Briana Mathews

Briana Mathews is a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, yoga and mindfulness meditation instructor, and fellow traveler on the journey of healing and self-understanding. Her work is grounded in the belief that mindful awareness and movement can transform the way individuals relate to themselves and the world around them. She holds a BA in Philosophy and an MD, as well as a Master of Arts from the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics. She has created and facilitated mindfulness courses for medical students, led trauma-sensitive yoga groups, and taught Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) groups through the Stony Brook Mind-Body Clinical Research Center. Clinically, Briana integrates insight oriented practices with mindfulness-based psychotherapies like Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) to guide clients towards their goals. Her offerings blend evidence-based mind-body approaches with the wisdom of contemplative traditions, creating practices that are nurturing, accessible, and grounding. Briana integrates an approach to healing that interweaves psychiatry, psychotherapy, mindfulness, and somatic-based practices like yoga, to deepen individuals’ understanding of themselves and their place in the world. Through this comprehensive and holistic lens, she supports others in cultivating lives that feel richer, more connected, and more deeply meaningful.
