The Art Of Having Amazing Conversations

With Hans van Veen

Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche said, "Enlightenment is an accident, but meditation makes you more accident-prone". It's a bit the same with amazing conversations. Have you ever had those conversations, where you still remember 10 years later how amazing that connection was? We all get some of those in our lives, but some of us get more than others, and there might be a reason. Join me on this course as we raise awareness to craft deep, honest, connecting, fun, and unforgettable dialogues. image: Getty

Lesson 1

The Check-In

The more your needs are met the less likely you'll be to have resentment, and the more likely it is that you'll be open and curious. A check-in is a perfect practice to get in contact with our needs and express our requests for the moon, that'll help us to relax, dive deep, and have an amazing conversation.

Lesson 2

Attuning To Life

Us humans have sung to each other for millions of years more than we have used words to speak to each other. So attuning to voice, breathing, and body language, is our innate way of relating. This session discusses how we can employ those ancient skills in our everyday conversations.

Lesson 3

How To Listen

A course about conversations is incomplete without paying some attention to listening. How actually can we listen well? How to listen actively without interrupting somebody's flow? That's what we'll explore in this session.

Lesson 4

Truth, Beauty, Goodness

In this session, I will import 2 valuable lessons from the 'Aletheia' coaching method: (1) the value of knowing where somebody is in their self-identification, and (2) the beneficial effect of accepting presence. Both of these are incredibly insightful tools and can help us to attune more skillfully in our conversations.

Lesson 5

The Talking Stick

In a conversation, we can be either in self-connection, in expression, or in listening mode. The switches between these often happen unconsciously, and can quickly result in a very subtle kind of competition for attention. This is where the 'talking stick' comes in handy. It's the important intention to be aware of a switch between listening and expressing.

Lesson 6

Generous Counterfactual Anticipation

We all know that it's useful & kind to give somebody the benefit of the doubt. But what does this mean? In this session, I'll use a very insightful text by Dutch philosopher Theo de Boer about this specific topic called 'counterfactual anticipation' and 'the postulates of the dialogue'.

Lesson 7

The First Gate

What does it mean to be honest? And how can we be fully honest, without revealing things that we don't feel safe yet to reveal? In this session, I explain how to approach this, using the awareness of the 'First Gate'.

Lesson 8

Befriending Awkward Silences

If we're going to talk about the art of conversation, we have to talk about awkward silences. In this session, I'm going to show you how and why we can befriend those silences, to make our dialogues a lot more powerful.

Lesson 9

Sprinkles On Top

Now that we've looked for eight sessions into all kinds of conversational attunements that we can be aware of, in this last session I want to offer you some very concrete practices, games, and creativities that you can employ to enliven your conversations even more.

Great course, very well organized and through through. Much deeper than just have a few tips on having a great conversation. Incorporates a lot of practical guidance and non-dual and spiritual wisdom. Hans has a very grounded, calming, and warm presence which made the course all the more enjoyable and inspiring! Also, lots of great unique quotes!

I appreciated the range of content shared in this course and the heightened awareness I now have for various conversational techniques. Providing the information in short doses each day was helpful in trying to absorb it. The content is well narrated and I found myself looking forward to the quotes chosen for each session. Thank you for the thoughtfulness given to sharing your knowledge, Hans.
