Opening the Mouth of God The purpose of this meditation is to awaken subtle energy sensation in the chakras,

Spine,

And vital energy centers,

And through this activation to know and embody your oneness with life,

The source of all,

And awareness itself,

Within which all of this arises.

The medulla oblongata is a vital energy center in the base of your brain,

Just above where your spine enters your skull.

It's known as the Mouth of God because it's said that here God breathed the life force into your body and brain,

Enlivening your consciousness.

Awakening awareness in the medulla is a portal to experiencing the life force and to knowing who you are beyond your egoic sense of self.

As you feel subtle energy infusing your body and brain,

You begin to know yourself as an energetic being and feel yourself as part of the living cosmos.

You feel an inseparable oneness between you and the universe,

Between yourself and your source,

And you come to know yourself as vast awareness,

Beyond form.

In this meditation,

We'll tune into the energy of the chakras,

Spine,

And medulla,

And simply notice anything that is present,

In terms of sensations and feelings.

You don't need to feel anything in particular,

And if you aren't aware of any sensations,

You don't need to fix or change anything.

See if it's possible to just notice what is present,

Or not,

With curiosity,

Openness,

Gentleness,

And self-kindness,

In other words,

With mindfulness.

Learning to relate to yourself mindfully is a fundamental skill of subtle energy meditation and inner work in general.

To begin,

Sit comfortably upright.

Take a moment to look around and view your environment as a sacred space.

Notice how it feels for this to be a sacred space,

Or if there's any resistance to feeling your environment in this way.

Whatever comes up,

It's fine,

Just notice it.

Rest your hands cupped open in your lap,

Or palms down on your legs.

Feel as if your spine is drawn gently upwards on a string from above.

Feel a gentle extension of your spine,

From your tailbone anchored in your seat,

Up through the top of your head.

Tuck your chin just slightly,

Which helps to open the area of the medulla.

Lightly close your eyes.

Take a moment to check in inside,

And notice how you feel.

Whatever you feel is fine,

Just notice it.

Consider your intention for your practice.

Why is this important to you?

Consider dedicating your practice to the well-being of all beings.

Notice how it feels to do this.

Now,

Soften and relax your hands.

Allow your arms and shoulders to relax down.

Lightly close your lips,

And place the tip of your tongue on the gum line behind your upper front teeth,

With the rest of your tongue resting upwards on the roof of your mouth.

Soften and relax your tongue here.

Breathe in and out through your nose.

As described by Martin Jones in Holographic Breathing,

While keeping your lips closed and your tongue on the roof of your mouth.

As you breathe in,

Allow your jaw to gently and very slightly open,

Just a couple millimeters.

As you breathe out,

Allow your jaw to gently close.

Again,

As you breathe in,

Allow your jaw to gently and slightly open,

And as you breathe out,

Allow your jaw to gently close.

The lips stay closed and your tongue stays on the roof of your mouth the whole time.

This movement is subtle,

Like a baby suckling.

As you breathe in,

Feel as if the subtle opening of your jaw draws your breath in,

And as you breathe out,

The jaw gently closes.

Relax into this gentle suckling rhythm until it feels natural,

Like you've always known it,

And it's just happening on its own.

Breathe in,

Allow your jaw to gently and slightly open,

And as you breathe out,

Allow your jaw to gently close.

The lips stay closed and your tongue stays on the roof of your mouth the whole time.

Feel how this subtle opening of the jaw with each in-breath draws life energy into the medulla at the base of your skull.

And as you exhale,

Your jaw gently closes and the energy infuses your whole brain.

You can maintain this subtle suckling movement of the jaw with your breath throughout this meditation to enhance energy sensations and subtle energy flow throughout your energetic anatomy.

Slow,

Deep diaphragmatic breathing also supports your sensing of vital energy.

So think of your diaphragm as a dome at the base of your ribs.

When you take a nice deep in-breath,

This dome flattens downward and it gives you the feeling as if your abdomen is expanding downward and outward into the pelvic bowl.

The downward movement of the diaphragm opens space in your lungs,

So they fill from the bottom upwards.

At the same time,

The pericardium,

The tissue around the heart,

Is connected to the diaphragm,

And as the diaphragm pulls downward,

The tissue around the heart is stretched downward as well.

So there's a connection of this deep breathing rhythm with heart rhythm.

Together,

These two rhythms support the flow of cerebrospinal fluid that bays the brain and spinal cord.

This is a deep physiology that supports your spiritual practice.

So now,

Take several slow,

Deep diaphragmatic breaths.

As you breathe in,

Feel a downward pressure in your pelvic bowl,

Feel your abdomen expand slightly,

And feel your lungs filling from bottom to top.

