Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām Sām And what friends is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?

It is craving underline.

Highlight.

You have to remember this.

You can't ask me what is the crux of all this technique.

You can't ask me where are we going with this relax and smile.

You can't ask me what is Yuthri-Sr?

What does it mean?

It means destruction of craving.

Yeah,

You become very clear what is the Buddha's technique.

How can it be so simple as just relaxing these muscles and just smiling?

You have to do it a million times.

It's not simple.

It's very very very very very hard.

Aren't you finding it hard?

Yeah,

Some of you came and joy is hurting.

Can I not smile?

Yeah,

As long as inside your heart is smiling and your mind is smiling,

It's okay if here you're not smiling.

It is hard.

It's not easy.

Yeah,

So don't think that Buddha's technique is a shortcut.

It's the opposite.

Yeah,

But it's the sure shot cutting of craving.

Definitely if you make the right effort,

Right effort because that is a long effort.

Yeah,

And you consistently make the right effort.

And to make right effort what is important?

Yeah,

That is the right effort.

To do the right effort what is prerequisite?

I should be interested in myself.

If I'm not interested only in myself,

I'm okay with valuing in the bus of suffering of life.

Continue.

But if I'm really interesting in understanding my own mind and how to get out of this suffering and how to make my mind peaceful and how to lead a happier life.

If I really care for myself,

If I really love myself,

I can make the right effort.

It's that simple.

Question for you.

Do you love yourself enough?

That's simple.

Easy.

It is craving which brings renewal of being.

Renewal of being means coming back into body again.

Is accompanied by delight and lust.

What is accompanied by delight and lust?

Craving.

You like craving.

Have you noticed it?

You like that feeling of craving for something or someone or some situation.

It feels good.

Some people crave for analysis.

Analysis feels good.

Recognize that is also craving.

So there is delight and lust in craving and delight in this and that.

That is craving for sensual pleasures.

Craving for being and craving for non-being.

There are three kinds of craving.

One craving for sensual pleasures.

What is sensual pleasures?

Five senses.

Yeah,

All the five senses.

Craving for being means?

To be,

To exist.

I am.

You have this craving to exist.

Then what is craving for non-being?

Perfect.

You have this craving for liberation also and you have a craving to be also.

Can you see these conflicting cravings you have?

You're a joker really.

You're sitting here because you have these two conflicting cravings.

At least the ignorant people don't have this craving for non-being.

They're happy beings.

See,

Opposite kind of cravings clashing into each other.

One has to win.

Who decides which one wins?

I decide.

How?

By?

By effort.

So the last thing which will drop in you,

What will it be?

What does that mean here?

Craving for being will be the last craving that will drop.

I.

It's so strong.

Even after you understanding I am not in control,

Still I.

I'm not in control.

It wears another hat and it comes back.

I.

It wears another mask and comes back.

I.

I need to hear my life.

Start recognizing this within you.

And in quieter mind,

It'll get easier to recognize the I.

Yeah,

So.

Make that attempt to stay in equanimity and not get up from your meditation.

No pain,

No pleasure is the doorway into that quiet mind.

That's where you give up actually all the time.

You like your pleasure.

You like joy.

Well,

A feeling you feel so tranquil.

Wow.

And the moment it comes to no pain,

No pleasure.

Nothing is happening.

Okay,

It's over show is over and it was not a show.

That was just a trailer.

Yes,

From tomorrow.

Sit as long as you can.

And what friends is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering?

It is the remainderless feeding away and seizing giving up relinquishing letting go and rejecting of that same craving.

This is called the noble truth of the cessation of suffering.

How did you see your craving fading away?

Melted after we did the last week.

Perfect.

Every time you do that relax,

You see it fade away.

It just fades away,

But it's a joker.

It wears another hat and comes back in some time.

Yeah,

Because one more leaf has sprouted from that sapling.

It comes back again.

You relax again.

It feeds away.

That is why the relaxing of the meninges and smiling is very important.

One million times in one hour.

So if you're sitting 10 hours,

How many times in a day?

10 million times.

