Listen to Ektaji guide us through a self-exploration meditation, "The Inseparability of Being and Becoming” from Chapter 27 of Nisargadatta Maharaj’s book ‘I Am That’. Witnessing is an experience that appears as duality. As the Witness dissolves, only motionless Nothingness remains i.e. Atma Ram, true rest. From Nothingness, the “I” arises, plays as Becoming, and melts back into its source. Like Dream and Dreamer, Knowledge and Knower, Becoming is never apart from Being. Dissolve into Silence, in the bliss of inseparable Oneness.

Let's do a self-inquiry meditation on the inseparability of being and becoming.

Becoming is an apparent duality.

Attempt to recognize the illusory blossoming from being to becoming.

Let's look at this illusory blossoming step by step.

Allow the eyes of the waker to close.

Relax as the witness of the waker.

Allow the witness to collapse into the motionless oneness.

Remember that witnessing is duality because witnessing is an experience itself.

There is the seer and the seen.

The seer is witnessing the seen.

This is an experience itself.

Hence,

Witnessing is duality.

All experience is simply a dual state.

Let the duality dissolve.

All divisions are in the chitta.

Go beyond.

Allow the witness to dissolve.

Dissolve into the motionless oneness.

Only in the motionless oneness lies the bliss of non-duality because there is no division there.

The peace of non-duality is what the seekers of wisdom yearn for.

The motionless unmanifest speaks only in silence.

Beyond words.

Beyond opposites.

Beyond the mind.

Beyond all experience.

That is true rest,

Atmaram.

The nirguna or unmanifest beingness cannot be experienced like an object.

Allow the witness to collapse because the witness cannot know it like an object.

You can only be it.

You cannot experience it.

Allow the witness to collapse.

Freedom from experience is true rest,

Atmaram.

Notice the restlessness of the witness.

Remind it.

Be nothing.

See the world as nothing.

Nothingness cannot be an experience.

Hence it is inexplainable in words.

Nothingness is not a state of mind.

Hence it cannot be dragged down to the level of experience.

Dear witness,

Drop the effort to experience.

Nothingness is the ground of experience.

It is the actuality of experience.

But it is not of the nature of experience.

Because experience pretends to be somethingness.

While nothingness is comfortable with its nothingness.

Be nothing.

Notice that the I pops up repeatedly in an attempt to understand the self-inquiry words.

The I pops up from nothingness but pretends to be somethingness.

Remind the I that the nothingness is beginningless.

There is no point in it which you can call as the beginning.

There is no point in nothingness that can be called as the end.

That which is born of the beginningless and endless must be beginningless and endless itself.

The I that keeps popping up from this beginningless and endless dissolves back into this beginningless and endless.

The I itself is beginningless and endless.

The beginningless begins forever.

Even though the I is a false becoming,

It is not separate from the truth of the being of nothingness.

Just like the dream is not separate from the dreamer.

Just like knowledge is not different from the knower.

Similarly,

Becoming is inseparable from being.

The undisturbed state of being is bliss,

Ananda,

Equanimous peace.

The disturbed state of being is the appearance of the I and its world.

Being reflects as becoming.

The reflection and the reflected are not two.

Being and becoming are inseparable.

Your swaroopa is beyond words and beyond the absence of words.

Beyond knowing and beyond not knowing.

Beyond past and beyond future.

Beyond I am,

Beyond I am not.

Dear witness,

Please quit all self-descriptions and dissolve,

Collapse.

Only in non-duality is there bliss.

Bliss is not to be known.

I am always bliss but never blissful because bliss is not a quality.

It is my own nature.

Dissolve,

My dear witness,

Dissolve.

Only in complete dissolution arises the realization that becoming and being are inseparable.

Becoming and being are inseparable.

Becoming and being are inseparable.
