A gentle meditation reading Psalm 89 from Nan Merrill's Psalms for Praying. Before beginning, there is time to settle and come to stillness, then, as the Psalm is read there is an opportunity to welcome the words or phrases that stand out to you to be received deeply and offer their gift. This version of the Psalms is not a direct translation but is kind, gentle, and intimate.

Hello friends and welcome to this Lectio Divina on Psalm 89 and this is part one and there will be two more parts coming.

I invite you to come to stillness,

To become comfortable,

To find an attentive,

Relaxed position,

To let yourself settle and arrive into this space.

We welcome the stillness and peace of love to be present to you in this moment.

As you settle and arrive,

Let your body sink,

Softening where you can soften,

Letting go of anything that can be let go of and anything that remains,

Know that it is seen and known and responded to with love and goodness.

I'm going to read this part one of Psalm 89 all the way through and then twice more focusing in on some specific verses.

So part one of Psalm 89.

I will sing of your steadfast love forever my beloved.

With forthright voice I will proclaim your goodness to all generations.

For your abiding love rules the universe.

Your faithfulness extends throughout the firmament.

Your covenant from the beginning of time encompasses all who choose to walk the path of love.

And to all generations that honor your way and your truth will love make itself known.

Let the heavens praise your wonders,

O loving Creator.

Your faithfulness in the congregation of the Holy Ones.

For who in the universe is comparable to you?

Who among the heavenly beings is like you?

You who are reverenced in the council of the Holy Ones,

Great in wisdom,

Gentle of heart,

And one with all around you.

O most high,

Mighty are you,

Whose grace is poured forth throughout all ages.

You have blessed us with oceans,

Rivers,

And lakes to sustain our life on earth.

Yes,

You entrusted the waters into our keeping and in our stewardship we failed.

Forgive us,

O merciful one,

The heavens are yours,

The earth also belongs to you,

Yet we befoul the air and rape the earth.

Forgive us,

O merciful one,

The north and south you have created them,

The east and west as well.

With the might of arms we shatter the nations and scatter your people.

Forgive us,

O merciful one.

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of the cosmos.

Steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.

Blessed are those who know your love,

Who walk in the light of your countenance.

Blessed are those who call upon your name and extol truth and justice.

For you are the glory of their strength.

You give wise counsel.

Our very lives belong to you,

O loving companion presence.

So this second reading will focus in on a few verses and I invite you to notice any words or phrases that capture your attention.

You entrusted the waters into our keeping and in our stewardship we failed.

Forgive us,

O merciful one,

The heavens are yours,

The earth also belongs to you,

Yet we befoul the air and rape the earth.

Forgive us,

O merciful one,

The north and south you have created them,

The east and west as well.

On this third and final reading,

Welcome those words and phrases into the deeper places of yourself as if they will unfold within you and bring you their gift.

They may invoke a response in you,

They may be a call to action,

They may be a call to tears and sorrow,

They may come as a balm,

As something you need.

Be curious about what these words or phrases are bringing and how,

If at all,

You need to respond to them.

You entrusted the waters into our keeping and in our stewardship we failed.

Forgive us,

O merciful one,

The heavens are yours,

The earth also belongs to you,

Yet we befoul the air and rape the earth.

Forgive us,

O merciful one,

The north and south you have created them,

The east and west as well.

May the words and phrases that you connected with continue to bring you what you need and unfold within you.

May you know yourself blessed and loved and may great grace go with you.

Amen.