And as you breathe out,

Feel your abdomen relax inward and your lungs empty out.

Feel the subtle suckling jaw movement synchronized with the movement of the diaphragm,

So that as you breathe in,

The diaphragm contracts downwards and your jaw slightly opens.

And as you breathe out,

The diaphragm relaxes upward and your jaw gently closes.

Continue breathing this way throughout this meditation.

As you breathe in,

The diaphragm contracts downwards and your jaw slightly opens.

And as you breathe out,

The diaphragm relaxes upward and the jaw gently closes.

Your lips stay closed,

The tongue stays on the roof of your mouth,

And you breathe in and out through your nose.

Now,

Let's move to sensing the first chakra.

The first chakra is called Muladhara,

At the base of your spine.

You can feel yourself sitting on this energy center in the area of your tailbone.

Feel as if you are anchored and grounded into your seat through your first chakra.

As you tune into this area,

Notice how it feels.

This first chakra correlates with being grounded in the body,

With your inherited DNA,

And with your basic survival needs and safety.

Do you feel comfortable in this energy center?

Just notice what you feel.

If you don't feel anything,

That's fine too.

It takes practice to cultivate energy sensitivity.

Take a few slow,

Deep breaths into and through the first chakra.

Now,

Take a deep breath in and feel as if your breath is drawn from your first chakra up through the spine a few inches into your sacrum.

This is the second chakra,

Called Svadhisthana.

The second chakra correlates with primary relationships,

Sexual energy,

And a sense of belonging.

Tune into this chakra and notice anything you sense or feel.

Are you comfortable in this chakra?

Again,

You may or may not feel anything.

Just taking a moment to pay attention to this area is how you begin to awaken your energetic senses.

Take a few slow,

Deep breaths into and through the second chakra.

Now,

Take another inward breath and feel the energy drawn up through the spine into the third chakra,

Called Manipura,

In the lumbar spine behind your navel.

The third chakra relates to feelings of personal empowerment,

Will,

Confidence,

And action.

Pause and notice any sensations or feelings in this area,

Both in the spine and the area of the navel.

Does this area feel full or empty?

Do you feel comfortable in this area?

Does it feel relaxed and open or tight and constricted?

Just notice what you feel.

Take a few slow,

Deep breaths into and through the third chakra in the spine behind the navel.

Now,

Take another inward breath and feel the energy drawn up through your spine to an area behind your heart.

Your heart,

Or Anahata chakra,

Relates to feelings of openness,

Love and connection,

To your ability to embrace life,

And to ways you protect yourself and relationships as well.

Notice the felt sense behind your heart.

Is there any tension in your back behind your heart?

This can be a spot where you hold tension from protecting your heart.

Is there an openness forwards and backwards from your heart?

Just notice anything you feel.

Take a few slow,

Deep breaths into and through the fourth chakra.

Now,

Take another inward breath and feel the breath drawn farther up through the spine,

To your neck,

Behind the base of your throat,

The fifth chakra,

Vishuddhi.

This chakra relates to self-expression and to the ability to listen,

Speak and create.

Notice any feelings around this chakra.

Does your throat feel open or closed?

Is there any tension here?

Take a few slow,

Deep breaths into and through the fifth chakra.

Now,

Tuck your chin just slightly and draw your in-breath upward from the throat chakra,

Right up through the medulla oblongata at the base of your skull,

And into the center of your brain,

And the sixth chakra.

This chakra is called Ajna.

See if you can sense from the center of your brain to the back of your skull to the medulla,

And forward to the third eye point,

Just above and between your eyebrows.

You might feel a line of energetic connection through the whole center of your brain,

From back to front,

Associated with this sixth chakra.

The sixth chakra is related to executive function,

Intuition,

Knowing,

And the ability to focus attention,

As well as the infusion of life force.

Notice the felt sense of this area from the medulla through the center of your brain to the third eye.

Imagine and feel an opening,

Like the mouth of God,

At the medulla in the base of your skull in the back,

As if it's a portal for the inflow of life energy.

Breathe in through the medulla to the center of the brain,

And breathe out through the third eye.

Feel the connection of the medulla through the center of your brain,

Through the third eye.

Breathe in through the medulla and feel this incoming cosmic energy,

Flowing into the center of your brain,

And breathe this energy out through the third eye.

Now,

Rest your attention in the center of your brain.

Just relax here for a moment.

Feel the life force glowing here in the center of your brain.

Now,

Draw your in-breath from the center of your brain,

Up to the top of your head,

To the seventh chakra,

Sahasrara,

Also called the crown chakra.

This chakra is associated with universal consciousness and transcendent awareness.

