This is perhaps one of the most profound descriptions of the human condition. Brilliant and worth revisiting time and again. It will help you to shift out of the incessant mind into the body and to communicate from a place of depth and soul. The human collective, Bassam points out, is caught in repeat cycles of self rejection. It is only by coming out of the mind into the body that we are able to reunite with our Soul. Bassam demonstrates that the sense-reality of the body, which the average human being is almost entirely disconnected from, is the remedy to our existential crisis: The body is the answer to the mind’s questioning, adding further: the joy we long for outside of ourselves is the inherent joy of our being.

Hi,

I'm Bassem.

Thank you for joining me.

Conscious communication,

Building deeper connections and exploring the art of mindful communication for stronger,

More meaningful relationships.

Greetings to you all.

Thank you for joining me again.

I hope that you're doing well and that you're in good spirit.

Let's begin to ground in to the present moment,

To center into the beingness of ourselves.

The joy that we long for outside is the joy of our being.

Sitting there,

Wherever you are,

In the absence of your thoughts,

There you find the joy of being.

And yet the human being spends most of our life looking outside for what is inside.

The problem is not in the looking.

It's that our looking is missing part of the picture.

Consequently,

We feel disconnected and worse,

Lost to ourselves.

If we could learn to see ourselves in our outward looking,

There would be no problem.

All existential crises,

All questions,

All problems,

Issues,

Just vanish.

And the simple act of having a sense of myself,

Looking out,

Simultaneously feeling in,

Looking out,

Feeling in.

In my looking out,

There is simultaneously the sense of my beingness,

So that my looking is colored by the feeling of myself.

The sensed reality of myself is in my looking,

Is in my listening,

Is in my speaking.

There is no disconnection.

It's for this reason that I say,

If there is one skill that can act as the foundation of your happiness,

It's this.

Develop your ability to sense your being in your daily activity.

As you are speaking,

Feel your being.

As you are listening,

Feel your being.

As you are moving,

Talking,

Feel your being.

Being able to look out and at the same time feel in.

Being able to order a cup of coffee while feeling the beingness of myself,

So that I am in my experience,

No longer excluded,

No longer in a perpetual state of self-rejection.

In my living,

I am nowhere to be seen.

I see everything except for me.

I am not in my living.

I am not in my being.

I am in my mind.

When I remove this self-rejection,

Actually not philosophically,

Not intellectually,

Right now I am in a state of self-acceptance,

Not as an idea because I am a good man,

Because I am directly connected with my being.

I accept what I feel as a by-product of the sense reality of my being.

Acceptance is a happening,

Not an idea.

And it's only when I can accept myself in this way that I can accept others.

Existing in this collective self-rejection,

We try to have relations with others.

I look at them,

But I do not see myself.

I listen to them without sensing myself,

Completely engrossed in my thinking.

And yet,

It is in the absence of my thinking that I am born to myself,

And I experience the joy of being myself.

We were born with the joy of our being intrinsic in our nature.

Born fearless,

We learn to be afraid.

Born trusting,

We learn to be doubtful.

Born playful,

We learn to be serious and austere.

Born loving,

We learn to be hateful.

Born knowing,

We learn to be uncertain and confused.

Have you ever seen a baby that does not know what it wants?

And then we spend thousands of dollars on therapists,

Healers,

Trying to recover what was already ours,

That we have now become distanced from.

The question is,

How do we become distant?

It's not as if we can go away from ourselves.

We become distant by becoming prejudiced to the mind.

And so we begin to register reality through the faculty of our thinking,

And cease to be able to meet reality and ourselves directly.

The mind becomes a middle man,

Middle woman between me and reality,

So that I am no longer capable of sensing my being,

Of existing without my thinking,

Which is random,

Habitual.

Thinking just appears and I subscribe.

It never occurs to me,

I don't have to subscribe to these thoughts.

I can be without them,

And in their absence,

My being is unveiled.

I am not an idea,

I am an experience to myself.

I know I am here because I am sensing me.

I can feel the aliveness in my hands,

In my legs,

In my body.

