Listen to Ektaji talk about Nisargadatta Maharaj's book I Am That. Nisargadatta Maharaj was a teacher who did not propound any ideology or religion, but gently unwrapped the mystery of the self. I Am That preserves his dialogs with the followers who came from around the world seeking guidance in destroying false identities.

Questioner,

Can you influence the world by your attitude?

By separating yourself from the world,

You lose all hope of helping it.

Maharaj says,

How can it be?

All is myself.

Means my entire projection is me only.

Can't I help myself?

I do not identify myself with anybody in particular,

For I am all,

Both the particular and the universal.

You get it?

He does not identify with that body-mind sitting over there,

Labelled as Mr.

Gadatta Maharaj.

That is the particular.

He does not identify himself with that.

He identifies with the entire projection,

Whatever is.

I am all,

He says.

Yes,

He does not have any problem with being the universal.

So when there is no issue with being the universal,

He says,

How can I not help myself?

This is me.

This is not me.

This is me.

You see that?

All of it is me.

Can you then help me,

The particular person?

Maharaj says,

But I do help you always from within.

Myself and yourself are one.

I know it,

But you don't.

That is all the difference.

And that difference cannot last.

The questioner says,

How do you help the entire world?

Maharaj says,

Gandhi is dead,

Yet his mind pervades the earth.

He is talking about Mahatma Gandhi.

The thought of a Jnani pervades humanity and works ceaselessly for good.

Today,

Maharaj is no more,

Yet his word is here.

Are you seeing this?

So the thought of a Jnani pervades humanity and works ceaselessly for good.

Being anonymous,

Coming from within,

It is the more powerful and compelling.

What is he talking about?

The Jnani's thought that pervades the universe.

That is how the world improves.

The inner aiding and blessing the outer.

Means the inner is helping the outer or blessing the outer.

So where is the Guru?

Inside.

Very clear?

Not outside,

Not sitting on a chair in front of you,

But inside,

Internally.

When a Jnani dies,

He is no more,

In the same sense in which a river is no more,

When it merges in the sea.

The name,

The shape are no more,

But the water remains and becomes one with the ocean.

When a Jnani joins the universal mind,

All his goodness and wisdom become the heritage of humanity and uplift every human being.

Very clear?

Maharaj's word is helping us even now.

The heritage of humanity.

Questioner says,

We are attached to our personality,

Our individuality,

Our being.

Unlike others,

We value very much.

You seem to denounce both as useless.

You are unmanifested of what use is it to us.

Basically,

Maharaj considers his body-mind also useless and your body-mind also useless.

He considers himself as avyakta.

So the questioner is saying,

Of what use is your avyakta,

Unmanifest to us?

Maharaj says,

Unmanifested,

Manifested,

Individuality,

Personality,

Nirguna,

Saguna,

Vyakta and vyakti.

These are the four Sanskrit words.

All these are mere words,

Points of view,

Mental attitudes.

There is no reality in them.

The real is experienced in silence.

You cling to personality,

But you are conscious of being a person only when you are in trouble.

When you are not in trouble,

You do not think of yourself.

You think this is all mere words,

Vyakta,

Vyakti,

Avyakta.

All these nirguna,

Saguna that you get lost in,

All words,

All words.

Even your so-called personality,

I am a person,

This ego,

This resistance,

This I am a person,

This is also nothing.

You are not always conscious,

I am a person.

Do you recognize this?

Only when you are in trouble,

Somebody challenges you,

Pokes your ego,

Then you become,

I am the person.

Stand tall,

Ego standing tall.

How dare you say this to me?

Till that time,

Where was this person?

That is what he means.

Only when you are in trouble,

Then I am the person comes up.

Otherwise,

There is nothing like that.

Just a mere idea,

Just a mere idea.

This is the truth.

We work on this in the higher gurukul classes.

That I am not this person.

So many times,

I'm watching a movie,

Two hours,

I've forgotten I'm here.

I feel I'm there.

I'm crying with the heroine,

I'm running with the hero,

I'm doing this action,

That thing.

I've completely forgotten I am here.