Have you done that 10 million times today?

Then you're not putting in the right effort.

Relaxing is very important.

I'm understanding the importance of a relaxation technique over a concentration technique now.

So relax,

Relax,

Relax.

Substitute the unwholesome with the wholesome.

The unwholesome fades away automatically.

Clear?

How?

What is relaxation?

Break it down.

That was not given.

The breaking down of things is what he has done.

And that's why you don't like the suttas.

You run away from them because it's so detailed,

Broken down,

So specific.

Yeah,

One part of you doesn't like them.

One part of you loves the suttas.

Are you seeing your love-hate relationship with this book?

You have actually served it in a plate,

In a table for us with a knife or a fork.

A cow,

Please?

Eat?

And what friends is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering?

It is just this noble eightfold path.

That is right view,

Right intention,

Right speech,

Right action,

Right livelihood,

Right effort,

Right mindfulness and right collectedness.

Very important.

Without the relaxation,

You would have gone on the wrong path of samadhi.

Without the right mindfulness,

Remembering to come back,

You would have got lost in just focusing on the breath.

That is what is called mindfulness on the western side.

So you're seeing there are many wrong,

Wrong,

Wrong ways of interpreting something.

You would have concentrated on a candle flame like that and just got a headache.

That is not samadhi.

Concentrating on anything,

Light,

Candle,

Sound,

Breath,

Anything.

This is not samadhi.

Relaxation,

That relaxation and smiling.

You're drawing a smiley on your face.

Drawing that smiley on your face a million times,

That itself is the relaxation technique that takes you away from unwholesome towards wholesome.

That's why you get into samadhi like this.

As if you're a yogi practicing for 20 years.

20 days also you don't practice in the whole year.

But you will still get there.

How?

Just by the right mindfulness,

Right collectedness and right effort.

These things happen even when you're walking?

Yeah,

Yeah,

Of course.

You will start seeing now all insights will come up.

Just a little walk on the lake.

It's just quiet.

Yes,

Absolutely,

Absolutely.

But till you're practicing relaxing,

Not focusing on the lake like that.

Relaxation,

Smiling,

Substituting every unwholesome thought with wholesomeness is the key.

It's the only way.

That's the right effort.

Yeah.

And what friends is right view knowledge of suffering knowledge of the origin of suffering knowledge of the cessation of suffering and knowledge of the way leading to the cessation of suffering.

This is called right view.

So now you all have right view.

You understand this.

You will not ask me again.

What is Buddha's core teaching?

What are we doing in this technique?

Then you have right view.

And what friends is right intention?

Intention of renunciation.

Intention of non ill will and intention of non cruelty.

This is called right intention.

What is renunciation?

We understand ill will,

Non ill will and non cruelty.

What is renunciation?

Ready to let go,

Not grabbing onto things because the more I grab,

The more I clean that much craving,

That much I increase my feverishness and that repeated thought repeated thought repeated thought.

I'm getting it ready to renounce ready to let go ready to drop that which is the cause for my suffering.

Does that mean drop your husband your wife your child?

No,

That attachment that I have,

Those strings that keep pulling at me keep tugging at me.

I have only created those strings.

I have to only cut them off.

The people are all there.

Yes,

I am always there to take care.

I'm there to love and it's pure love.

Drop the expectations,

Drop the conditions in love,

Drop you give me this,

You do that for me,

That craving clinging,

Ikki vikki mushi bashi,

Drop.

Pure relationship.

That's what you target me.

And what friends is right speech?

Abstaining from false speech,

Abstaining from malicious speech,

Abstaining from harsh speech and abstaining from idle chatter.

This is called right speech.

The first three we understand very well.

Idle chatter you go on and on and on.

This is something that you need to work on.

You don't realize only there is restlessness inside and this restlessness wants to get out of me and I don't know what to do with this restlessness and I'm talking about the weather,

I'm talking about this how how pretty this place is and talking there is no bulb in that one light and then I'm talking about how some yoga mats are just lying around and how people have just thrown their things.

Rubbish.

Idle chatter is not at speech,

It's here.

