As you prepare for bed, take a moment to get cozy and settle in. This meditation is designed to help you fall asleep peacefully by incorporating elements of the Jewish bedtime ritual. I have carefully translated and interpreted these prayers to make them accessible for everyone, regardless of background. This practice is more than just a routine; it is a gentle transition from the day’s activities to a restful night’s sleep. Begin by finding a comfortable position and taking a few deep breaths. Let go of any lingering thoughts or worries as you listen to the soothing words of the prayers. Allow the calmness to wash over you, bringing a sense of tranquility and peace. With each breath, feel yourself becoming more relaxed and ready to drift off to sleep. Embrace this moment of serenity, knowing that you are wrapped in a tradition of comfort and protection. Sleep soundly and wake refreshed.

Getting slow.

Letting go of evening worry.

Anxiety about what's to come.

Regret of what was.

Dropping into your resting place.

Whether you're going to sleep now or relaxing for eventual sleep.

We don't need to control it.

We're just giving ourselves time and space to relax.

To let go.

To say goodnight to what was without considering what comes tomorrow.

Deep breaths.

You might extend your breath.

You might extend it all the way to yawning.

Or exhaling on the word cella.

It appears in the bible as a breathing mantra.

Stretch.

Pop.

Wiggle.

And then come into a deeper stillness.

And an embracing quiet.

Not silence.

Not stoniness.

Just ease.

Your thoughts will wander.

They do.

It's because you're alive.

That's good.

Don't direct.

Don't rein them in.

Just let them unfurl.

Drift away.

Letting go of thoughts the way you might let a dog out in the yard.

See you soon.

Sinking in.

Letting gravity do most of the work.

People mess with you.

People shortchange you.

People bump into you.

People do wrong by you.

You could hold on to your pride.

You probably won't sleep very well.

So you could put it on pause.

Begin to forgive.

Opening up the possibility of forgiveness,

At least.

And since other people hurt you,

You hurt other people,

It goes around.

Maybe you want to ask a little bit of forgiveness from a person,

From the world,

From yourself.

It'll help you let go.

Of course,

You could just hold on to your pride.

It might keep you awake for a while.

May it all be acceptable.

Your eyes get heavy.

Your pupil dilates.

Get ready to lie down in peace.

With sweet dreams and without discomfort.

As the light fades from the room in this part of the world.

And the light goes on and on,

Just as everything is effectively eternal.

And all of this,

You,

Me,

Everyone,

Everything is connected.

Shares a unity of creation.

It all comes from one.

Take a moment to acknowledge that incredible state of being.

Give a little love out for that fact.

You are sheltered,

Protected,

In refuge and strongholds.

Covered by majestic wings,

A mighty shield.

Nothing to fear.

No evil will come your way.

Great and good forces will gather around you,

Guarding you everywhere you go.

Lifting you up.

There may be those who resist you.

There may be those who fight you.

They are not here now.

You can rest.

Sela.

Sela.

Lying down in peace and comfort,

So that you can be in peace and comfort.

So that you can be refreshed and wake up in peace and comfort.

Shielded and protected,

Separated from harm.

Going out of the day,

Peacefully,

So that you can come into a new day,

Peacefully.

Supported at night and when you sleep.

Supported at night and when you sleep.

Safeguarded by great and good forces.

Great and good forces that looked over everyone who came before us.

And great and good forces of the universe that support everything after us.

Can be healed.

Can be healed.

You will be healed.

The universe is blessing you and safeguarding you.

Breathe that in deeply.

The universe looks down upon you,

Turning towards you with grace.

Take it all in.

Take it all in.

The universe looks for you to give you peace.

The universe will deliver you.

Great and good forces surround you.

To your right,

Great force responsible for question and doubt.

You can deposit and let go of all of your concerns,

Just to your right side.

And on your left,

Great,

Good force responsible for vigor.

Settle down all of your strength and energy and striving on your left side with that force.

It can hold it for you through the night.

And a light shines ahead of you to guide your way through dreams.

And while you dream,

A force behind you will massage peace into you and healing.

And above it all,

An unfathomable mystery and glory.

Unfathomable mystery and glory.

Fidget and shift and adjust.

Move around your bed.

Squiggle and stretch.

Come into a deeper quiet.

Settling in.

Going slow.

Maybe your heartbeat slows down.

Maybe you're breathing.

Maybe your digestion slows.

Your body stops moving.

Thoughts drift.

Sela.

One last Sela.

You are blessed.

And everything is as it should be.

In unity and wholeness and eternity.

You are safeguarded.

You are given enough.

Have enough.

And you can rest in the palm of a loving universe.

Putting your body there to sleep.

With nothing to fear.