This being is alive right now,

And I am feeling it.

I connect and I teach myself to maintain this connection in everything that I do.

Walking,

I keep returning to the sense of myself.

Out of the mind,

Into the body.

My thoughts are tempting me,

I notice that I have gone,

I bring myself back.

From thinking to sensing.

Thinking,

Sensing.

Sensing,

Sensing.

Sensing.

The more I sense,

The deeper I journey.

The deeper I journey,

The more my consciousness expands.

The deeper I go,

The more profound I am.

We must prioritize our being once again.

Speak,

Sense.

Listen,

Sense.

Stop talking,

Look,

Feel,

Sense.

Never losing touch with the bubbling ecstasy in the being.

Never losing touch with the aliveness.

Then the world becomes secondary to your being,

And in your being now you can have relation with others.

The mind that was standing between you and others is taking a back seat,

And consequently you are allowed to receive them,

They are speaking,

And you are sensing.

The sense of you is in your listening,

So you are never not with you.

You take you everywhere with you.

The mind's urgency,

Tendency to want to cut in,

Takes a back seat,

Because that urgency is a product of a mind-made personality.

So we are shifting from a mind-made self to being-sensed self.

Until now,

Our mind-made self is ruling the roost,

Cutting in when people are speaking,

Speaking too fast,

Without pausing,

Not speaking at all,

I'm afraid.

That's the mind-made self.

When I sense my being,

I drop out of the mind-created self in the here and now.

If I need to speak,

I speak.

If I don't need to speak,

I don't need to speak.

In the sense of myself,

There is the joy of my being.

Everything that I'm doing in life is about that.

And now that I have found that,

My complex is no longer important.

All my strategies,

After all,

Are a tool to find joy,

To find happiness.

Now that I have found the joy in my being,

I no longer have a reason or use for those things.

Consequently,

I become real.

I become honest.

Joy now is motivating my being,

Not self-rejection.

We're conditioned to distance ourselves from our own inner impulses and to subscribe to conditioned ideas that belong to others.

I'm not saying they're bad ideas,

But they are not inwardly generated.

They are negatively geared.

I listen,

I live,

I join groups,

I start groups,

Motivated by self-rejection.

Not consciously.

It's just that that's how we are conditioned.

From early on,

We are talked out of our inner impulses in favor of learned good ideas.

And so we cease to be able to recognize our intuition.

Intuition,

Tuition from within.

In is the body,

Not the mind.

The body is the answer to the mind's question.

The mind says,

Who am I?

The body answers that question.

But we have been talked out of our connection with the body.

We no longer recognize or trust our bodily intelligence,

Which is called intuition.

It is no longer the sense reality of ourselves that is guiding our lives.

It is our dictates of the intellect,

Our thoughts.

I cannot look at the world without my thinking.

I cannot look at life without seeing its label.

Looking,

Sensing.

Talking,

Sensing,

Simultaneously.

Listening,

Sensing.

Allowing the joy of my beingness to be behind my speaking.

We are talked out of our inner impulses and are connected to good ideas.

And that's why there is urgency,

There is desperation,

There is frustration,

There is impatience.

You listen to some people speak sometimes and you are left wondering if they are going to ever take a breath.

A thousand statements without a pause.

No punctuations in their speech.

They are not present.

What does it mean,

Not present?

It simply means no sense of my being.

I am not feeling me as I am speaking.

I am not in my speech.

I am not in my listening.

But when I am in my speech,

I feel immediately the joy of my being and it begins to motivate me.

In other words,

It becomes what is behind my listening,

What is behind my speaking.

Joy,

Love.

And the other person senses that.

That's why they are willing to listen to you when it's time to speak.

And that's why they suddenly stop,

Quiet down when you are speaking.

Because your urgency,

Your desperation,

Your frustration,

Your impatience,

All of which are product of the mind-made self,

Have now been replaced by the joy of being.

All that urgency,

Frustration,

Desperation,

All of this is a product of not knowing where I am.

I can't feel me.

