In the discipline of Ashtanga Yoga, the first value that Patanjali instills in us is Ahimsa, 'non-violence'. Understand where this violence in all of us is coming from, how to overcome it, and what is the difference is the art of fighting between Mike Tyson and Bruce Lee. ====== Join me in a 30 min meditation session every day at 7 AM CET on my website.

Namaste and a very warm welcome to all of you in this daily live meditation session with me the answer where we are going through yoga sutras of Patanjali in the Ashtanga yoga currently Patanjali is establishing the values the rules in us so that we can really move towards purifying our consciousness towards truth towards inner peace towards bliss before all that happens he says the first thing that has to happen is establishment of certain values certain rules which are not only applicable for those who are becoming only yogis and monks and living life in monasteries but also for all of us so these rules these values are universal they are independent of time place situation and everything else that you may consider we have summarized these rules these values in the past sessions and now we will go into them in detail the first value which Patanjali talks about is ahimsa non-violence he says in the presence of one firmly established in non-violence all hostilities cease let me repeat in the presence of one firmly established in non-violence all hostilities cease if I ask you are you violent you would say no you're not violent if you ask your neighbor are you violent the neighbor most likely would say no if the neighbor asks their neighbor are they violent they will also say no and so on and if you ask everyone in the world are they violent they will say no they are not violent and why have we so much violence in this world if everybody is not having the violence is everybody is not the cause of the violence why do we have so much violence in the world where is this violence coming from is it only violence towards others or has this to do with oneself as well in yoga before we point a finger at the other we always look inside the whole process of yoga meditation spirituality has less to do with any kind of belief system any kind of practice if it has to be summarized in one sentence in one small sutra that would be turning inwards looking within finding answers within and if you turn inwards if you look within not for the violence outside look for the violence within you will be surprised how much violence you may have and I'm not talking about the violence for the others that is the expression that you may have of violence but violence for oneself can you imagine the possibility that you are violent to yourself first how deep that violence for oneself is how to get over that violence for oneself how do you do that do you ever in your life get those moments to get rid of the violence that you have inside if not then you keep on expressing this outside in the world and calling this as that you are not doing anything wrong you are non-violent and there is violence somehow for some reason in the world everybody suffers so take this moment in this session to turn inwards nobody's checking on you nobody's blaming you you yourself are the judge you yourself are the witness you yourself are the victim that's the most important of the violence that you carry within you let us understand where is this violence arising from in us what is this violence they say when a child is born into this world the reason why he cries for the first time is also an expression that crying of the child is the first expression of his violence because he's thrown from the paradise or from wherever into this world which is having all sorts of structures all sorts of manifestations is somewhat of a limited experience the experience is physical the experience is psychological but it does not go any more beyond so the one that is thrown into the body the one that is thrown into this life is first of all crying because he apparently is thrown from somewhere where there was expansion where there was no form and now he has to learn the form he has to be in the form to understand that this is an opportunity and not somewhat of a misery is the understanding and wisdom of life until that understanding and that wisdom of life is established in oneself there will be violence there will be that inner cry which started to happen when we took the first breath with that first breath that first cry is the same cry the same cry of violence that we are carrying in us and we are expressing this outwards into the world and this cry this violence this journey over our life also goes through many situations many experiences which build insecurity in us which build fear in us fear of this or that insecurities of all kinds all these insecurities and fears how do we deal with them we try to change them we try to address them but if we cannot address them if we cannot face them we try to protect ourselves from ourselves and from others and in that protection in that response to actually protecting the fears protecting the insecurities and not letting anybody else to see how much fear how much insecurity we are carrying in ourselves we become violent to others so this route of violence that we have for others and even for ourselves all the burden of what we do to ourselves is rooted in the fear in the insecurities that we have and we being unable to move to approve those and put them away if we cannot approve them we try to hide them we try to protect them we try to bury them in our subconscious in our unconscious and thereby resulting in being violent to ourselves violent to our body violent to our mind violent to other people's body violent to other people's mind and there is this expression which we call us violence all over the world ask yourself is this bringing