It has long been recognized that exposure to the beauties and elements of nature has improved one’s mental health. Furthermore, research studies have, for instance, proven that a long walk in the woods has reduced levels of anxiety and depression in humans. Furthermore, scientific evidence demonstrates that the imagery of a tree, for instance, can improve one’s mood, enhance one’s attention span, and reduce cortisol (the stress hormone). With this in mind, here is a brief break in your day to join with the energy of a tree and calm down.

Trees may be sentient beings,

Ancient reminders of the earth's awakening to life.

Reflect for a moment on trees.

Trees are self-sustaining as a system.

They reach out and grow to the light.

They communicate in their root systems quietly with other trees and warn them of dangers.

They have wise,

Quiet self-defense.

They do not complain.

They are all good energy,

And we can learn from them and gain great peace from them.

Research studies have proven that a walk in the forest is very healing of both anxiety and depression symptoms.

So,

Become the tree.

Allow yourself to sink in for a few moments and go inside.

Now recall an image from your past of a tree or tree-filled setting that you remember in a good,

Soothing way.

Settle in now to that setting and see it,

Feel it,

Sense it now.

And slow down your breathing.

Breathe in,

One,

Two,

Three,

Hold onto that breath for just a moment,

And then breathe out as I count slowly to the count of six,

One,

Two,

Three,

Exhaling,

Four,

Letting out all the air,

Wishing it out,

Five.

Wonderful,

And now slowly move your awareness into this tree.

Allow it to embrace you as you embrace the tree.

Feel its coolness or its warmth,

Just whatever your body needs right now.

Feel the energy and the essence of this tree.

Breathe in and breathe out.

There's strength here.

The tree draws its energy and nutrients from the earth.

The tree reaches out now towards the energy-granting sun.

The tree is flexible.

It bends with the wind and the elements.

Imagine yourself bending ever so gently,

Stretching yourself ever so gently,

Slowly,

Quietly.

The tree slows down in times of stress,

Sinking in,

Then grounding itself.

It communicates quietly with help from nature.

It rests easy,

And so,

Too,

It grants that sense of calm to those who absorb themselves into the essence of the tree,

So,

Too,

You go inwards.

Become one with this tree,

Moving your own energy into the tree,

And feel its power.

Feel the life-giving calmness and strength,

Moving closer,

Moving inwards,

Joining with the tree,

Maybe just having a conversation with this tree.

Feel its steady embrace.

Join with the tree.

Become the tree.

Be the tree.

Take from it the qualities that you know you need right now.

Calm,

Rest,

Strength.

Calm,

Rest,

Strength,

Peace.

Calm,

Rest,

Peace.

Stay here for a moment.

Then,

Very slowly,

When you feel ready,

Begin to emerge,

And from here,

Drift off to a restful sleep,

Or alternatively,

If it needs be,

You can awaken and open new energy coming with you from this space and time with this tree.

Counting upwards now from the number 5,

4,

3,

2,

1.

And again,

Back in this space and time,

Feeling the true sense of the calm that you bring with you from being the tree.
