Hello and welcome to this short talk on the dance of Shiva and Shakti.

So hopefully through this talk we will discover the roots of yoga.

You know when we talk about the history of yoga people often want dates or names,

Books,

Some kind of clear timeline.

But yoga isn't really like that.

It isn't beginning a particular day or with a single teacher or even in one text.

It's more like yoga has always been there waiting for us to notice it.

And the oldest way it's described is through story,

Storytelling.

And so one of the stories I love most is the story of Shiva and Parvati.

You might know Shiva,

The great yogi,

The aesthetic,

Sitting still in meditation.

And he represents pure consciousness,

Stillness,

That unchanging awareness that's always there no matter what's happening around.

And then there's Parvati,

His consort,

And she represents Shakti,

The force of creation.

She's the dance of life itself,

The rivers,

The forests,

The laughter,

The tears,

The heartbeat,

The breath.

If Shiva is the silence,

Parvati is the song.

If Shiva is the sky,

Parvati is the play of clouds and storms moving across it.

And now the story goes that Parvati was curious.

She wanted to understand how do we as humans find our way back to that pure consciousness?

How do we come home to Shiva,

To that stillness?

And she asked him to teach her.

And so Shiva began to speak.

And what came out of his mouth is said to be yoga itself.

The teachings,

The practices,

The map of how we move from restlessness into peace and from distraction into presence.

Imagine that yoga is a love conversation,

A teaching whispered between consciousness and creation.

And here's what I love about that story.

It shows us that yoga truly isn't a set of physical exercises.

It isn't even a philosophy.

At its root,

Yoga is about relationship,

About union.

Shiva and Shakti,

Stillness and movement.

The eternal and the fleeting.

And so if you think about it,

We are living that same story every single day.

There is a part of us that's like Shiva,

The witness,

The quiet,

The awareness that's just watching.

And there is a part of us that's like Parvati,

The emotions,

The body,

The chaos,

The creativity,

The energy.

And when we practice yoga,

The goal is not to get rid of one or the other,

But actually to bring them both together.

It's about this duality.

Now,

Let's make this a little bit more practical.

So think about your breath.

When you inhale,

That's Shakti.

That's energy coming in,

Movement,

Expansion.

When you exhale,

That's Shiva,

The letting go and the return to stillness.

And yet,

One doesn't exist without the other.

You can't inhale forever.

You can't exhale forever.

The dance is in the cycle.

That's yoga already happening inside you,

Whether you notice it or not.

Or think about the body and the mind.

The body is always moving,

Changing,

Aging and shifting.

That's Parvati.

The mind,

When quiet,

Can rest in stillness,

And that's Shiva.

When we sit to meditate,

We're practicing this balance.

Sometimes the body fidgets,

The mind wanders,

And then we come back again and again.

And that coming back is the dance of union.

Another way to see it is by looking at life itself,

Creation and dissolution.

Day and night,

Birth and death.

All of these are Shiva and Shakti playing with each other.

Life itself is yoga,

Always moving between stillness and change.

And maybe this is why the yogic path is often called a return.

We're not really learning something brand new.

We are remembering.

We're remembering that union has already been there inside of us.

The practices,

Whether it's asana,

Pranayama,

Meditation,

They're actually just reminders.

Ways of tuning back into that love story between the infinite and the finite.

What I personally notice in my own practice is that there are days that I feel so restless on the mat.

My body wants to move,

My mind is racing,

And I think I'm not doing this right.

But if I pause and remember,

This movement,

This energy is Parvati dancing.

It belongs here.

And if I just let it move without judgment,

Eventually I drop into something quieter.

And that's Shiva.

And the magic is in their meeting.

And maybe that's why yoga is never about erasing or escaping the world.

Not about disappearing into silence forever,

Or denying the body,

Or shutting down our emotions.

That is why there's so much emphasis in holding both,

Embracing both.

Being human,

Alive,

Messy,

And creative,

While also being rooted in that deeper awareness that doesn't change.

Some teachers say Shiva without Shakti is stillness without life.

Shakti without Shiva is energy without direction.

But when they meet,

When they're in relationship,

That's when wholeness is born.

And maybe that's the simple,

Most simple way to understand yoga.

So when we talk about the history of yoga,

Yes,

We can look at the texts,

The Vedas,

The Upanishads,

The sages,

And the schools of philosophy.

But beneath all of that is the myth,

The love story.

And honestly,

Sometimes that speaks louder than history.

Because it gives us an image,

A symbol,

A way to remember our past.

To remember that yoga is not something far away,

Locked in a book.

It's the very fabric of existence.

So maybe next time you practice,

Maybe try this.

Imagine your movement,

Your body,

Your breath as Parvati.

Alive and flowy,

Expressive.

And then also imagine the awareness that's watching it all,

The stillness underneath,

As Shiva.

And feel how every inhale,

Every exhale,

Every pose is just another moment in their dance.

Well,

That's the gift of this story.

I wanted to step a little bit away from abstract philosophy and just kind of hold a mirror and a reminder that the union of Shiva and Shakti is happening right here.

In you,

In me,

In every single moment of life.

And maybe that's what yoga has always been trying to tell us.

Thank you so much for listening.

And I hope you find this talk beneficial.

See you in the next one.