You're doing this with yourself.

When you enter here,

Don't you talk all this nonsense?

Look,

Look,

That person is sitting for so long.

Did she go for lunch today?

What have you got to do?

Oh,

He's been sitting so long but he is sitting in the same position and I keep moving.

Unnecessary idle chatter.

Aren't you doing this to yourself?

Recognize.

Cut it out.

Relax,

Smile,

Come back to your object.

Whatever your new object is,

Lots of objects have changed today.

Your new object of meditation,

Come back to it even while working.

And what friends is right action?

Abstaining from killing living beings,

Abstaining from taking what is not given and abstaining from misconduct in sensual pleasures.

This is called right action.

Very simple.

Sensual pleasures you understand very well.

You have to draw the line with your phone.

The moment I hand over the phone to you,

What happens on Sunday?

See how that feverishness comes up even with the thought of getting the phone.

Did you feel it?

A little Tanha came up.

Yes.

I feel yourself at that.

Congratulations.

That is Tanha.

It was so easy to identify.

So that Tanha,

See what it does to you.

Every time you go to the phone unnecessarily recognize you there is this Tanha.

That made my hand go to the phone.

Relax.

I just saw the phone 10 minutes ago.

It's okay if I don't see it for the next half an hour.

There is no emergency and if there is an emergency,

The phone will ring loudly.

I know that.

And it will continue ringing loudly if it is an emergency.

Can I just be?

You set up your time that only once every hour I pick up,

Check messages or email or whatever and I keep it or I check only once every two hours.

You decide your timeline depending on if it's a personal phone or an office phone or whatever.

Unnecessary every 10 minutes on Facebook,

Every 10 minutes on Twitter.

How is it adding to value to your life?

Every 10 minutes you want to check the stock market.

Every 10 minutes your heart attack you will get,

You know,

Looking at the stock market going up and down.

You're doing this to yourself.

Yeah,

Recognize this Tanha.

Recognize where does it come from?

This is this Tanha for checking the phone checking checking this that there is either a Loba or a Dosa or a Moja.

What is it?

Which one is it?

Is it the Loba Tanha,

The Dosa Tanha or the Moja Tanha?

What is Loba?

Translate for the people who are not getting the Pali words.

Great.

Dosa,

Hatred,

Moja,

Delusion not seeing things as they are.

Yeah.

And what friends is right livelihood?

Here a noble disciple having abandoned wrong livelihood earns his living by right livelihood.

This is called right livelihood.

Most of you are doing that.

I don't think anybody does any wrong livelihood.

You don't harm and hurt other human beings.

So at least one of them is all set for most of us.

And what friends is right effort?

Here a Bhiko awakens zeal for the non arising of unarisen evil unwholesome states.

And he makes effort arouses energy exerts his mind and strides.

So what making a zeal for not letting that evil unwholesome state arise in me which has not arisen.

Till today I don't have suppose the will to murder someone.

This is easy.

Most of us have never had such a thing.

Yeah,

Very easy.

So you've never had the will to murder someone or kill someone.

Yeah,

Still you put in the zeal that such an unwholesome thought also should not arise in me in the most turbulent angry moment.

Understood the first one.

Second he awakens zeal for the abandoning of arisen evil unwholesome states.

And he makes effort arouses energy exerts his mind and strides.

Suppose some evil unwholesome state has arisen like anger happens to all of us.

It is an evil and unwholesome state.

Now I make that effort to observe the tanha before it becomes a fully blown thought and that strong emotion of fire that wants to just lash out at somebody.

Yeah,

I recognize that tanha and relax and smile calm myself down calm myself down if it takes a zillion times to calm it down do it zillion times he makes that effort.

Strides puts in that energy.

That's what he's talking about here.

That's what's famous to be in our country.

Correct.

It is the same initially.

You just didn't know what this sensations are.

You're just observing in Satipa tanha because you've not become an expert yet.

But with practice practicing a couple of years you start recognizing.

Oh,

What is this every sensation is nothing but either fire or water or air dominant or earth.