Movie over,

Suddenly,

Oh,

Oh,

My knee hurts.

Two hours,

There was no knee,

There was no hurt,

There was no person.

Right?

I'm just giving you a simple example that you can all relate to.

But this happens so many times.

You're driving the car,

It's automatically happening.

You are lost in thoughts.

There is no idea of person driving the car.

Suddenly,

A dog runs in front of your car and you have to brake.

You're in trouble.

Suddenly,

I am the person.

Have you realized this?

Only when you're in trouble,

There is the recognition of I am the person.

Reality is what?

That there is only a flow.

The flow is running according to a pre-coded program.

There is no person.

There is no person.

Otherwise,

You would have this recognition constantly,

24-7.

But you don't.

What happens at the end of waking state and beginning of dream?

Where is the person?

You should know that you are lying in bed throughout the night.

Do you know?

What happens?

Somebody screams in the house in the middle of the night.

You're in trouble.

Then what happens?

You wake up and you become the person.

Are you seeing this?

Only when you are in trouble,

You are the person.

Amazing,

No?

Maharaj is to be able to see at this astute level.

That's what he's encouraging you to do.

Dive,

Dive into the truth.

Dive into self-exploration.

Questioner says,

Okay,

I get it.

But you did not tell me the uses of the unmanifested.

He's stuck on his question.

Maharaj says,

Surely you must sleep in order to wake up.

You must die in order to live.

You must melt down to shape anew.

You must destroy to build.

Annihilate before creation.

The supreme is the universal solvent.

It corrodes every container.

It burns through every obstacle.

Without the absolute denial of everything,

The tyranny of things would be absolute.

The supreme is the great harmonizer.

The guarantee of the ultimate and perfect balance of life in freedom.

It dissolves you and thus reasserts your true being.

The gap of nothingness is in every arising.

Not just thought,

In perception,

In sensation,

In feeling,

As well as thought.

That gap of nothingness,

Everything disappears into the unmanifest and then re-emerges from the unmanifest.

That is what he's saying.

When everything dies into it and re-emerges out of it,

It's like dying and being born alive,

Coming out alive again.

Again dying,

Again coming out and being born again.

Questioner says,

It is all well on its own level.

But how does it work in daily life?

Maharaj says,

The daily life is a life of action.

Whether you like it or not,

You must function.

Whatever you do for your own sake accumulates and becomes explosive.

One day it goes off and plays havoc with you and your world.

When you deceive yourself that you work for the good of all,

It makes matters worse.

For you should not be guided by your own ideas of what is good for others.

A man who claims to know what is good for others is dangerous.

He says,

Whenever you work for yourself,

Anything that you do for myself,

I want this for myself,

I want that for myself,

I want name,

Fame,

Money.

Yeah,

So you say whatever you do for your own sake,

It accumulates,

Accumulates,

Accumulates,

Accumulates.

It becomes like gunpowder accumulating.

And one day it becomes explosive and creates havoc in your life.

Why?

Because you were only working for yourself.

Means vasana,

Working out of desire.

That is why there is suffering.

That is why there is bad financial hardship suddenly after so many years of working.

Suddenly there is a major disease after so many years of working.

There is some major family Mahabharata that happens after so many years.

Because all these years that you were just accumulating,

Accumulating for your own self,

For your own selfish means.

So,

This accumulation becomes like gunpowder.

And one day it explodes,

It creates havoc.

So,

This is the first thing.

The second thing he says,

Even if you think that you are working for the good of others,

In that process you are really trying to be the boss,

Take the authority,

Be the doer.

I am doing for the good of others.

Who are you to decide the good of others?

Everything is working on its own automatic program.

Who are you to change the program?

Then also the same explosion will happen.

So,

The somebody who thinks I am working for the good of others is dangerous.

The big warning against a spiritual shopkeeper who says,

I want to put a smile on all the faces.

Oh,

You have that power?

Really?

We worry of the spiritual shopkeeper also.

You yourself don't go that way.

Why do you do seva?

Why do you do service?

If you say for the good of others,

Again you are doing something wrong.

I am so good,

See,

That is hidden behind your words,

I am doing for the good of others.

