Usually, we never listen: a sound falling on the ear is not the meaning of listening. We are thinking simultaneously when someone is talking, then we are not listening because the mind can do only one thing at a time, never two things. Either we can listen or we can think. In this Guided Meditation, we will start with a Dharma talk that comes from Osho’s book - The Inner Journey (from which this meditation has been taken), to introduce and better understand the importance and the practice of Listening.‌ When done with pure awareness and presence, listening has wonderful effects: as the mind is incapable of doing two things at a time, as long as you are listening, for that much time thinking will stop. Indirectly, we’re silencing the mind. Here we will use the Music as an anchor for listening, but you can practice it anywhere (best in nature), by listening to the sounds around you: the wind, the birds…. any sound that is there with you.

Welcome to this little journey within the silent space within yourself.

This recording will guide you into a state of deep silence by using the process of listening.

Before starting,

I'd like to share a quote from Osho's book,

The Inner Journey,

That will help you to understand the importance of listening as a way to free the mind from thinking and overthinking.

The meditation we are going to experience here is mainly suggested for the morning practice but it can be done at any time of the day.

To start,

I invite you to sit down on a chair,

On a cushion or on the floor.

Your spine must be straight but without any tension.

Take the position that is most comfortable for you.

If you practice in the morning,

I just suggest you not to lie down as the body has to be awakened so that you can start your day grounded,

Active and present.

Now gently and slowly close your eyes so that there is no strain.

The muscles of the eyes are very much related to the brain so let them be absolutely relaxed.

Let your eyelids fall slowly,

Relaxedly.

Then relax all the muscles of the face and the head.

Make your face absolutely loose and relaxed.

Let the body also be relaxed.

The moment you let everything relax,

The breath will become relaxed and silent on its own.

Now let's begin this journey.

Now for today,

I'd like to invite you to do only one thing,

Listening to my words and then to the music.

Listen to it very silently,

Very very silently.

Give attention to only one thing.

Be just listening,

Doing nothing else.

Give yourself this intention.

I am listening.

I am listening totally.

I am not doing anything else,

Just listening,

Totally listening.

Meditation should be a very direct and simple practice.

Actually,

Whatever is significant in life is very simple and direct.

In life,

The more futile a thing is,

The more complicated and complex it is.

In life,

The higher a thing is,

The more simple and direct it is.

It is a very direct and simple process.

The only thing you have to do is to sit silently and listen silently to the word of sound all around.

Listening has a wonderful effect.

Usually we never listen.

When I'm speaking here,

If you think that you are listening,

Then you are making a great mistake.

A sound falling on the ear is not the meaning of listening.

You are thinking simultaneously when I'm talking.

Then you are not listening because the mind can do only one thing at a time,

Never two things.

Either you can listen or you can think.

As long as you are thinking,

For that much time,

Listening stops.

As long as you are listening,

For that much time,

Thinking will stop.

So when I say that listening is a wonderful process,

What I mean is if you just listen silently,

Then the thinking will stop on its own because it is one of the essential rules of the mind that is incapable of doing two things at a time,

Absolutely incapable.

So once again,

Go back to your intention and say to yourself,

I am listening.

I am listening.

I am not doing anything else,

Just listening,

Totally listening.

Listen very silently.

Give attention to only one thing.

I am stressing on listening because as you listen totally,

The continuous movement of thoughts within will become absolutely silent.

Because both of these things cannot happen simultaneously.

So put your total effort into listening.

And this is a positive effort.

If you try to throw out the thoughts,

Then the mistake I just told you will start happening.

This is a negative effort.

Thoughts cannot be thrown out by making an effort to get rid of them.

But if the energy of the mind,

Which usually goes into thinking,

Starts flowing into some other stream,

Then thoughts automatically become weak.

When a person becomes distracted,

His thoughts have no life on their own.

The more attention we give to thought,

The more alive it becomes.

The more we remove our attention,

The more dead it becomes.

If attention is totally removed,

Then thoughts become lifeless,

They die,

They disappear immediately.

That is why we should give all our attention to listening.

And you will be amazed to see how the mind will naturally enter into a deep state of silence.

Only one thing has to be done.

You have to simply relax your body.

Once again,

Go back to your intention and just listen silently to the music.

Go on listening and listening and listening.

And everything will become silent inside.

Be just listening,

Doing nothing else.

Listen and by and by,

Within you a humming silence will begin.

Listen,

Listen silently to the music for the next few minutes.

The mind is becoming silent.

Go on listening and listening.

The mind is becoming silent.

Go on listening and listening.

The mind is becoming silent.

The mind is becoming silent.

The mind is becoming silent.

The mind has become silent.

The mind has become absolutely silent.

A deep silence is present now inside.

Listen to it,

Just listen to it.

Listen and by and by,

The mind will become more and more silent.

The mind has become absolutely silent.

The mind has become absolutely silent.

The mind has become absolutely silent.

As we come to the end of this meditation,

Keeping your eyes closed,

Slowly bring your awareness back to your surroundings and to your body.

Feel the floor beneath you,

Feel your clothes against your body,

Gently move your fingers and toes,

Stretch your body,

Roll your shoulder back,

Take a deep breath in through the nose and a deep breath out through the mouth.

Exhale slowly,

Releasing any lingering tension.

Allow yourself to reawaken gently.

Sit for a few moments more,

Enjoying how relaxed you feel now.

Experience your body reawaken with new energy and your mind returning to its usual level of awareness.

Gently now open your eyes and slowly return to a standing position to continue with the rest of your day,

Feeling present,

Grounded and still.

Thank you for being here.

Namaste.

Very nice. It takes practice to stay focused on listening only!