Tune into the seventh chakra and see what you notice.

Does this area feel open?

Just notice anything you feel.

Now,

Breathe in through the medulla and breathe out through the crown chakra at the top of your head.

Take several breaths in this way.

Breathe in through the medulla and breathe out through the crown chakra at the top of your head.

Pause at the crown chakra for a moment.

You might feel a tingling sensation as this chakra is activated.

The crown chakra is like a distributor of this life energy through your whole body,

So you might feel the energy flowing down over and through your whole body,

Through your arms and legs,

Right down through every cell,

Down through your tailbone,

Into the earth.

Now,

Breathe in through the mouth of God and up through the top of your head.

Pause and feel the tingling sensations at the crown point and exhale,

Feeling the energy cascading down like a waterfall over your back,

Down through your chakras,

Down through your arms and legs,

Down through your tailbone and down into the ground.

Breathe in through the mouth of God and up through the top of your head.

Pause and feel the tingling sensations at the crown point.

Exhale and feel energy cascading down like a waterfall over your back,

Down through your chakras,

Down through your arms and legs,

Down through your tailbone and down into the ground.

Take several slow deep breaths in this way.

Your whole body feels like the cosmos,

Like the cosmos is breathing you into being.

Every one of your cells is lit up with life energy from your source.

All your energy centers are awake and aware.

The universe is breathing you into life.

The mouth of God is breathing life into you and through you.

Rest in this felt sense of the universal breath.

Rest in this felt sense of the universal breath.

The universe is breathing you.

Now,

Focus down into the first chakra.

Keeping your lips closed and your tongue on the roof of your mouth,

Breathe in a deep diaphragmatic breath as your jaw opens slightly.

Squeeze your perineum at the base of your spine and feel as if the energy of the whole universe is drawn upwards through your spine,

Through every chakra,

Through the medulla,

Through the center of the brain to the seventh chakra at the top of your head.

Pause and feel the energy tingling here at the top of your head.

And then exhale.

Your jaw gently closes and the energy cascades down like a waterfall,

Cleansing,

Healing,

And infusing every cell in your whole body,

Down through all your chakras,

Down through your arms and legs,

Down through your tailbone and down into the earth.

Take several slow deep breaths in this way.

Focus down into the first chakra.

Breathe in a deep diaphragmatic breath as your jaw gently opens.

Squeeze your perineum at the base of your spine and feel as if the energy of the whole universe is drawn upwards through your spine,

Up through every chakra,

Through the medulla,

Through the center of the brain to the seventh chakra at the top of your head.

Pause and feel the energy tingling here at the top of your head.

And then exhale.

Your jaw gently closes and the energy cascades down like a waterfall,

Cleansing,

Healing,

And infusing every cell in your whole body,

Down through all your chakras,

Down through your arms and legs,

Down through your tailbone and down into the earth.

Continue breathing in this way.

Move breathing and feel your oneness with the earth and with all beings through your tailbone,

Anchored in your seat,

Connected with the earth.

Rest in your felt sense of oneness with the earth and with all beings,

Your intimate belonging,

Here.

Now rest down into the earth,

Into the deep oneness,

Peace and stillness of the earth.

Now be aware of the one who is aware of this oneness,

This belonging.

Who is aware?

Be awareness itself,

Within which all of this appears.

Sense out to the edges of awareness.

Are there any edges or limits to awareness?

No,

Awareness is limitless.

Rest as vast,

Timeless,

Dimensionless,

Within which everything arises.

Feel the all-embracing oneness.

This vast openness and luminous knowing.

Now,

Slowly,

Very slowly,

Begin to open your eyes.

Be aware of the space inside your skin.

Together with the vastness all around.

As one vibrant space of awareness.

Feel the awakened clarity at the top of your head.

The soft,

Relaxed openness in your hands.

Feel the deep oneness.

And the grounded presence of oneness with all of life,

Through your tailbone,

Anchored in your seat,

Connected with the earth.

Notice how you feel.

Record this feeling of vitality,

Openness,

And oneness with all beings,

With all of life.

You are an expression of the mouth of God.

An expression of source.

A movement of the whole.

You are awareness itself,

Within which all of this arises.

Record this feeling of embodied knowing in every cell and your whole energy field.

So you remember it,

Live from it,

And share it with others wherever you go.

What would it be like to move through life knowing yourself as an expression of source?

Inseparably one,

Belonging,

And whole.

Living as awareness itself.

Embracing every moment,

Every being.

And every appearance of suffering with openness,

Kindness,

And compassion.

Take a moment to write down anything you'd like to remember from this meditative experience,

Including any insights and inspirations.
