When life feels heavy or uncertain, joy might seem out of reach—or even inappropriate. But in this gently guided meditation, you’ll discover that joy isn’t just a fleeting emotion. It’s a quiet inner strength, a sacred calling that can steady you, even when your body or mind feel weighed down. With soft breath cues and grounding imagery, you’ll be invited to release the pressure to “fix” your mood and instead reconnect with the joy that lives beneath the surface. No forcing. No pretending. Just a return to what’s always been yours to hold. Come as you are. Let your soul rest. And let the soft light of joy rise within you.

Joy as a Calling Begin by finding a comfortable seated position.

Let your spine rise naturally and your shoulders soften.

Allow your hands to rest gently in your lap or by your sides.

If it feels right,

Close your eyes.

Begin to slow your breath.

Let the rhythm of your inhale and exhale guide you inward.

Take a few more gentle breaths.

Inhale.

Inhale.

Let yourself settle into the safety of this moment.

There's nowhere else to be.

Nothing else to do.

Just breathe.

Just be.

As you breathe,

Focus on the simple truth.

Joy is not a reaction.

It is a calling.

A whisper that reaches through the noise.

A quiet invitation to rise.

Let that truth rest in your heart.

Joy is not a denial of difficulty.

It's not a mask for sorrow.

Joy is a way forward.

A light you can walk toward even when the path feels dim.

The soul holds its own song.

It does not temper its joy to match your mood.

Inhale gently into the space of your heart.

Exhale into the warmth of your being.

Even if your body feels weighed down,

Your soul is still a light.

When you walk in the direction of joy,

Even softly,

Even quietly,

You awaken something sacred inside.

Let yourself breathe into that space.

There is no need to force it.

Joy doesn't need to be loud.

It doesn't need to be bright.

But it is steady.

Inhale into that steadiness.

Exhale into its calm.

You may have been taught that only heavy hearts are wise.

That to feel burdened is to be deep.

But true wisdom lives side by side with joy.

Not the joy that performs,

But the joy that abides.

A deep,

Clear,

Rooted joy.

One that lives through you even when the winds are strong.

There is beauty in this kind of joy.

A beauty to be written about,

Sung about,

Shared.

You are allowed to feel it,

Even now,

Especially now.

Let yourself rest in that truth.

Slowly begin to notice your breath again.

Feel your feet,

Your hands,

Your body supported by the ground beneath you.

When you are ready,

Gently open your eyes.

Let this joy remain with you.

Not as something you chase,

But as something you carry.

Namaste.

Once again, this meditation offers me a lot more than I’ve taken in over a few listenings. I think I need to grow into this type of joy that seems to include hope. And, it’s a realistic joy, and hope. The closest thing I have found is this poem: "We must risk delight," he wrote. "We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world." - Jack Gilbert, poet Julie, thank you for your inspiring meditations and work.
