Practical Ecstasy There are,

Throughout history,

Many mystics who experienced visions,

Trance-like prayer,

Spiritual rapture,

Sometimes levitation,

Stigmata,

Or overwhelming divine union and love.

Prayer and contemplation were their doorway into this experience of being grabbed by God.

Ramakrishna is one such mystic,

Who literally entered samadhi mid-conversation.

He would lose outward awareness and weep in God-intoxication.

Teresa of Avila was famous for full-body rapture and visions.

While trances and visions and ecstatic states sound amazing,

They aren't very practical.

So,

First,

Some definitions,

Starting with the word practical,

Meaning relevant to useful practice or effective action.

And then ecstasy,

Which we'll define as the intense state of rapture,

Or overwhelming bliss,

Which bends space and time.

The problem with ecstasy is that one can't function in 3D space.

For example,

The Indian sage Ramana Maharshi was so euphoric that he was malnourished and being eaten by insects when he was discovered in his meditation cave.

Likewise,

Anandamayi Ma,

Another Indian saint,

Needed her disciples to handle the more practical aspects of life.

For example,

She wouldn't remember to eat,

And needed help doing the most simple things required of her physical form.

Natural states of ecstasy don't come easily to many.

It certainly doesn't fit in our scientific westernized culture.

I would even venture to say that it remains inconceivable to the majority.

Perhaps that inconceivability is the only thing making ecstasy impossible to attain.

So let's get practical.

Understand that the idea of practical ecstasy affords us an accessible venture into the realms of heavenly delight,

While at the same time grounding us into our physical forms so as to impact this reality with that very rapture.

It is,

In essence,

The function of bringing heaven to earth,

Serving as a channel of that energy.

Many cultures share the practice of grounding and rising from various shamanic traditions to yoga to qigong.

The deeper we root,

The higher we rise.

So by rooting and rising,

By sensing and deepening our connection to both the earth below us and the heaven above,

We are,

In essence,

The love being made between the two.

It is through the opening of the heart that we are able to become practical in our ecstasy,

Not by rejecting our humanity,

But by embracing it along with all that the miraculous affords.

So take a moment to reflect on the following questions.

Ask yourself,

What can I do to share feelings of elation,

Joy,

And open-heartedness with everyone?

How can I better care for myself and others while in physical form?

In what ways can I take my high-frequency states and manifest tangible wonder in the world?

How might I allow an ecstatic state to alter my sense of sovereignty and inform my responsibility to the dream world I see before me?

Practical ecstasy is about actually being the bridge between heaven and earth.

It's learning to chop wood and carry water as is often described after an enlightenment or awakening.

But through the eyes that reveal,

Everything is simply God in another form.

It is bringing the sacred back to life,

Stepping into our power as creators,

Healers,

And lovers,

And dreaming into being a new,

More beautiful and enchanting reality by actually living it.

States of ecstasy aren't something we can command or force.

They are a grace given.

We can earn that grace through practice.

So let's do a little Root to Rise practice together.

Please make yourself comfortably seated and place your feet on the floor,

Back straight.

So once you situate yourself comfortably,

Hands resting in your lap,

Just begin to feel your breath moving the body.

As you breathe,

If you notice pockets of tension in the body,

Bring your attention to them fully.

Watch them and invite them to unwind and let go.

Take your time.

Be fully present with yourself and your experience.

As you feel your seat upon the chair and your feet on the floor,

Imagining a stream of energy moving from your root down the legs into the floor.

Sending that energy through the various layers beneath you.

Floor,

Dirt,

Layers of mud,

Untouched earth that has never seen daylight,

Various layers of sediment,

Currents of water,

Deeper and deeper into the earth.

Spreading your roots like the roots of a tree out and reaching down,

Down for nourishment from the mother.

And feeling that energy rise back up through those very roots as they absorb and pull up that earth energy.

Back through every layer and into your body.

Allowing that energy to rise through the root of your spine.

And when it reaches the heart,

Expanding,

Filling,

Nurturing,

And then continuing up through the neck,

Head,

And out the crown.

And feeling the energy now rise up as to the branches of your tree.

The limbs reach further and further out and above you to the sun,

To the moon,

Stars,

And beyond.

Feeling that cosmic force,

The energy of the father.

Feeling that energy return down through the branches of your tree.

Strengthening them,

Enlivening them,

Informing them into the crown of your head,

Down your neck,

Into your heart where the energy merges with the energy from earth.

This love made between heaven and earth in you.

As that cosmic energy continues to move ever downward deep into the earth.

Feeling these two streams of energy,

The earth rising up and the heavens raining down through you.

You are the node connecting heaven and earth.

Breathe and rest.

That ends today's practice.