Are you seeing this?

Ask Maharaj,

Why are you teaching?

You come and sit in my house,

What do I do?

No option.

I will tell you like that on your face.

Do I have an option?

Okay,

You are asking,

This is the flow,

I don't jump into the flow and get attracted to it,

Neither do I resist it.

Okay,

Ask,

I will tell you.

This is the flow,

This is the flow.

I pointed out that.

Do you see the authority you give me by putting me on this chair?

You put me on the chair.

I didn't come and sit here.

It should be the flow that propels you.

Like I was pushed to do this,

Pulled,

I was pulled by the flow,

I was cornered,

I didn't have a way to get out of it.

Okay,

Somebody asked,

Okay,

I tell,

That's the way.

Neither jumping in and grabbing,

Nor pushing anything away,

With no intention to change what is.

You think I'm helping you?

In any way,

Did I ever tell you I'm helping you?

No,

Forget that whole idea of I am helping others.

Behind that is your ego saying,

See,

I'm a good person.

See,

You appreciate me.

You confirm my existence.

You validate,

I am a good person.

Have you seen this?

It's actually self-service.

It's not for others.

Would you do the same thing if you were on Mars?

If there were no others,

Nobody to watch you,

Nobody to appreciate you,

Would you still do the same service?

Okay,

That is the question to ask yourself.

You're still identifying with this.

You're still identifying with this.

I am doing good for others.

That means I am this.

Have you seen this?

Very,

Very clear.

How is one to work then?

He's asking your question.

Maharaj says,

Neither for yourself nor for others,

But for the work's own sake.

Do you get it?

The flow brought this work into my plate.

Okay,

I just complete it.

Like that only.

In office,

Something comes your way.

No resistance and no jumping in.

At home,

A family member asks something.

Some demand comes your way.

No resistance,

No jumping in.

Treat it like work.

It came my way.

I have to do it.

Finish.

It's the flow.

Get it?

For the sake of the flow.

A thing worth doing is its own purpose and meaning.

Make nothing a means to something else.

Bind not.

Very beautiful,

That is.

Highlight that.

Why do you do office work?

Tell me.

What is your bondage?

Why do you do office work?

Why do you go to offices?

So you have bound money with work.

And then you see,

When the salary in the market is going up,

But your salary is not going up,

You have bound your work.

No,

Okay.

He doesn't increase my salary.

I'm also going to work.

Increase my salary.

I'm also going to work less.

And there,

Suffering begins.

Why?

Because you have bound your office work with the money that your boss is paying.

Are you seeing this?

I'll give a very simple example which will apply to everybody.

This is what bondage does.

Similarly,

In relationships you have now.

Keep the ego aside and attempt to see it.

In relationships,

You give that much how much the other person is ready to give back.

You have bound your love also by trade.

You are angry and mean with me.

I'm also not going to be nice to you.

Are you seeing this?

Right.

So this is where binding happens.

Do not bind the flow.

Do not bind the flow.

Every moment new.

Even if that family member was mean to you in the previous now,

In this now,

I am new.

This now,

I am new.

And whatever comes,

Whatever the situation comes in the next now with that family member,

Completely wholeheartedly there.

Not binding it to the previous moment's anger,

The previous now's argument,

Whatever happened.

To the flow,

I give myself wholeheartedly now,

Now,

Now,

Letting go of the past,

Letting go.

What holds on to the past?

Ego.

And ego says,

No,

No,

You got only so much.

You give only so much.

Right.

This is called binding.

Bondage brings suffering.

This now,

I am new.

This now,

I am new.

I welcome the flow the way it is.

Treat every now with respect,

With honor.

This now,

This now,

This now.

Complete attention,

Wholeheartedly.

That's why Saint Kabir says,

Let them cheat you.

I will not cheat them.

This is where he comes from.

As the flow,

Whatever it brings to me,

It is bringing to me that which I have projected.

Which means what?

It is a lesson for me only.

I have projected it.

It's a lesson for me.

Now,

Do I want to take this lesson and be the witness,

The new blossomed one,

Or I do want to continue with the same suffering of the past?

It's in my hand.

