Hello and welcome to Five Minutes in Nature with me Liz Scott and you join me on the quay in Exeter right beside the River Axe.

It's a really beautiful morning,

Quite cool at the moment but it's going to be a scorcher and you can probably hear people running,

Going by.

There's a man picking up litter in his yellow top.

There was a big aeroplane went overhead a minute ago so we might get another aeroplane.

Oh people are opening up their premises for coffees and teas and yeah it's just a lovely,

Everything is fresh and people getting ready for the day ahead.

And today I want to talk about something that I think is just helpful to understand and often when I talk about my,

I'm quite happy talking about my unsettled thoughts and feelings and thought loops and insecurities and there are times when people approach me and say well have you thought about doing this to get rid of those thoughts and feelings?

And I forget that for many people there is a sense that if you have an uncomfortable thought or feeling or unsettled thought feeling then the most important thing is to try and get rid of it.

And certainly that was my,

You know the way I thought about things as well when I trained as a counsellor and then I trained as a coach and I trained as a neurolinguistics programming.

I think I had a master's in that sort of,

It was I think maybe a two-year training programme,

I can't remember now.

But I did all these things and a myriad of other things as well because I really thought that uncomfortable thoughts and feelings were things you needed to get rid of.

Like it was almost like a space invader,

I'm showing my age now,

But space invaders it was a computer game and you had to zap the space crafts coming from the top of your screen,

You had to zap them and it felt like that with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings is I needed to get rid of them,

Like zap them.

But when I came across the Inside Out Understanding also known as the Three Principles and I've got a course,

An introduction to the Three Principles on Insight Timer if you want to take a look.

When I came across this everything changed and I'm going to talk about the change so that you can get a sense of it in tomorrow's lesson as well.

But I just want to just set the scene really today and I remember in the early days when I came across the Inside Out Understanding and it was called the Three Principles when I came across it,

That was its most common name.

I remember meeting up with somebody who was a bit further along the line of learning about the Three Principles and bear in mind I used to train in any single modality I could,

I used to love all the training,

Everything,

NLP,

Hypnotism,

I did mediation,

Oh I mean I learned about spiral dynamics and dabbled in transactional analysis,

I just loved it all,

I really,

Really,

Really loved it,

All of it and I'm not dismissing any of it,

For me it was part of my journey.

But I had this conversation with this friend of mine who was just a little bit further along the line with the Three Principles and I remember her saying something to me that really floored me because I was asking a question to her about the Three Principles and then my comment was yes and I suppose it's really helpful if you use that in conjunction with and I don't remember what I said now but I suggested a particular technique and what she said just floored me and I still remember to this day and she said no you don't need any techniques or tools with the Three Principles and it was like what?

That completely confounded everything I had been learning and had been taught and thought that I needed as I went on my journey as a coach,

It completely discombobulated me,

Confounded me,

What do you mean I don't need any tools and techniques?

Of course you need a tool or technique to get somewhere,

That's the whole point of it surely.

But you see there was a something more powerful than a tool or technique,

I'm going to talk more about that tomorrow,

So what is it if you haven't got a tool or technique what is it that we're looking at?

And I mean I'll give you a little taster now but the ultimate thing is that if you have an understanding of how life works then it doesn't matter what thoughts and feelings you have because you just understand them,

You don't need to get rid of them anymore,

You don't need to try and control them,

It's the understanding in an understanding of how we actually work there is extraordinary freedom.

So I'm going to talk more about this understanding tomorrow and like I say if you're interested in the Three Principles you might enjoy my introduction to the Three Principles course.
