Angela Hryniuk gently guides you in cultivating compassion through a Buddhist practice called Tong Lin - Giving and Taking. This meditation explores empathy in three parts: compassion towards someone we love, someone who is neutral to us, and someone we may have difficulty with. Through fostering a heart-centered presence we deepen our understanding of how all humans suffer. This practice is excellent also if you wish to help someone with a physical illness.

I now want you to bring in to your mind,

Sitting in front of you,

Someone you deeply love,

You respect,

Or you cherish.

I want you to imagine them sitting in front of you now,

And I want you to send them this beautiful white light from your being to theirs.

And on your in-breath,

I want you to breathe in their pain or hardship that they may be experiencing,

Ingesting any difficulty that they may be having,

And exhaling out white light.

You can imagine them inhaling goodness and exhaling out smoke.

And you will breathe in their smoke,

Their negativity,

Their pain,

And you will breathe out this white light.

Breathing in their pain,

You are able to hold it in your light.

You are able to transform it through this light,

And you will breathe into them the white light.

They in turn ingest this goodness and exhale out their pain.

Next I want you to imagine sitting in front of you,

Someone who is neutral.

It could be a bus driver,

It could be a parking lot attendant,

Or a clerk at a store.

You have them sitting in front of you now.

Someone who you do not know,

But is neutral to you.

I want you now to breathe in their pain,

Their difficulties.

Breathing in their black smoke,

And I want you to exhale out into them this beautiful,

Rich compassion and love into their being.

Breathing into them peace and serenity.

Breathing their obstacles,

Their confusion,

And exhaling out to them vitality and love.

Exhaling hope.

And now I want you to imagine sitting in front of you,

A person who you have difficulty with,

Who you have challenges with.

Placing them in front of you,

Sitting,

Seeing them as who they are.

And now I want you to breathe in their difficulty,

Their anger,

And I want you to exhale out.

Breathing in black smoke,

And the full moon in your torso,

The radiant light and radiant health that you possess transforms their negativity,

And you return it as love,

And return to them All that you wish for yourself,

Peace,

Good health,

Prosperity,

You're breathing in their pain,

And you're exhaling out,

Feeling yourself soften,

Feeling the white light within you continuing to relax and nourish your body.

You then send it to the person who is suffering,

Who you have difficulty with.

Breathing in their darkness,

And exhaling out the light.

I want you to imagine in front of you,

Sitting face to face with you is yourself,

And I want you to breathe in the pain and suffering that you've experienced,

And then in turn,

I want you to exhale out compassion and softness,

Exhaling out gentleness,

Understanding,

Breathing in the darkness of the pain of this person,

Yourself,

Breathing it in,

And exhaling out goodness and acceptance.

Gently,

But firmly,

Continuing to breathe in the darkness,

Breathing out the light.

There is a circle of energy,

There is a reciprocity,

There is no separation,

Breathing in darkness,

Breathing out the light,

Contributing to the world with the white light that you carry,

That you hold,

Regenerating yourself with this full moon in your torso,

This full moon is relaxing your body,

Relaxing and nourishing your mind,

So that you in turn can give to the world,

Giving back,

Being of service,

Simply through your kindness,

Through your open heart and love.
