Welcome to the Best Life University podcast.

I'm Dr.

Lynne Brown,

A counselor and educator.

In this podcast,

I discuss a myriad of topics related to the five dimensions of personal growth,

Mental,

Social,

Spiritual,

Emotional,

And physical.

Thank you so much for listening.

Today's topic is the five dimensions of personal growth,

Part two.

Last time,

I introduced you to the idea of mental development and discuss the first two of the eight conflicts each of us deals with that function as turning points or opportunities for mental development.

Today I'm going to be talking about three more.

First,

Initiative versus guilt.

During the ages of three and five,

Development is focused on acquiring a sense of self-initiative.

If we are discouraged from engaging in self-directed play,

We can begin to feel a sense of guilt when being self-directed.

Those who are encouraged to run their own lives,

Obviously within reason,

Leave this stage with a strong sense of initiative.

Second,

Industry versus inferiority.

We begin developing the opportunity for a sense of pride and accomplishment between the ages of six and 11.

If we are not praised and encouraged,

We are left with a sense of inferiority.

Those of us who are praised and encouraged develop a sense of confidence.

Third,

Identity versus confusion.

During adolescence,

The formation of a personal identity becomes critical.

This is done by exploring various behaviors,

Roles,

And identities.

This stage is deemed critical because it is believed that it provides a basis for determining our life direction.

If we are not allowed and encouraged to explore during this time,

Feeling lost,

Insecure,

And unsure of our place in the world can be the result.

So if we are able to embrace this stage,

The outcome is a sense of identity that allows us to feel independent,

Secure,

And capable of walking into our future.
