Mindful Leadership: Purposeful Pauses To Lead & Live With Excellence

With Janice Marturano

Today's world asks us to juggle high pressure situations at work, complex family needs and community responsibilities. It can feel overwhelming and we often learn to cope by going on autopilot. We go through the motions but rarely bring our best selves to anything. This living on autopilot affects our ability to be creative, to make the best decisions, to communicate well, to connect deeply with family, and even to get a good night's sleep. In this course, you will learn simple, universal trainings that I call Purposeful Pauses. These mini-trainings of your mind will teach you to interrupt the autopilot and tap into your innate ability to be present and to listen to your own wisdom. And, best of all, Purposeful Pauses do not add anything to your already too long 'to-do' list. Whether you lead a company, a team, a classroom or a family, you can learn to lead, and live, with excellence. I hope you will join me and explore for yourself the power of taking a Purposeful Pause.

Lesson 1

What Exactly Is A Purposeful Pause?

Starting Your Day: Today you will explore the definition of a Purposeful Pause and why it is both a simple mini-training for your mind and an anchor to the present moment. The first Purposeful Pause you will be invited to try will help you learn to 'start your day' rather than letting the day start you. You may be surprised by how this small practice can set up your entire day.

Lesson 2

Getting From Here To There

Today you will learn how to use commuting time as a way to train your mind and open to your own wisdom. You are going to commute to and from work anyway, why not use that time to strengthen your ability to be focused and have greater clarity?

Lesson 3

What Lunch? Did I Eat Today?

Is that a common question for you? Are you sometimes unsure of what you had for lunch, or whether you had any lunch? Today you will learn about the need for your mind and body to take a midday Purposeful Pause. And you will hear about a myth...the myth of multitasking and how it reduces your ability to live your best life...at work and at home.

Lesson 4

The Connections Needed To Really Communicate

How often do you feel that you are not being heard? Or, have you been told that you don't hear others? Effective communication skills is a critical component of leading and living with excellence. Today you will explore how Purposeful Pauses can help you learn to strengthen the connections needed to really communicate.

Lesson 5

Regaining Your 20/20 Vision

It can be so easy to see things clearly when we are looking at them the next day. What does it take to have some of that clarity 'in the moment'. Today you will learn what is happening in your brain in moments of high stress. And you will learn ways of working with that reactivity that can help you learn to respond rather than react.

Lesson 6

The Power Of Gratitude

One of the most powerful allies you have in your journey to lead and live with excellence is your ability to cultivate gratitude. Today you will learn what gratitude really is (hint: it is not the same as being thankful for something given to you), you will practice with a guided gratitude meditation, and you will learn to bring a simple gratitude Purposeful Pause practice into your life.

Lesson 7

Replacing The Inner Critic With A Good Friend

We have the capacity to say critical things to ourselves that we would never consider saying to anyone else. And, too often we begin to believe things that have little basis in fact. What if a reflective Purposeful Pause could begin the work of really looking at the voice of the inner critic, and challenging its veracity? What would be different if the inner critic begins to fade?

Lesson 8

Who Needs Sleep?

The medical profession tells us there is an epidemic of sleep-deprived professionals. Even when we are tired, we sometimes can't sleep through the night. And inadequate sleep affects every system in your body. So, the answer to the question, 'who needs sleep?' is you! In today's session, you will look at simple steps, including a Purposeful Pause, that can help you get to sleep, and stay asleep.

Lesson 9

Are You Leading And Living With Excellence?

What keeps you from living your best life, or following your passion? Is it what people or assessments have told you are your limitations, or strengths? Yes, sometimes your strengths can also limit you. For example, have you taken on assignments or accepted promotions you didn't really want because someone told you 'you will be great at this'? Today's exploration may give you the beginnings of your answers to these questions as you learn to use a Purposeful Pause reflection to explore your true potential.

Lesson 10

What Now? Going Forward

Today you will have a chance to look back at the many ways you can bring simple practices into all aspects of your life...at work and at home. During this course, you have seen how Purposeful Pauses, and short mindfulness practices, can become a way of being with your life that allows you to step off of autopilot and lead and live with excellence. It is now up to you to customize these practices to fit with your life so you can more often influence 'for better'!
