Steven Hick is a mindfulness and Dharma teacher with True North Insight (TNI), MBSR teacher trainer, and former professor of social work with over 40 years of contemplative practice. His approach to mindfulness is grounded, accessible, and rooted in compassion and transformation. Steven began practicing yoga and meditation in 1979 and committed fully to the Dharma path in 2005. He trained as a Dharma teacher with Matthew Flickstein and studied with Thich Nhat Hanh, Adyashanti, Bhagavan Shanmukha, and Florence Meleo-Meyer. He is the founder of the Ottawa Insight Meditation Community and Director of MBSR Ottawa. He has taught mindfulness to diverse groups, including veterans with PTSD, people experiencing homelessness, and within First Nations communities—integrating mindfulness with Indigenous traditions. He is a qualified MBSR teacher trainer with certification in Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) and mPEAK (Mindfulness Performance Enhancement and Knowledge). A former professor with a PhD in social work, Steven is the author or co-author of several books, including Mindfulness and the Therapeutic Relationship (Guilford), Mindfulness and Social Work (Oxford), and Social Welfare in Canada (CSPI). His work bridges contemplative practice, social justice, and mindfulness. His teaching invites a return to what is simple and real, offering mindfulness as a path to clarity, freedom, and compassionate presence in daily life.