Yes,

I don't do trade,

Business.

Like,

You know how we do with God also?

You give me so much happiness,

Then I'll come and give you 10 laddus.

As if God is going to die without your 10 laddus.

You need to do business with God also.

You are binding things.

The flow is beautiful.

Respect the flow.

So,

Make nothing a means to something else.

Bind not.

You understood,

No?

You know what that means?

God does not create one thing to serve another.

Each is made for its own sake.

Because it is made for itself,

It does not interfere.

You are using things and people for purposes alien to them and you play havoc with the world and yourself.

So,

Be very careful in your relationships.

Be careful,

Very careful.

You don't use people,

Even for business.

Suppose you're a businessman.

A businessman also looks at his money.

But see that you are earning money in the most honest way.

Even if it is less money,

It should be pure.

It should not come by fleecing another,

By.

.

.

It should not come by fleecing another,

By doing something wrong to somebody else.

Don't make one the means of something else.

Very,

Very clear?

Questioner,

Our real being is all the time with us,

You say.

How is it that we do not notice it?

Maharaj says,

Yes,

You are always the supreme.

But your attention is fixed on things,

Physical or mental.

When your attention is off a thing and not yet fixed on another,

In the interval,

You are pure being.

Do you know what he's talking about?

The gap of no-things between perception,

Sensation,

Thoughts and feelings.

When through the practice of discrimination and detachment,

Viveka-vairagya,

You lose sight of sensory and mental states,

Pure being emerges as the natural state.

Highlight this part,

The natural state.

The natural state is the natural samadhi.

You will study it in the higher scriptures when we do sahaja samadhi.

Natural state is sahaja samadhi.

When through the practice of viveka-vairagya,

You lose sight of the sensory and mental states,

Pure being emerges as the natural state.

So remember,

Viveka and vairagya is the key.

Viveka,

Discrimination,

Removing the illusion and just being with the real.

So whatever attachments are coming up,

Whatever memories are coming up,

Removing all the mind stories,

All the lies,

And just being with the real.

At the end,

You'll be left with nothing,

No story.

And that will relieve you from that tiger,

From that butterfly completely.

You will be free.

When you are free,

What happens?

The force of trouble is gone.

And then what are you left with?

Do you recognize the nothingness of the now?

When the tiger completely collapses,

There's the sense of relief because of the recognition of the nothingness of the now.

The absence of that something called the tiger and the whole drama that the tiger brought your way.

Everything collapses.

Yes,

The light feeling means what?

Yes,

That nothingness,

That nothingness.

So attempt to recognize that.

That is the natural state.

It is because of the dissolution of the physical and the mental state associated with that particular attachment.

Yes,

So attempt to see what Maharaj is saying.

How does one bring to an end this sense of separateness?

Maharaj says,

By focusing the mind on I am,

On the sense of being,

I am so and so dissolves.

Got it?

When you focus inwards on the witness,

On the sense of I am,

The so and so dissolves.

This and that dissolves.

I'm a person.

I'm doing this.

This is my favorite hobby.

This I like to do.

This I don't like to do.

So and so.

Got it?

This and that.

That dissolves when I focus inwards.

What you did in the first Samadhi practice today.

Focus inwards on the consciousness.

Then the so and so dissolves.

I am a witness only remains and that too submerges in I am all.

Then the all becomes the one and the one yourself.

Not to be separate from me.

Abandon the idea of a separate I and the question of whose experience will not arise.

I like this.

Abandon the idea of a separate I and the question of whose experience will not arise.

We did that in today's self-exploration.

I am not I.

So you repeat that on your own and get to this recognition.

What is Maharaj saying?

Abandon the idea of a separate I and the question of whose experience will not arise.

I.

Questioner says you speak from your own experience.

How can I make it mine?

Maharaj says you speak of my experience as different from your experience because you believe we are separate.

But we are not.

On a deeper level my experience is your experience.

Dive deep within yourself.

And you will find it easily and simply.

And the hint is go in the direction of I am.

Go in the direction of I am.

There is no separation.

There is no separation.

You have to just see the truth.

There is no duality.

No two.