any peace is this war bringing any peace is this violence bringing us anywhere positive in life anywhere where we all collectively as humanity want to be we all know the answer but we do not act upon it because we do not know how to get rid of this violence see that this violence that we do to ourselves this violence that we do to our body to our mind is also because we do not understand our true nature deep down there is an intuition that we are more than the body we are more than the mind but in our conscious living we are confined to the body confined to the mind so there is a conflict and that conflict how are we responding to that conflict by violence we put ourselves into violence our body into violence our mind into violence because we do not know how to expand beyond the body beyond the mind if we were to know how to be beyond the body how to be beyond the mind we would also know how to be with the body how to be with the mind once that consciousness which is the master of the body and the mind is set into its place is put back on the throne then the body also cannot give any trouble mind cannot also give any trouble they are also in their place and the relationship of you with your own body with your own mind is peaceful is non-violent this is what Patanjali says in the presence of one firmly established in non-violence all hostilities cease I have to bring an example from what what we see out there in the world from once again the area of sports sports from boxing one of my favorite boxers and probably yours as well Mike Tyson he said there is a comeback he's coming back he's training again and he's going to fight once again in November is I think 54 years old so to get back into shape to get back into the sports he's training if you observe his life if you listen to him that man is the most intelligent man that I've ever seen in in sports but at the same time the most sufferer he has been suffering his insecurities his fears that he while he was child and the kind of bringing up that he had he is still suffering and fighting that if you see his his movement in a match if you see him in action he is acting out of violence he is acting out of that insecurity in himself he his technique is is great is amazing but it has not yet reached to a technique of Bruce Lee as an example which is to move from violence to non-violence just see I'm bringing two greatest fighters Mike Tyson and Bruce Lee as examples of both at the pinnacle of their art of fighting but one is fighting out of violence and the other one is fighting out of non-violence both display their perfection you can see when Bruce Lee is fighting he's not fighting himself he's not fighting the other when Tyson is fighting he's fighting himself he's fighting the other so the reason why I bring this up if there was a message from Patanjali to Mike Tyson in his new revival in his new comeback and fighting once again if he can learn the lesson of Ahimsa if he can learn the art of fighting without fighting he will leave this world with being not only the greatest boxer but the greatest fighter again becoming the symbol of the art of fighting without fighting for us let us come back to our silence to our meditation and in this session give ourselves a chance to not fight with oneself with our body with our mind not being violent and establishing that non-violence in ourselves by allowing the consciousness to expand beyond the body beyond the mind to allow the understanding of wisdom to settle in us to allow us to address the insecurity the fears that we carry in us which result in all this mess let us close our eyes take a posture that is comfortable take a nice deep breath inhale from the nose and exhale from the nose allowing the mind your body to settle with its own weight allowing the mind to also settle in this moment giving you a chance to turn inwards for your awareness to turn towards your inner space give yourself few minutes to establish peace with your body observe your relationship with your body see if there is any conflict any fight and let your body be at rest let your relationship to your body be non-violent Ahimsa with every breath more awareness of your relationship with your body and settling it in peace non-violence silence silence as your body finds ease in you having no conflict no fight with your body include your awareness also your mind in your awareness stop trying to fight with your mind if it has its thoughts sensations movements let it be be kind to your mind be non-violent to your mind silence silence silence this awareness one feeling being non-violent to your body being non-violent to your mind drop your weapons give yourself rest silence silence the body is not a limitation it is your expression the mind is not a limitation it is your expression the body is not a limitation it is your expression the mind is not a limitation it is your expression allow this awareness to expand beyond the body beyond the mind the body is here the mind is here in peace and your awareness your consciousness expands into the formless into the shapeless into the boundless into emptiness silence rest into the boundless shapeless formless emptiness from the form to the formless everything is at peace non-violent to each other all expressions all realms of your existence are at peace in harmony in non-violence with each other silence silence gently draw your attention back to your body back to your mind with a new relationship of peace non-violence and harmony very gently and slowly you may open your eyes with me maintaining the state of peace harmony and non-violence remaining established in ahimsa in non-violence here and in the rest of your day the rest of your life please pass on this message of ahimsa of non-violence to your friends and your family and bring peace for everyone namaste
