Psalm 86 is a profound prayer of David,

A heartfelt cry from a soul seeking refuge in the infinite mercy and strength of God.

In a world that often feels overwhelming and disconnected,

This psalm serves as a beacon of hope reminding us that we are never alone.

It invites us into a sacred dialogue with the Divine,

Offering comfort,

Peace and assurance in the midst of life's trials.

Let us journey through this psalm together,

Allowing each verse to guide us into deeper trust and rest in the presence of our Creator.

Psalm 86 Bow down your ear,

O Lord,

Hear me,

For I am poor and needy.

Preserve my life,

For I am holy.

You are my God,

Save Your servant who trusts in You.

Be merciful to me,

O Lord,

For I cry to You all day long.

Rejoice the soul of Your servant,

For to You,

O Lord,

I lift up my soul.

For You,

Lord,

Are good and ready to forgive and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

Give ear,

O Lord,

To my prayer and attend to the voice of my supplications.

In the day of my trouble I will call upon You,

For You will answer me.

Among the gods there is none like You,

O Lord,

Nor are there any works like Your works.

All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You,

O Lord,

And shall glorify Your name.

For You are great and do wondrous things.

You alone are God.

Teach me Your way,

O Lord,

I will walk in Your truth.

Unite my heart to fear Your name.

I will praise You,

O Lord my God,

With all my heart and I will glorify Your name forevermore.

For great is Your mercy toward me and You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

O God,

The proud have risen against me and a mob of violent men have sought my life and have not set You before them.

But You,

O Lord,

Are the God full of compassion and gracious,

Long-suffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

O turn to me and have mercy on me.

Give Your strength to Your servant and save the son of Your maidservant.

Show me a sign for good that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed,

Because You,

Lord,

Have helped me and comforted me.

This opening verse sets the tone of humility.

David approaches God with the raw honesty of his vulnerability.

In our own lives,

How often do we mask our neediness,

Afraid to appear weak?

Yet here,

We are reminded that our need is not a flaw,

But an invitation.

When we bring our burdens to God,

He leans in,

Bowing His ear to hear our every word.

Pause for a moment and acknowledge your own areas of need.

Let go of pride and whisper your heart's truth,

I need help.

Trust that God hears and cares deeply for you.

Verse 2 Preserve my life,

For I am holy.

You are my God.

Save Your servant who trusts in You.

Holiness here speaks to our identity in God,

Not our perfection.

David affirms his belonging to the Divine and places his trust entirely in God's hands.

We too are invited to stand in this truth that we are God's beloved,

Set apart and held secure.

Consider the ways you define yourself.

Can you release labels of inadequacy and embrace your identity as one who belongs to God?

Affirm,

I am yours and you are my safe refuge.

Verse 3 Be merciful to me,

O Lord,

For I cry to You all day long.

In this verse,

We see the persistent nature of David's prayer.

He does not shy away from constant communication with God.

Similarly,

We are called to cultivate a rhythm of prayer where our hearts remain open and connected to the Divine throughout the day.

What does it mean for you to cry out all day long?

Even in the mundane moments,

God is near.

Practice brief prayers in your heart.

Lord,

Be with me here.

Verse 4 Rejoice the soul of Your servant,

For to You,

O Lord,

I lift up my soul.

There is a shift here to joy rooted in surrender.

Lifting our soul to God is an act of release,

A letting go of control.

In doing so,

We open ourselves to the joy that flows from Divine communion.

Picture yourself lifting your soul,

Like a gift,

Into God's hands.

What burdens can you release?

Allow joy to seep into the spaces you've freed.

Verse 5 For you,

Lord,

Are good and ready to forgive and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

God's nature is revealed here.

Goodness,

Forgiveness and boundless mercy.

No matter how far we feel we've strayed,

His arms are always open.

Take a moment to rest in the goodness of God.

Reflect on times when mercy met you in unexpected ways.

Whisper,

Thank you for your mercy,

Always ready to meet me.

Verses 6 and 7 Give ear,

O Lord,

To my prayer and attend to the voice of my supplications.

In the day of my trouble,

I will call upon You,

For You will answer me.

In times of trouble,

David's response is not to despair,

But to call upon God.

He is confident in his response.

This is an act of profound trust,

Knowing that God will answer,

Not always how we expect,

But always in wisdom and love.

Recall a moment when you felt answered in your time of need.

Trust that even now in uncertainty,

God is working for your good.

Pray,

Lord,

I trust You to hear and respond.

Verses 8 to 10 Among the gods there is none like You,

O Lord,

Nor are there any works like Your works.

All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You,

O Lord,

And shall glorify Your name.

For You are great and do wondrous things.

You alone are God.

David marvels at God's greatness.

When we face life's challenges,

Remembering God's sovereignty and wonder helps us to shift our perspective.

His works are unmatched and His plan is far beyond our understanding.

Gaze at creation or reflect on a past blessing.

Allow awe to fill your heart.

Affirm,

You alone are God and Your works are wondrous.

Verse 11 Teach me Your way,

O Lord.

I will walk in Your truth.

Unite my heart to fear Your name.

This verse speaks to guidance and alignment.

To fear God's name is to live in reverence,

Aligning our hearts with His truth.

It is a call to live authentically and intentionally in His ways.

Ask for guidance.

Lord,

Teach me Your way.

Consider one area where you can walk more fully in truth.

Seek unity of heart where all parts of you honor God.

Verse 12 and 13 I will praise You,

O Lord my God,

With all my heart and I will glorify Your name forevermore.

For great is Your mercy toward me For great is Your mercy toward me And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

Gratitude overflows here.

David praises with his whole heart,

Recognizing God's deliverance.

Even in life's darkest moments,

God's mercy reaches down to lift us.

Reflect on a time when you felt lifted from despair.

Offer praise from your heart.

Thank You for delivering me.

For Your mercy that knows no bounds.

Verses 14 to 15 O God,

The proud have risen against me and a mob of violent men have sought my life and have not set You before them.

But You,

O Lord,

Are a God full of compassion and gracious,

Long-suffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

Even as enemies close in,

David finds solace in God's character,

Compassionate,

Gracious and patient.

When we face hostility,

We too can rest in these unchanging qualities.

Bring to mind any conflict or fear.

Let God's compassion hold you.

Whisper,

In Your mercy and truth,

I find peace.

Verses 16 to 17 O turn to me and have mercy on me.

Give your strength to your servant and save the son of your maidservant.

Show me a sign for good,

That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed.

Because You,

Lord,

Have helped me and comforted me.

David ends with a plea for strength and a sign of God's favour.

He knows that God's help and comfort will ultimately reveal His glory even to His adversaries.

Ask God for strength today.

Lord,

Show me a sign of Your goodness.

Trust that His comfort surrounds you,

Even in unseen ways.

A prayer Lord of mercy and compassion,

You have heard my cries and held my soul.

Teach me to trust You fully,

To lift my burdens into Your hands and to walk each day in the light of Your truth.

When I feel weary,

Be my strength.

When I feel lost,

Be my guide.

Your mercy is great and Your love never fails.

I rest in Your presence,

Knowing You are near.

Amen
