This session sets the landscape for the course, introducing the concept of gratitude from both an intellectual and embodied view. We enter the gratitude journey through the metaphor of a garden, where we identify what we wish to harvest in our lives. We share research regarding the benefits of gratitude to help identify what we are cultivating. We close with an introductory guided practice to begin to experience gratitude in the heart.

Lesson 2
Tilling the Soil: What is Gratitude?
In this session we delve deeper into understanding what gratitude is in the context of emotions as well as a skill and trait that can be developed. We till the soil of our gratitude garden by understanding the brain’s autopilot tendencies and exploring the ways in which gratitude opens us to connection and meaning in the world around us. We will explore gratitude in the body through a guided sensing practice.

Lesson 3
Survey Your Gratitude Landscape: Looking at Relationships
How does gratitude show up in our relationships? In this session, we survey the relational landscape of gratitude by exploring how gratitude differentiates from reciprocity and obligation. We learn how to challenge the tendency of the mind to view ourselves as separate from others, revealing the gifts that are already available to us throughout the span of our relational landscape. We explore how gratitude is influenced by both our relationship to our environment and to others with an experiential practice.

Lesson 4
Your Garden’s Natural Predators: Obstacles to Gratitude
What are the greatest obstacles to the cultivation of gratitude? In this session we identify and explore the common obstacles and hindrances to the cultivation of gratitude in our lives. We explore the role of the Mind and thoughts as the “natural predators” in our gratitude garden. Included is a guided practice to foster awareness of our internal experience of gratitude and how our body communicates the presence of such obstacles in our garden.

Lesson 5
Planting Your Seeds: Gratitude Practices
In this session we delve deeply into practice, planting gratitude seeds in day-to-day experiences. We identify four seed practices to develop and cultivate gratitude that can be woven into any day. These practices enable us to shift from the negativity bias of the mind into an open space of connection and abundance. We close with a guided practice to further deepen the experience and understanding of gratitude.

Lesson 6
Watering Your Seeds: Self-Nurturance as Gratitude
What is the value of having appreciation for your Self? In this session we explore gratitude as preventative medicine, deep self-care, and self-love. We learn more about opening up to gratitude within ourselves so we can more actively and authentically participate in the cycle of giving and receiving in the world. We close with a guided practice to increase gratitude through connection with the Self and the body.

Lesson 7
Gardening through a Storm: Gratitude in Difficult Times
How do we find gratitude when things are shattered and falling apart? In this session we learn how to continue cultivating our gratitude garden during the hazards of stormy weather and learn how to access gratitude in challenging times. We explore the link between gratitude and vulnerability. The session closes with a guided practice to tap into gratitude as a resource to overcome even the darkest moments.

Your Garden Tools: Working with the Mind
In this session we go deeper into an exploration of the role of the mind in the cultivation of gratitude and sharpen our garden tools. We identify and practice specific strategies for working with the mental hindrances and negative automatic thought patterns. We learn how to shift from a place of obstacles and scarcity to one of flow and abundance.

Sharing Your Bouquet: Expressing Gratitude
Sir William Arthur Ward stated that feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. In this session we revisit our gratitude landscape to go deeper into our relationships, and learn how to express gratitude in the world. We explore ways to optimize the expression and communication of gratitude to enhance relationships and personal well-being. The session closes with a guided exploration of communicating of gratitude.

Abundant Gratitude Harvest: Integration
In this session, we take a take in the abundance that you’ve cultivated through this gratitude journey and reap the harvest of your practices. We explore the principles of habit evolution and how to continue to deepen your cultivation beyond the frame of this course. We close with a guided practice to survey the new terrain of your gratitude landscape.