What is fire?

Anger,

Hatred,

Jealousy.

This is all fire.

Yeah,

What is water?

Yeah,

The flowing feeling some of you are going into very nice soft feeling when you're doing your meditation.

This water element is predominant.

Yeah,

What is earth element?

Very heavy,

Very sad,

Very in lot of grief,

Despair.

Cannot meditate feeling very,

Very,

You know,

Sluggish lazy.

This is earth element.

What is air element?

Those who wanted to run away your air element was dominant yesterday.

Today it's gone for everyone.

Everyone.

Yeah,

So these these are just the sensations coming up elements.

Everywhere.

When I'm a beginner in meditation,

I don't understand what they are,

But you're taught don't react.

Be equanimous.

Observe and don't react.

Be equanimous.

Slowly,

Slowly when you practice for some time,

You start recognizing.

Oh,

What this is.

Then when you start reading,

Then you understand.

Ah,

This is what he's talking about.

Get it has to be stages in your understanding everything given at the word go on the first day would be too much to handle.

That's why it's done stepwise.

And this understanding also is not very easy.

No,

Some of you have still not understood than half and still not recognized it even after talking so much,

Right?

It takes its time.

It takes sensitivity and take sharpness of awareness.

One of the two is lacking.

You chisel your awareness sensitivity will increase anyways,

But sensitivity increases also by wholesomeness when you're too unwholesome very hard.

Lots of sorrow,

Grief,

Hatred,

Anger.

You're not sensitive.

Have you noticed you're very hard inside?

So sensitivity and sharpness of awareness is required to recognize these subtle things that we are now discussing.

Yeah,

So check.

Okay,

Is this lacking in me?

No need to beat myself up.

I just know now this is lacking.

Now I have to work on this.

At least I know what I have to work on.

Some people don't even know what they have to work on.

Yeah,

They're totally lost.

At least I am not lost.

I know these are the two things I need to work on and let me figure out what to do about it.

You can't figure out.

We'll talk tomorrow.

Yeah,

Don't worry.

I get you there.

Yeah,

So relax.

Just focus on wholesomeness.

Very,

Very clear.

Yeah.

Space or ether is that which contains all the elements.

It's just a witness.

You were being space when you were observing all the sensations in the process of Satipatthana.

But then you're not a good space element.

You keep going back and identifying with them and losing the witnessing.

Yeah,

Space is the witnessing element.

Yeah.

So we finished the second or the third one.

He awakens zeal for the arising of the unarisen wholesome states and he makes effort,

Arouses energy,

Exerts his mind and strives.

What are unarisen wholesome states in you in some people awareness is an unarisen but wholesome state that I want.

Yeah in some people sensitivity is an unarisen wholesome state.

Yeah,

In some people that equanimity is not happening.

They're trying very hard.

It is a wholesome state.

It is unarisen.

I have to work on it.

Yeah,

In some people simple joy is not arising.

Unarisen wholesome state.

I have to strive and work on this understood third one very clear.

The last one he awakens zeal for the continuance non-disappearance strengthening increase and fulfillment by development of arisen wholesome states and he makes effort,

Arouses energy,

Exerts his mind and strives.

For what maintaining what you have attained some of you attain jhana some of you attain great awareness some of you attain equanimity some of you attain recognition of tanha now continue it.

Don't let it go away.

He strives he exerts.

He really arouses the energy to maintain that which he has now attained.

Clear?

This is called right effort.

And what friends is right mindfulness here a beak who abides contemplating the body as a body are been fully aware and mindful having put away the righteousness and grief for the world.

What is this?

Kayaanupashtana.

This is Kayaanupashtana right mindfulness.

Satipatthana.

This is a description of Satipatthana.

That first paragraph is observing or witnessing the body as body.

Kayaanupashtana.

Second he abides contemplating feelings as feelings ardent fully aware and mindful having put away the righteousness and grief for the world.

What is the second one?

Vedana.

Third he abides contemplating mind as mind ardent fully aware and mindful having put away the righteousness and grief for the world.

