Sound Bath Sessions 176: Liane Mah, Walter Chan, Grace Chen
It was still a warm December when we met again for her last session. Grace brought along Walter, who was going to be a part of the session. We took the ferry to meet Liane in Mui Wo at Ning's Yard, the spiritual retreat center she renovated, a short walk from the pier. Previously a shed, Liane worked with a local builder and used traditional building methods and materials to finish the center. She holds workshops about sustainable design and lets the attendees help make the bricks or apply finishes by hand. Her center has basic living quarters, a kitchen, a meditation space, a small library, and a bathroom. Liane and Walter also wanted to be a part of the project, so we recorded the next two songs as part of their 3 sessions. The brief tracks contained improvised performances with Liane playing a wooden flute, Walter on the ocean drum and harmonica, and Grace on her lyre and voice. Wonderful abstract, improvised instrumental performances.
