Ganesha or Ganapati is the Hindu deity dedicated to helping us overcome obstacles and move forward in life. Here is a brief talk or explanation of what Ganesha symbolises, and then there is a short “join in” chanting session to bring some loving, good energy into our lives. I’ll explain the chant and then say it slowly. When you feel comfortable, please join in. If you have a mala you can use it, if not, that’s ok too. The chant is, “Om Gam Ganpataye Namah.”

Hi,

This is Stefania.

If you like chanting,

Then this talk is for you.

I want to talk a little bit to share with you a little bit about the Hindu deity called Ganesha.

It's also spelled Ganesh and is also called Ganapati.

He's the elephant-headed Hindu deity of beginnings.

He's traditionally worshipped before any major enterprise and is the patron of the arts and sciences,

Intellectuals,

Bankers,

Scribes,

And authors.

His name means Lord of the People.

Gana means the common people.

Ganesh,

It's also spelled Ganesa,

Ganesha,

And also known as Ganapati and some other names.

He's the Lord of good fortune who provides prosperity,

Fortune,

And success.

He's the Lord of beginnings and the remover of obstacles of both material and spiritual kinds.

Conversely,

He also places obstacles in the path of those who need to be checked.

Ganesha,

You may have seen many images or statues perhaps in some shops or somewhere.

Ganesha is pot-bellied and his vehicle,

Also called Vahana,

Is the large Indian bandicoot rat.

The people who are devoted to Ganesha,

They believe that if Ganesha is worshipped,

He grants success,

Prosperity,

And protection against adversity.

In a lesser-known role,

Ganesh is also the destroyer of vanity,

Selfishness,

And pride.

As I said before,

Maybe you have seen some pictures,

Some images of Lord Ganesha.

There are several universal features that you'll pretty much find in these images.

For instance,

He has the head of an elephant.

He is shown with a big body showing that the entire universe is inside him.

His color is red,

Orange,

Or yellow.

Generally,

He has four arms and sometimes three eyes.

He carries a mala and certain other items like a lotus flower.

He sits generally with a bowl of sweets before him.

A mouse or a rat will be near Ganesha.

He uses the mouse,

As I said before,

As his mount.

This rat symbolizes Ganesha's ability to overcome anything,

To get what he wants.

Like a rat and like an elephant,

Ganesha is a remover of obstacles.

Now that you know a little bit about Lord Ganesha,

Sri Ganesha as he is sometimes called,

Let's do some chanting to open ourselves to the great and blessing opportunities for abundance and goodness that abound in our world and the strength to overcome any obstacles that arise along the way.

And if you are a believer in the power of thought,

I think we can embrace,

Whether we believe in Ganesha or not,

I think we can embrace the energy of calling upon a source to help us make it through the day,

Overcome obstacles.

So,

The chant.

This is the basic Ganapati or Ganpati mantra.

Om Gam Ganapati Namaha.

The meaning,

It means bowing down to the almighty Ganapati with all our existence and accepting all his great qualities in ourself.

Benefit,

As we discussed before,

It is said to ward off all negatives from one's life before beginning any work.

Chanting this mantra is said to ensure success in all the new ventures that we want to undertake.

We ask Ganesha to enlighten us and remove any inner and outer obstacles.

We ask to have our inner wisdom opened and renewed.

We open ourselves to receive the strength to face the challenges of life and to overcome fear and adversity in a positive way.

If you have some other beads,

Now's a good time to get a hold of them,

Or rosary,

Or you don't really have to have anything.

Just be open and concentrate.

I'll say it slowly so you can catch the words and then join in when you're ready.

We'll do a quarter mala,

Which is 27 times.

A mala is 108.

So,

For brevity,

We'll do a quarter one,

27 times.

And we're going to close it with Tingsha charms and music.

As a matter of fact,

Right now,

I'm using an app.

It's called Japa Mala.

The reason I'm using the app is because I'm a bit worried that if I used my beads,

It might get a bit noisy.

But if you have beads and you want to use them,

Please go ahead.

Let's begin.

Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha.

Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha.

Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha.

We've just completed a quarter mala,

Honoring the deity,

Lord Ganesha,

Asking for wisdom,

Endurance and strength.

And so it is.

Until next time.