And if you want proof of this,

Have you ever been in an experience where you are in the midst of ecstasy in your being and you are so in the experience itself,

Not a thought is there.

Why?

Why has now the mind taken a back seat to the experience?

Because it's the joy that we are longing for.

Can you feel your hand?

Maybe there is tingling there.

Maybe you can feel some heat.

Can you feel the left foot?

Tingling,

Vibration.

People want first contact with aliens.

Make a first contact with yourself first before you go looking for aliens.

When you connect with yourself and you begin slowly,

Left hand,

Right hand,

Right foot,

Left foot,

Left hand,

You begin to go deeper,

Deeper,

Deeper.

You are finding yourself.

And in your finding,

There is the glory of God.

Perhaps you think you were born in these extraordinary times as an accident.

I have a question for you.

Why have you incarnated as a soul in this particular time when the earth is undergoing a major shift?

Or do you believe that it is purely coincidental?

If in feeling your being you still have questions,

Feel your right foot.

Switch across now to the left foot.

Feel your left foot.

It will tell you the secrets of the universe.

All questions are symptomatic of separation from self.

I am standing,

Talking to someone.

They are speaking.

And as I am listening and feeling my left hand,

My right hand,

And I begin to see them.

Not with my mind,

But with my being.

My judgment disappears and I see them as myself.

So how do I improve my communication?

When I am listening,

Sense.

When I am talking,

Sense.

A second practical advice.

Never say more than one statement at a time without taking a pause.

Use punctuation.

Comma.

Continue.

Full stop.

Breathe.

Go on.

The problem,

Of course,

Is that there is no presence.

No one is home.

Left hand.

Right hand.

Right foot.

Left foot.

I am not trying to feel something.

I am visiting my being.

And a third one is,

If you cannot feel your body as you are speaking,

If you cannot feel your voice vibrating in some part of you,

You have no business speaking.

Sound is the greatest healer.

And if you cannot feel the vibration of your sound in some parts of your body,

Then you are neither healing yourself nor the person that you are speaking to.

I am speaking and feeling.

Left hand.

Right hand.

Right foot.

Left foot.

In the long pauses between my sentences,

I have come out of the mind and into the body as a fact,

As a living reality.

Sensing.

Out of the mind and into the body.

Nothing extraordinary about what I am sharing with you.

This is a living practice.

Eckhart Tolle talks about the aliveness.

Same thing.

Waking up is not intellectual.

Waking up is actual.

Don't talk to me about awakening and you can't feel your left toe.

You've got the most intelligent people on the planet right now that can't even feel their right foot.

No one who senses their being does not become a compassionate human being.

Absence of being is behind their speech.

The maximum that the intellect can achieve is not even the beginning of love.

So what kind of attitudes should accompany my inner work?

What kind of attitude should I bring to my practice?

Beginner's attitude.

Don't let the mind steal you.

Allow the soul to grow.

So,

My friends,

We must be willing to crucify that which is taking the nourishment of the soul.

The soul is desperate for a drop of milk.

Crucify that which steals your ability to come alive.

This is what was meant by the crucifixion of Jesus.

Crucifixion of the ego so that he may rise from the dead three days later.

That the Christ consciousness may be born.

Or the Buddhahood.

Or al-ruh,

The spirit may rise.

Believers,

Non-believers,

These are not outside.

Your mind belongs to others.

Your being belongs to you.

In feeling my being,

It's like coming back home.

Thank you for joining me.

I wish you well.

Bye-bye for now.

Thank you Bassam for sharing this higher wisdom regarding communication in a clear and easy to understand way. Providing practical applications is most helpful. Listening to your talk, I actually focused my attention on various body parts like my hands and feet. A very new layer of listening. Listening was my job for many years. Not discounting the compassion that has accompanied my listening skills, this full body listening with the intention of allowing all of my being, in complete participation is very different. I’m encouraged to continue connecting with my body as I speak and listen. With time and consistency, I know that the inner awareness will become a natural outward expression. A “Living Practice”. Thanks again for your generosity.