He abides contemplating mind objects as mind objects ardent fully aware and mindful having put away the righteousness and grief for the world.

What were these last two?

Perfect.

Chitthanupashtana and Dhammanupashtana.

This is called right mindfulness.

Yeah or Satipatthana.

So some of you said when I'm doing the jhana suddenly Satipatthana starting some of you saying I'm doing Satipatthana and jhanas are starting.

They are all intertwined.

They happen automatically together.

It is a flow.

Yeah,

Some are just sensitive to one thing because they're focusing on learning that one thing.

You're just in the learning phase.

Yeah,

When you come to a phase when you can just practice at will you will see it all happens together and it's all fine.

Yeah,

Let it happen naturally to you.

And what friends is right?

Collectiveness right?

Collectiveness is Samadhi Samma Samadhi.

Here quite secluded from sensual pleasures secluded from unwholesome states a bhikkhu enters upon and abides in the first jhana which is accompanied by applied and sustained thought with rapture and pleasure born of seclusion.

For jhanas where you experience very soft and tingling tingling happy feeling in the body.

It's an excitement in the body.

Yeah,

You experience it when somebody gives you a birthday surprise that one feeling remember that is jhana one in padi.

It is called Pitti.

Yeah,

Don't worry,

Even if you've not experienced it you will get there slowly slowly.

It happens only in seclusion.

Now the second with the stilling of applied and sustained thought he enters upon and abides in the second jhana,

Which has self-confidence and singleness of mind without applied and sustained thought with rapture and pleasure born of collectedness.

So now you're excited joy becomes a softer joy.

And now you've accepted that you got a birthday surprise and everybody's home and so now you're still happy but it's not the excited happy now it's the soft happy.

This is jhana two.

Yes,

Very simple.

Yeah,

You must have already experienced something like this.

Most of us have in the very nice happy state of meditation.

We are experienced this kind of joy.

Yeah,

The only difference is here thoughts almost quiet.

Yes,

They're not too many thoughts very quiet quiet quiet.

Yeah.

And singleness of mind and self-confidence the confidence came from attaining the first jhana.

I can do this.

I know this is so simple.

Yeah.

No sukha.

Pajana to sukha.

With the feeling away as well of rapture he abides in equanimity and mindful and fully aware still feeling pleasure with the body he enters upon and abides in the third jhana on account of which noble ones announced he has a pleasant abiding who has equanimity and is mindful.

So in the third jhana,

You're very tranquil but not fully equal.

Yet equanimity has started and there is pleasantness also.

So remember the tranquility.

I talked about your very tranquil that is third jhana.

Yeah,

As if when you've gone to the doctor dentist and he's given you that injection.

Yeah,

The anesthesia and how you become very.

Yeah,

Very.

Yeah subdued.

They're happy.

You can't even feel any pain.

Yeah,

That subdued mind quiet kind of mind that is a tranquil feeling.

Yeah,

Equanimity has started coming in but has is not completed.

It's not the culmination of equanimity yet.

With the abandoning of pleasure and pain and with the previous disappearance of joy and grief he enters upon and abides in the fourth jhana,

Which has neither pain nor pleasure and purity of mindfulness due to equanimity.

This is called right collectedness.

Yeah,

You will see all these are only four jhanas.

Yeah,

That's because the fourth jhana again has sub jhanas.

Yeah,

The base of infinite space the base of infinite consciousness the base of nothingness and the base of perception and non perception.

We did it in yesterday's sutta.

Yeah,

Some sutta he's elaborated it some sutta shortcut.

Okay,

Understand the last four are included in this fourth.

Yeah,

That this fourth is upekha equanimity.

This is called the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering and bananas friends in the deer park at Isipatana that the target accomplished and fully enlightened set rolling the matchless wheel of the Dhamma,

Which cannot be stopped by any recluse or Brahmin or God or Mara or Brahma or anyone in the world.

That is the announcing teaching describing establishing revealing expounding and exhibiting of these four noble truths.

This is what the venerable Sari put the same because we're satisfied and delighted in the venerable sorry put us words.

Ah,
