All right,
As always,
Find your posture and settle in.
And just take a few minutes and allow the body to slow down.
Find a point of balance,
Not too tight,
Not too loose.
And just being in the body.
And we're not trying to get out of it.
Practice is never about leaving the body for some kind of Transcendental experience,
It's all about being completely here.
Each moment full of its own mystery.
The mind may want to make up some kind of other fantasy.
And that's just its own form of entertainment.
So just be right here.
Let's check in.
Is there any clinging or grasping going on?
What kind of energy has brought us to this moment?
How quickly can we let it settle down?
Can we do it in one breath?
See if one truly mindful breath Might be all it takes to cut an awful lot of it down.
So today we're practicing noticing clinging.
Holding.
As with many of our other practices,
This isn't so much of a hunt,
But a fishing trip.
Enjoy the still waters,
And if something comes along,
You notice it.
Let it go.
There's nothing to do about it.
Just observe and be curious.
So begin with sensations.
As sensory experiences form,
Become aware of them.
Notice how they generate a feeling.
Than a craving.
And now we're looking to see how we try to keep some of that going.
Or how we try to keep pushing it away.
Keep it out of sight,
Not of mind.
Perhaps there's a craving for some kind of sense pleasure.
A snack,
A drink,
Some kind of movement.
And notice how in that first instance it sort of explodes like a little light bulb.
This little flash of light across the body-mind.
And then immediately after,
The mind goes,
Oh,
I want this.
Yeah,
Yeah,
I want that.
Let's do that.
Whatever your internal monologue sounds like.
Just notice.
And see how that first flash doesn't last very long.
And whether you do something about it or not isn't really the point,
We're just seeking to see this all clearly.
I now invite you to notice views and opinions.
What do we hold on to?
How are we trying to protect ourselves by holding some views with such an iron grip?
Notice if we get neurotic about it.
Many views are very practical and there's no problem with them.
We are just trying to discern the difference between something practical and something that starts to become who we are.
Something important,
Inflexible.
And even if.
.
.
And even if in this moment we're not quite ready to fully release it,
Just relax the grip a little bit.
See if there's some relief in easing up on that tension.
And now I invite you to notice rituals.
Patterns.
Habits.
All the subtle ways that we reinforce and build up these forms of grasping.
What are all of the little things that we do that we don't want to let go of?
Some of these things,
There may be no reason to stop them,
But that's not what we're doing here.
Just simply be mindful and investigative of that which we find.
Some things,
When we become aware of them,
Naturally want to be sloughed off.
Others maybe aren't ready yet.
Or they're perfectly healthy.
It's not about judging ourselves here.
There's nothing wrong with you.
Any form of self-hate or self-loathing that enters in is just another version of this.
More ways to reinforce the pattern.
Sometimes self-hate itself becomes a ritual.
And for an awful lot of people,
It might be our favorite one.
Especially if we don't want to admit it.
So just bring compassion to that awareness.
The unification of mindfulness and compassion is critical.
And the other form of grasping is that the idea of self.
What or who do you think you are?
Notice all the ways we hold on to these ideas.
I'm awesome.
I'm terrible.
I'm unlovable.
Everyone should love me.
All the stories and definitions and labels and identities that we place on ourselves.
All the coping strategies.
But in this moment,
Where is any of that?
We are sitting.
Breathing.
All of this just lives in the mind.
Some move into the heart.
Into presence exactly as it is.
Just see the patterns as patterns.
Coping strategies.
Likely developed at different points in our lives.
But right now.
.
.
There's nothing to do.
Take it easy.
With a light touch,
Stay in the body.
Reality itself is like an infinite,
Multifaceted diamond.
And yet we are only able to look at one tiny little speck of that diamond.
What we think of as an imperfection.
Is possibly just a trick of the light.
So zoom out.
Just be here.
Right now,
In the only moment that even exists.
Aware and alive.
Especially all of these self-doctrines,
These identities,
Stories.
Just let them slip right through your fingers.
You can't hold on to them.
Where are the stories?
If you try to find them,
Where are they?
And if at any point you notice tension in the body,
Often associated with expectations,
Predictions,
Cravings.
Just let that be a beautiful reminder to relax,
Breathe,
Just be.
And remember that grasping and aversion operate together.
If we're looking to hold on to something,
We're also pushing away everything else.
And if we notice we're pushing something away.
That's an indication that we're holding on to something.
Practice here is to just see it.
And as we begin to end the session,
Just notice any grasping that starts to come up,
Even on the idea of ending the session.
Perhaps it's excited to end,
Perhaps it doesn't want to end.
See how we hold on to even that craving,
And stay mindful as we transition.
No judgment.
Okay.
Well,
Especially as we're practicing things like craving and grasping and clinging,
It can be easy for a lot of judgments to come up.
These can be aspects of our patterns that aren't very comfortable.
I really urge you not to condemn yourself for these patterns.
We're here to just learn.
Most of these activities developed for very practical reasons,
They just might not be working as well anymore.
We're here to allow discernment to show us that which is good,
Healthy,
Positive,
Normal,
When we're just making stuff up.
Inventing an entire world to live in.
So just keep practicing.
Keep going.
And let's end our practice today with one final breath.
Breathing in.
And out.
Thank you for joining me today.
Thank you for your practice.
And just keep going.
