off.
Perhaps you spoke kindly to someone.
Maybe you simply got through a really,
Really difficult day.
Whatever comes to mind is enough.
Allow yourself to acknowledge this.
Not in a boastful way.
Just an authentic recognition.
You did do something today that matters.
Allow that small moment of pride to settle gently within you.
Your second question helps us remember how much we have grown.
Because sometimes we tend to forget things which once felt really,
Really difficult.
We are now managing those with more ease.
Life slowly teaches us resilience.
Moments that once overwhelmed us can become experiences we navigate with greater steadiness.
So,
Your second question is this.
What is one thing I had handled today that in the past might have felt difficult for me?
Perhaps it was a conversation.
A stressful situation.
Maybe a moment where you stayed calm.
Where in the past you may have reacted differently.
Notice the quiet strength that allowed you to move through that moment.
It's easy to forget that growth happens so gradually that sometimes we can barely even notice it.
But growth is happening every day.
You are becoming more experienced and wise every day.
Take a moment to recognize that deep strength within yourself.
Now,
The third question brings attention to the body.
Because even when the day has ended,
The body can still hold tension from what we have experienced.
Sometimes our shoulders remain tight,
Our jaws clench,
Or our chests hold traces of emotion.
By gently noticing this,
The body is often willing to soften and release.
So,
Your third question this evening is this.
Is there anything my body is still carrying that I can allow to soften and release?
Bring gentle awareness to your body.
Notice the forehead,
The jaw,
The shoulders,
The chest,
And the belly.
If you find any place holding tension or weight,
Just see if you can soften it,
Just a little.
Not forcing anything though,
Just allowing softness.
Perhaps take one slow breath in,
And one slow breath out.
And as you breathe out,
Imagine the body letting go of the day that has passed.
Allowing the shoulders to sink,
The face to soften,
And the breath to move naturally.
Now,
Before we close,
Let's gently remember the three questions.
What is one thing I was proud of today,
Even if it was small?
What is one thing I handle today that once might have been difficult for me?
And is there anything my body is still holding that I can now allow to soften and release?
These three simple reflections can become a beautiful quiet ritual before sleep.
If you ask them each night,
It's a way of appreciating the day,
Recognizing your growth,
And letting the body let go and rest.
Now,
Simply allow your attention to rest with the gentle rhythm of your breathing.
Feel the body supported,
The day completed.
And if you are in bed and ready for sleep,
Allow yourself to drift naturally into rest.
Or if you are finishing this meditation,
Before you go to bed to sleep,
Gently bring awareness back to the room and notice the surface beneath you,
The quiet of this space,
And the steady rhythm of your breath.
Thank you so much for taking this time to reflect and care for yourself tonight.
And if you feel called to,
I have a number of longer sleep meditations here on Insight Timer.
But for now,
Thank you so much for joining me again.
Have a beautiful evening.
Rest well.
Go in peace.
Namaste.
